SECOND: The Coastal Spirit under-19 boys team were
runners-up at the under-19 tournament at Cuthberts Green over
Labour weekend.
Second place for
Coastal Spirit
• By Jacob Page
THE COASTAL Spirit under-19
boys football team came up one
game short of winning their
own age-group tournament last
Monday at Cuthberts Green.
The annual men’s and women’s
Labour Weekend tournament
attracted teams from around
Canterbury and as far afield as
Wellington and Dunedin.
However, it was Halswell
United White who prevailed
in the final with a 3-0 win over
Coastal Spirit.
Cashmere Technical won the
women’s tournament by beating
Wellington United 4-1 on
penalties.
Event co-ordinator and Coastal
Spirit co-coach Gary Bennett
said the 14 teams that took part
all enjoyed the opportunity for
some spring football.
“We had players who were
after different things from the
tournament,” he said.
“We had players who were
going to carry on and play games
for the (Canterbury) Junior
Dragons while others were
having their last kick around
for the season and moving on to
summer sports,” he said.
“It was great to have some
teams from outside the region
being part of the event and for
(Coastal Spirit) to make the boys’
final was something that was
really pleasing.”
Bennett said players and
coaches found the tournament
valuable as they look to build
squad depth for the future
across both men’s and women’s
teams within their respective
clubs.
COACHES: The Coastal Spirit team was coached by Gary
Bennett (left), Ekow Quainoo and Warren Dunick.
