His father had served in the Confederate Army. Moffett graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1890. Moffett served in Guam on board the USS Charleston and later in the Battle of Manila, towards the end of the Spanish- American War. Moffett eventually became captain of the USS Chester and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle of Veracruz. During World War I, Moffett was commander of the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Moffett, along with his wife Jeannette and five children, lived in a house on Sheridan Road near the entrance to Lake Forest College. Each day, as Moffett drove north from Lake Forest to Great Lakes he crossed a bridge in Lake Bluff over a ravine. He dispatched a crew of naval engineers to repair the bridge in Lake Bluff, and the road was renamed Moffett Road in his honor. Moffett was an early proponent of the navy using aircraft; at Great Moffett Road is named after William Moffett, former Lake Forest resident. Moffett helped introduce the use of aircraft carriers, and he came to be known as the “Air Admiral.” In addition to airplanes, Moffett also advocated the use of dirigibles. Under Moffett’s leadership the USS Akron was constructed in 1929. The Akron was enormous at nearly 800 feet long and 150 feet high. The Akron was designed to be a flying aircraft carrier. Five fighter biplanes could be launched from beneath Akron while it was in flight. The Akron also was equipped with a “spy basket.” The Akron could fly above the clouds with a manned basket hung on a tether well below, serving as spotter. But the basket proved to be unstable and was often tossed around by air currents. In April 1933 the USS Akron, with Admiral Moffett aboard, flew a mission along the coast of New England. The ship was caught in a violent windstorm and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after midnight. Seventy three of the 76 men on board lost their life, including Admiral Moffett. By comparison, 36 were killed in the more famous Hindenburg disaster. Admiral William Moffett and his wife Jeannette are buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Moffett’s namesakes include: Mount Moffett in Alaska, the Navy destroyer USS Moffett and the Moffett Air Field in California. David Forlow has been a Lake Bluff resident for more than 20 years.
