THE NORTHBROOK TOWER
Two school-shooting
threats found at Glenbrook
North
A second threatening
message was reported
to officials at Glenbrook
North High School the
morning of Thursday, Oct.
4, according to an email
sent out from GBN principal
Dr. John Finan.
At approximately 9:30
a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4,
students reported seeing
the statement “Stay out
of school 10 4” carved
into the seat of a desk in a
classroom, according to the
email. Below the statement,
an image of a handgun was
etched into the desk.
GBN administration immediately
reported the incident
to the Northbrook
Police Department.
“We are continuing our
investigation of this message
and the message reported
yesterday,” Finan
says in the email.
The threat comes just
one day after a Glenbrook
North student reportedly
found a school-shooting
threat written on the top of
a classroom desk at approximately
2 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 3.
According to the email,
the threat yesterday read
“Shooting 10 03.”
Per the Oct. 4 email, all
school events for Oct. 4
will continue as scheduled
with increased security
presence.
“We will continue to
screen students and all
visitors as they enter the
school and will continue
to communicate with you
as more is known,” Finan
says. “Northbrook Police
will have a continued presence
on and around campus
throughout the afternoon
and evening.”
THE GLENVIEW LANTERN
Glenview psychologist
arrested on federal health
care fraud charges pleads
not guilty
A Glenview psychologist
facing federal fraud charges
for allegedly submitting
false claims to Medicare
and private insurers pleaded
not guilty to the charges
Tuesday, Oct. 2, according
to federal authorities.
Pamela Antell, 66, of
Deerfield, was arrested
the morning of Oct. 2 and
charged with five counts of
health care fraud and three
counts of aggravated identity
theft, according to U.S.
Attorney for the Northern
District of Illinois John
Lausch and Jeffrey Sallet,
special agent in charge of
the FBI’s Chicago office.
Authorities allege Antell
submitted fraudulent
claims between 2011 and
January 2018 to Medicare
and private insurers for
mental health services that
were not rendered. The
indictment alleges Antell,
who also used the name
Pamela Gruenhut, was not
even in Illinois on several
dates on which she claimed
to have provided services
to patients.
She also used some of
her patients’ names and
birthdates to create false
forms to submit claims for
services never rendered,
Lausch and Sallet say in a
news release.
After pleading not guilty
to the charges Oct. 2, Antell
was released on her own
recognizance, authorities
said. A status hearing for
her case is scheduled for
10:30 a.m. Oct. 24 at the
U.S. District Court for the
Northern District of Illinois
in Chicago.
THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK
D112 superintendent
proposes nine-school model
under $83M long-range
plan
North Shore District 112
Superintendent Michael
Lubelfeld updated the
school board on his $83-
million long-range facilities
plan Oct. 2, saying it’s
probably the best-laid plan
its ever seen.
His most-recent proposal
calls for major renovations
at the district’s two middle
schools and Red Oak Elementary
School within
a four-year period, along
with ongoing repairs at
the remaining K-5 schools
costing $3 million per year.
Under the plan, Red Oak
would reopen and merge
with Sherwood Elementary
School in the fall of 2020,
while Northwood Junior
High School would reopen
in December 2020 and
Edgewood Middle School
in the fall of 2021.
The renovations would
cost between $15 million
and $20 million at Red
Oak, at least $30 million at
Northwood and up to $40
million at Edgewood.
Additionally, the Green
Bay Early Childhood Center,
which Lubelfeld and
his committee had previously
planned to shut
down, would remain open
and eventually relocate
to the Red Oak property,
which has nearly 19 acres
of land, he said.
Lubelfeld noted the updated
plan is the result of
monthslong work with a
committee of administrators,
teachers, district architects
and community
members since his start as
superintendent in July.
