When my husband called me “skinny-fat”, I was shocked.
When he went on to say, “Kate’s the most unfit person I
know,” I was… taken aback (putting it mildly).
This rude awakening didn’t have an immediate effect (bar the
indignant retorts and steely glares), but the cogs started turning.
Sure, I know a day spent pretty much stationary, sat at a desk
working tirelessly at the computer screen, is in no way a healthy
existence. My lunchtime walks had become a distant memory.
Weekends were always slightly more active, spurred on by the
existence of two young children. However, with carrying the fiveyear-old
the only heavy lifting I was doing, fitness certainly wasn’t a
fixture of my daily routine.
I tried out a kickboxing class. I felt uncoordinated. I didn’t go
back.
Eventually, I rustled up the courage to try 9Round. And, I hate
to say it, truly I do, but adding a workout to the day has had a
huge impact on my life. I have resisted the urge to become ‘that
person’ on social media, but when those endorphins get going,
you do feel invincible.
The naysayers don’t believe I will keep it up; that this fitness fad
will burn out. Well, I’ve been going three times a week for two
months so far... how’s that for skinny-fat?
Wendy Megget was led to a study of health
and happiness by chronic illness. Now she writes
to help people connect – with themselves, others
Wendy has also published a book about bullying.
She shows us how to create a garden to support
Gillian Vine missed a train in Oamaru
when she was 15, chiefly because she was nosy
and wanted to look around the town. She has
been poking around ever since in New Zealand
prize-winning journalist/photographer, based in
Dunedin, she specialises in gardening, travel and
general features. Having recently made her first
visit to Vietnam, she fell in love and can’t wait to
stretched to the limit at a local fitness studio
venturing south, with her family and partner, to
take on the ski fields each winter.
FIGHTING fit
We’re leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles.
We’re time-poor. We’re tired. We know we need to
move our bodies to be fighting fit for whatever life
throws our way, but among the excuses is the one
about not knowing where to start.
Words Kate Preece
Stepping into a gym for the first time can be daunting enough, but knowing
which one is going to offer the answer to your fitness prayers is a whole
new kettleball.
To test out today’s options, we gave a few of the many fitness regimes
available in Christchurch a whirl to provide an insight into what goes on
behind those big scary doors. We also spoke to Gemma McCaw, co-owner
of Performance Wellbeing, to get an idea of what the gym jargon means, and
how best to get started.
“To achieve any goal, you must attach meaning to it. It should inspire you
and energise you to achieve it,” explains Gemma. This means looking past
some magic number you wish the scales to display and instead focusing on
why you’re looking to change – i.e. to live a happier life. “This moves us from
having to, to wanting to, and there is a big shift in mindset.”
Next comes the how. Before you head to your nearest gym, says Gemma,
assess your goals – for tone, weights are good (as in high-intensity interval
training or weight training); but if you want to boost your cardio capacity,
cycling, swimming or running could be the answer you’re seeking.
“Always consult a professional when stepping into a gym and get a full
assessment and talk through your goals with them. It is important that past or
current injuries are taken into account and you are able to safely manage your
training load while being overseen by a professional. Safety is paramount when
trying anything new, so getting shown the correct techniques is essential to
maximising your efficiency and avoiding unnecessary injuries.
“Too often we are looking for a quick fix, but with fitness it is a long-term
approach and consistency really is the key to achieving any goals.”

HIIT
High-intensity interval training
(HIIT) covers workouts that have
short periods of intense exercise,
alternating with recovery periods. The
Performance Wellness team explained
why there’s so much hype around it!
The key benefits of HIIT:
• Helps lose fat. High-intensity intervals
can produce similar fat loss to traditional
endurance exercise, even with a much
smaller time commitment. They can also
reduce unhealthy visceral fat.
• Boosts your metabolism. Due to
the intensity, HIIT can elevate your
metabolism for hours after exercise. This
results in extra calories being burned
even after you’ve finished exercising.
• Increases muscle mass. This is more
likely to occur in individuals who were
less active to begin with, however, it
doesn’t increase muscle mass as much as
weight training does.
• Improves oxygen consumption.
Oxygen consumption refers to your
muscle’s ability to use oxygen, and
endurance training is typically used to
improve your oxygen consumption.
Traditionally, this consists of long
sessions of continuous running or cycling
at a steady rate. However, it appears
that HIIT can produce the same benefits
in a shorter amount of time.
• Reduces heart rate and blood
pressure. Research shows that HIIT can
reduce heart rate and blood pressure in
overweight and obese individuals.
9Round Christchurch City
Specialised gym, fitness centre and health club. A kickboxingthemed
30-minute fitness programme where every three minutes,
after a 30-second ‘active rest period’, you move to a new station.
