make no concealment of the fact that I have<br />
sympathized from the beginning with the revolutionary<br />
movement in Russia. I expressed<br />
that opinion early in 1917, and I entertain the<br />
same feeling now.<br />
No people, with whose history I am familiar,<br />
had been scourged and tortured as the Russian<br />
people. They had suffered much and they suffered<br />
long at the hands of their corrupt and<br />
merciless masters. The unrelenting and sanguinary<br />
rule of the Romanoffs has no parallel<br />
in all the annals of crime. If ever a people had<br />
ample justification for overthrowing their government<br />
and seeking surcease of sorrow in a<br />
new life, these people were more than justified.<br />
The Great War, destroying, as it did, the rooted<br />
institutions of centuries also broke some fetters.<br />
In Russia, at least, they heard and believed<br />
that this war was being fought in the<br />
interest of the people, of democratic government.<br />
With this gospel of a new life ringing<br />
in their ears, the tragic year of 1917 was ushered<br />
in. It found the whole social and economic<br />
fabric of Russia in collapse ; a court mildewed<br />
with the stupid superstitions and loathsome<br />
lechery of Rasputin; venal public ministers<br />
bartering their influence in the highest market<br />
millions cold and hungry in the streets with
