This past week a
new history center
opened in Lake Forest
and Lake Bluff.
And with the opening
of the new History Center
of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff
comes a name change and
a variety of stories waiting
to be told.
I was fortunate enough to
receive a sneak peek of the
new space in Lake Forest
before the grand opening.
THE WINNETKA CURRENT
Trustees pass first step of
amended One Winnetka
proposal
An unmistakable sense
of déjà vu gripped the Winnetka
Village Hall Tuesday
night, Oct. 2.
The Winnetka Village
Council approved a One
Winnetka development
proposal in January 2017,
but the developer has since
brought forth a revised proposal,
which was presented
to the Village Council at
its Tuesday, Oct. 2 regular
meeting.
During a nearly fourhour
meeting Tuesday —
almost entirely devoted to
discussion of the revised
One Winnetka proposal
— the Winnetka Village
Council voted to approve
the introduction of documents
reflecting changes
to the proposal, which will
be up for final approval at a
later date.
By voice votes, all coming
in 3-2, the Village
Council approved the introduction
of ordinances. The
proposal will be up for final
approval during the next
regularly scheduled council
meeting Tuesday, Oct. 16.
THE GLENCOE ANCHOR
$26.9M tentative levy gets
and boy was I impressed.
One thing I loved about
the new building, is with
the new space, the history
of the old building and
what it used to be is still
alive. You can still tell that
it used to be a church. I was
told they made it a point to
keep the steeple.
The first room that I went
into was the gallery room,
and I loved seeing paintings
or drawings or photos from
artists or events that make
up our rich history.
One of the drawings that
impressed me was a drawing
of a courtroom trial. I
loved the attention to detail
and seeing a trial conveyed
in a different way than a
photo or video. Also, knowing
that you could not have
cameras in the courtroom
during that time, and how
fast he or she had to draw it
was incredible and impressive
to think about.
But, above all, the thing
I loved the most about the
new space was the new
interactive screens that hold
endless history information
about Lake Forest and Lake
Bluff.
These screens are a great
tool for families to use and
make it a fun learning environment
for children.
There are so many things
to learn in that space it will
surprise you.
One of my favorite
things in that room was a
hand-written letter from
F. Scott Fitzgerald, who
wrote to a Lake Forest
woman he loved. It was this
woman who the character
named Daisy in “The Great
Gatsby” was made after.
As I saw this and was
able to remember who F.
Scott Fitzgerald was, and
his impact on the world,
the green light
The Glencoe School District
35 Board adopted its
2018 tentative tax levy at
$26.9 million at its Thursday,
Oct. 4 meeting. This
represents an increase of
4.57 percent over the 2017
tax extension.
The 4.57 percent proposed
increase is recommended
in light of a tax-cap
limitation of 2.1 percent
CPI above the 2017 tax
extension. The proposed
tax-levy increase incorporates
the possibility of $25
million of new growth for
the district. New growth for
2017 was $10.5 million, in
comparison to $5.3 million
in 2016.
I realized just how amazing
history is and all of the
things we don’t know about
that make our community
unique.
As I got to see everything
the new history center
has to offer and got to
hear some unique stories
about Lake Forest and
Lake Bluff, I realized how
important history is.
How much do you know
about the town your family
lives in, the town that you
grew up in, the town you
own a home in?
There is so much to learn
and so many incredible
stories that everyone can
relate to.
I encourage everyone to
check out the new space
and be open-minded to
learning about things that
contributed to your town’s
success.
