WHY FARMERS MATTER
It’s just one of the many ways she
shares the farming lifestyle with other
people. She believes in supporting the
local agriculture industry by providing
information to the public and making
the connection between what we eat
each day and where it originates. She’s
also focused on taking good care of
animals by providing them with a nutritious
diet and healthy living conditions.
A major focus of her message is on
buying local, an effort that she’s immersed
herself in during the last year.
In addition to running the farm with
her husband, Brandon Moore, she
operates The Kitchen at Moore Family
Farms, a shop that sells cheese made
from milk from her dairy cows and
other locally produced foods and handmade
crafts in downtown Maquoketa.
The store, at 204 S. Main St., started
out in winter of 2017 as a holiday shop
that Moore expected to keep open seasonally.
She and Brandon were looking
for a way to create a value-added,
sustainable market for their milk. While
they dream of opening a creamery —
an expensive undertaking — for the
time being they found one in Wisconsin
that processes their milk into cheddar
cheese and cheese curds.
A strong business that first season —
they sold out of their first 700 pounds
of cheese before Christmas — and
the availability of the space prompted
her to decide to keep the shop open
year-round and expand its offerings
to include hand-dipped ice cream and
daily lunch specials. Everything sold in
the store — from peanut butter, honey,
“We’re a rural
county, so it’s
important to us
that we’re tipping
our hat to the rural
community.”
