arrayed against them at one time one-third of<br />
the entire German Army, two-thirds of the<br />
Austrian Army, the entire Hungarian Army,<br />
and two-thirds of the Turkish Army. They<br />
lost during the war 2,500,000 men upon the<br />
field of battle and between 3,000,000 and 3,500,-<br />
000 wounded. They had prisoners taken to the<br />
number of 2,000,000, 1,000,000 of whom died in<br />
prison. They themselves captured some 400,-<br />
000 German prisoners, 1,000,000 Austrians,<br />
and 300,000 Hungarians. Indeed, as the Premier<br />
of England said, at one time they sacrificed<br />
themselves in order to save the Allies.<br />
No nation suffered more or sacrificed more<br />
in the Great War during those years than the<br />
Russian people, and the fighting which they<br />
did was never excelled on any front in the<br />
world struggle or elsewhere. As has been recounted<br />
before, being without arms, in a large<br />
measure deprived of the means of carrying on<br />
the conflict which they should have had, they<br />
stood beside their fighting comrades, seized<br />
weapons from the falling men, and continued<br />
the battle.<br />
Indeed, it is said that at times they<br />
fought the opposing forces with their bare fists.<br />
Those are matters which ought to throw some<br />
light upon what we may expect of the Russian<br />