The circuit is never the same.
KATE
Prior fitness level: Slim to non-existent
Goal: To get moving!
Commitment: Two months, three times a week.
Results: Noticeable effects on tone, strength and mood.
The most appealing aspects of 9Round, for me, were its kickboxing
elements and non-existent class times – the latter key to fitting any
form of exercise into the working-mum lifestyle.
‘Mountain climbers’ and ‘reverse flies’ were part of one very
foreign language, and there was no way I could flip a tractor
tyre. Yet, with a trainer always there to talk you through the two
exercises at each of the nine stations, you can’t go wrong. And if
you do, they’ll soon set you straight.
At a busy after-work session, there may be a few people waiting
to get started, but my morning sessions were quiet, and quick – the
only thing holding me up being conversations with the trainers. With
one ‘freestyle’ round with the trainer to run through boxing drills,
there’s no way to not work up a sweat. Each week, one station
will remain the same, purely so that you have the chance to better
yourself next time.
Friends of mine thought this would be a phase, but the everchanging
9Round and its trainers are motivating and empowering.
I’ve been getting up early (unheard of), feel better physically and
mentally – and I can now flip that tractor tyre, no sweat.

F45 Riccarton
High-intensity circuit training studio.
Each of the classes on offer combines
functional training with high-intensity
interval training.
CHARLOTTE
Prior fitness level: Reasonably fit and
active.
Goal: To find a group fitness class that is
fun and enjoyable, plus makes me go and
want to work hard! I also enjoy variety
and get bored easily.
Commitment: 10 months, twice a week.
Results: Adding F45 to my fitness regime
has kept my exercise interesting and I
haven’t plateaued.
I first started F45 as friends from Brisbane
were raving about it. They were obsessed
with this fast-paced fitness studio,
describing it as the ultimate challenge.
Well, that was almost a year ago, and yes,
I have joined the cult.
I’ve kept it up because it’s fun. You see
results and know you have a structured
class with exercises that have been put
together by experts for the best results. I
need something I can put my confidence
in as my time is precious.
I stick to cardio F45 (versus weights
days), and believe this has led to an
increase in my ability – plus I feel
energised. It is for anyone, with choices to
suit your fitness level. As with any highimpact
exercise, be careful with injuries.
F45 remains hugely popular. You do
need to book the early morning classes,
but the busier the classes are, the more
hype there is – and the more you give!
SPECIALIST TRAINING
If you have a particular love for any form of exercise, there’s no reason
you can’t make this your starting point.
1 More Round
Boxing fitness centre. With a range of boxing and non-boxing classes,
it’s described as place to discover your fighting spirit.
JANINE
Prior fitness level: Above average, mainly on a cardio level due to
running and sports.
Goal: Get strong, be strong, and feel strong.
Commitment: 10 months (anywhere from two to four times per week
due to our household schedule changing each week).
Results: More muscle, faster recovery times, reduction in body fat in
those pesky areas.
I have never been a gym-class junkie, so that’s not what I was looking for.
1 More Round is a boxing gym and it does not pretend to be anything
else. There are regular programmes that see you train and eat like a
boxer, to get you fighting fit, with the ultimate end-goal being to take
to the ring for an exhibition bout. Yet, the environment and culture is
embracing to all fitness levels, you are progressed at your own individual
level, and encouraged to push yourself beyond your comfort levels. The
motto on the door says it all: Work, hunt, win… TOGETHER.
I keep going back because the team walk the talk. You are trained by
professional boxers or boxers who have been in the ring, so they know
what it takes to transform your body, helping it become the best version
of you – aiding you in day-to-day life or in the ring.
It’s great for those who have trained the same way for years and want
to push themselves – our bodies change over time and we are easily
trapped into our own mindset of our body’s capabilities. It’s also good
for anyone just starting out and wanting to be in a supportive, highenergy
team environment that keeps you motivated and those who have
thought about boxing but always imagined it to be a testosterone-fuelled
environment – 1 More Round is not.
As a result, my strength and endurance has significantly improved.
Over the winter sport season I felt stronger on court and my recovery
times have become a lot shorter. Mentally I know that if I think I am at
my physical limits, I can still push a little further.
YOGA & PILATES
“Pilates is an exercise for all – no matter what age, stage or
fitness level. It’s a form of exercise that’s easy on the back,
gentle on joints and great for core strength. The merging of
physical awareness and mental energy means it’s great for
stress reduction, too,” says Gemma McCaw.
“Adding yoga to your weekly routine can help transform
your body, mind and soul. It can help enhance strength,
balance, endurance and flexibility. But the benefits are far
more than just physical – yoga can help reduce stress, curb
cravings and improve our moods.”
