On Friday afternoon, the 72-yearold, who did not wish to speak to The Star, was driving towards Akaroa from Christchurch when the car left the road on a bend between the Hilltop Tavern and Barrys Bay on State Highway 75. The Volvo XC60 rolled several times, before stopping on a plateau. Akaroa Senior Constable Tim Johnson said there was no indication that speed or erratic driving was involved in the incident. He said the woman’s car had crashed through 40m of bush before reaching open ground. “It was lucky there was that plateau, otherwise, she would have kept going until she reached the bottom . . . another 100m.” When he arrived at the scene a member of the public was sitting with the woman. “She was shaken and cold. But otherwise, no injuries.” She was taken to Christchurch Hospital for observation. Arrest in gang killing investigation POLICE HAVE made a breakthrough into the shooting of King Cobras gang member, Luke Riddell. Mr Riddell, 28, was killed near Charing Cross, between Burnham and Darfield, on Saturday afternoon. A 35-year-old man appeared in court yesterday, charged with a number of firearms-related offences. The charges include unlawful possession of a sawn-off shotgun and shotgun cartridges and another charge of unlawful Luke Riddell possession of a shotgun. The charges come after a scene examination at a Darfield address on Telegraph Rd. Armed police raided an address in Gilberthorpes Rd, Hei Hei on Tuesday night. A scene examination took place at the address yesterday, in relation to the investigation. Detective Inspector Corrie Parnell confirmed yesterday the arrest was in relation to the homicide. The man was remanded in custody and will reappear on October 25. A scene examination at Grange Rd, Charing Cross, where the homicide took place, is HOMICIDE UPDATE: A scene investigation has taken place at a Gilberthorpes Rd property in Hei Hei, in relation to the killing of King Cobras gang member Luke Riddell. The murder took place on Grange Rd, near Charing Cross (below) on Saturday. now complete. Police previously said initial inquiries suggested an altercation took place between two men. They confirmed that a firearm was involved in the incident. It is believed that Mr Riddell was shot dead in front of his fiancé. There was heavy court security in place for the appearance of the man yesterday. Five police officers were in court, some with tasers, and two court security officers were present. Inquiries by The Star have revealed one member of the advisory group lives 3km from the proposed 170ha quarry site, bordering Curraghs, Dawsons, Jones and Maddisons Rds. Curraghs Rd resident Simon Moore, who lives 600m from the quarry site, slammed the inclusion of the member. “What a farce. How can that person be affected at all?” Mr Moore said. Ian Walsh, lives 3km southeast of the proposed quarry site and is one of the seven members in the advisory group. He refused to talk to The Star. Fulton Hogan said immediate neighbours are part of the advisory group. But Fulton Hogan refused to disclose who and what organisations are on the advisory group or comment on whether they regarded Mr Walsh as an immediate neighbour. The Star is aware the Weedons Residents’ Association is part of the group. The company did not invite all immediate neighbours to be part of the group. Mr Moore said his neighbours who are immediate neighbours have not heard of the advisory group. Said Fulton Hogan South Island manager Craig Stewart: “The group’s composition came about from neighbours and local residents’ inquiries and conversations with Fulton Hogan about our proposed quarry.” Mr Stewart said discussion with the advisory group is part of the company’s “on-going process of engagement and development” of the resource consent application. Mr Moore said it was concerning that the advisory group’s consultation could be used in preparing the company’s resource consent application. “If somebody is 3km away, who can’t even see it or hear the damn thing, how on earth can they have any constructive input into it at all?” he said. “It’s so farcical, that it’s unbelievable.” Mr Moore challenged more members of the advisory group FARCE: Curraghs Rd resident Simon Moore has slammed the community advisory group. Association secretary Gary Doyle said the meetings did not provide new detail about the quarry. The Templeton Residents’ Association refused to be part of the group, saying Fulton Hogan should speak to all residents, not a select group. Fulton Hogan expect to submit their resource consent application next month. in brief New way to deal with midge problem A new way of controlling the midge population at the Bromley oxidation ponds by mechanically dragging chains across the pond floor where the midge lay their larvae will be trialled over the coming months. The chains will be dragged by a boat at a steady walking pace every 10 days for five hours. The method been used at the Mangere oxidation ponds in south Auckland, which has also historically been plagued by midge problems. History of Halswell on show The history of Halswell dating back to 1850 will be on show this weekend. More than 1000 photos of the area have been complied together by former Halswell Quarry Park ranger John Moore. The majority of the collection was passed down from late photographer Lyal Browne and late historian Doug Ridder.
