Urgent solution
sought to
fix step damage
• By Matt Salmons
STEPS DOWN to Te Ana
Marina from Simeon Quay in
Lyttelton have been closed due to
concerns for public safety.
While no date had been set for
the stairs to reopen, city council
manager planning and delivery
transport Lynette Ellis said work
“is expected to be undertaken
without delay.”
“Council staff are working
with contractors to develop a
solution that will allow the steps
to be re-opened.
“The proposed solution and
programme are still being
developed and specific dates
have not been set.”
She said contractors working
on a nearby sewer hit and
broke a 30cm water main in
July.
“Before they could fix the
break, water overwhelmed the
steps causing some damage to
the bank,” she said.
The water undermined the
stairs.
A recent assessment of the
steps identified a potential risk
to the public and the city council
closed them as a precautionary
measure.
SUMNER’S NEWEST principal
is finding her feet this week after
moving from Outback Australia.
Charlotte Morgan started her
new role as principal at Our
Lady Star of the Sea School on
Monday.
Mrs Morgan would also have
a teaching role at the school.
“I’m experienced in all levels
of primary schooling, so I’ll fit
in wherever needs be.
“I’m just really excited to get
to know the students and
families.”
She said her first priority
would be finding her feet in
the school and fitting into the
“absolutely amazing” teaching
team, rather than bringing in
any changes.
“I’m not the sort of person
who goes in and re-invents the
wheel.”
She said she, her husband
Dion Parson and her children
Tāmati, 11, and Amīria, 6, had
been welcomed at Our Lady Star
of the Sea with a special mass
and pōwhiri when they first arrived
before the holidays.
Both children now attended
the school.
In the last week of term 3, Mrs
Morgan spent time with former
acting principal Mark Gregory
for a handover.
Principals from other Catholic
schools and parents had
contacted her to make her feel
welcome, she said.
“I feel very supported . . . very
lucky and blessed.”
Originally from Napier, Mrs
Morgan and her family had
moved back to New Zealand last
month.
She had spent the last six years
working in Western Australia,
including at a school in an
indigenous community in the
remote Kimberly region and at a
new Catholic school in Perth.
Sumner’s convenience, beachfront
location and the ability to
take a quick walk to get a coffee
or go to the library had made for
a “fabulous” transition.
“When you’ve [lived in the
Outback] you learn to appreciate
the little things in life.”
Sumner’s community spirit
Mrs Morgan’s own primary
school principal, Sister Peter
Channel, had once held the
post at Our Lady Star of the
Sea.
“I was quite surprised to see
that. She was a great principal,
she knew everybody, knew all
the families.”
