Sore Feet and Kid Athletes
Pushing ourselves to be our best during
practice and our chosen sporting event makes
for some very sore feet. Sever’s disease is a
common heel injury that occurs in kids as a
result of physical activity.
The heels of their feet will most likely
become painful and they will experience pain,
however Sever’s disease is a temporary ailment
with no long-term effects. Papanui Foot Clinic
to the rescue.
The Papanui Foot Clinic are experts in
assisting your child with the resources for a
quick and long-term recovery.
Sever’s disease, known as calcaneal
apophysitis, is a painful bone disorder which
is the result of inflammation or the swelling of
the growth plate in a child’s heel. It is the most
common cause of heel pain in growing children,
especially those who are physically active.
Such stress commonly results from physical
activities, specifically sports that involve
running and jumping. Especially those that
take place on hard surfaces, such as track,
basketball, soccer, and gymnastics.
Poor-fitting shoes can contribute to the
condition by not providing enough support or
padding for the feet or by rubbing against the
back of the heel.
It usually occurs during the growth spurt of
adolescence, any time between the ages of 8
and 13 for both boys and girls.
The most obvious sign of Sever’s disease
is pain or tenderness in one or both heels,
usually at the back. The pain also might
extend to the sides and bottom of the heel,
ending near the arch of the foot.