On Pointe Barre Studio
Home of Bootybarre in Christchurch. Offers a range of
classes that fuse techniques from dance, Pilates, and yoga
that will tone, define and chisel the whole body.
ZOE
Prior fitness level: Low.
Goal: To build muscle, become stronger and tone up without
weight-loss.
Commitment: Trialled three classes – Bootybarre Bliss,
Bootybarre Flex & Flow and Bootybarre Plus.
Results: Even after a week, I could see how tone and strength
would increase with continued attendance. The yoga and
Pilates elements ensured you left each class feeling centred.
Bootybarre Bliss, a ‘slower-paced class’, is safe for the body
and good for those with common complaints such as arthritis,
joint inflexibility and balance issues; Bootybarre Flex & Flow is
a longer session that focuses on each section of the body, with
exercises being more intense and utilising both barres and
stretch bands; and Bootybarre Plus is a major step up, in terms
of intensity and pace, with a class that uses a mixture of the
floor, mats, barre, sliders, balls and stretch bands.
No matter the class, there is a real focus on stretching
afterwards – as improving suppleness can be very beneficial
for women of all ages. Each offers something different, but also
flow well with each other.
I was surprised at this approach to exercise and didn’t
expect it to push my body as hard as it did! After every class I
was left feeling energised and focused for the rest of the day.
If you are wishing to explore a more ‘low impact’ form of
exercise that still tones and strengthens, then this is for you.
The combination of relatively small group classes, positive
female instructors, empowerment through encouragement
and fun upbeat music really made it an enjoyable and inviting
experience. For the men interested, they’ve also been known
to host a few boys’ nights!
GYM
“An all access gym provides the
opportunity to move your body in more
ways than one, however it is crucial
you discuss what you are wishing to
achieve with an expert in that area and
get them to safely take you through
the right techniques and elements of a
gym,” Gemma advises.
Female Federation
A women-only gym in Ferrymead.
Features a wide range of strength and
cardio equipment, classes, personal
training and small group training, with
24/7 access.
ELLA
Prior fitness level: Fairly active with a
penchant for eating too many carbs.
Goal: To increase my fitness levels and
work out enough to justify aforementioned
carbs.
Commitment: Four months, attending
twice a week on average.
Results: I genuinely enjoy a 6am Spin class,
my fitness levels are the best they’ve been
and I’ve adopted a far healthier lifestyle (for
the most part).
I joined Female Federation a few
months ago and, as with previous gym
memberships, predicted I would visit just
a few times a month, without ever really
pushing myself. But just days after my
orientation with owner Meg Bolderston, I
was hooked and more motivated than ever
as a result of the inspiring and enthusiastic
ethos of the gym.
The female-only premise makes it an
extremely comfortable space, in which
gym newbies can experiment with weights
and different equipment. The real magic
happens in the studio, where each morning
before work I’m able to attend a new,
exciting class that feels less like a work out
and more like a party. Classes include Spin,
Zumba, Pump, Yoga, Circuit, BAT (bum,
abs, thighs) Strength, HIIT, and Balance.
Being open 24 hours a day, rules out
another excuse to get out of any potential
workouts. For mums, a child-minding
service comes as part of membership.

GET A MOVE ON
Like everything in life, balance is what will be the key
to your ongoing success.
“Your personal fitness goals and motivations will
guide you in your specific needs, but generally there
is no one type of fitness as the only option, unless
you are training for a specific event in which it is
best to have a training programme,” says Gemma.
“It comes down to understanding your specific
needs and your desired outcomes and taking into
account your age, previous injury or illness and
current fitness level.”
So, look for fitness options that will motivate you
to keep up the good work, talk to a professional to
ensure your newfound enthusiasm doesn’t result in
injury, and keep things interesting – and effective –
by developing a multi-pronged attack to your longterm
fitness gains. You’ll be fighting fit and loving life
FROM LEFT:
Ellis and Paige
Success
Story
For Paige and Ellis Powerman, fitness is
more than a way of life, it’s business.
What led to the purchase of 9Round Christchurch City and
9Round Papanui?
Paige: I had been a personal trainer for a number of years and
was the manager of a fitness club, while Ellis was originally a
painter when she moved over from the UK. We were at a point
in life where we wanted to drive our own brands and businesses,
but the love of health and fitness was the main factor in us
wanting to buy a fitness facility. We knew so many individuals
who joined a normal gym found it hard to achieve their results
because of five main factors: motivation, variety, knowledge,
support and monitoring progress. We want to help people
actually achieve success in whatever that may be for them.
9Round was our first step in being able to do that on a
larger scale.
As part of a franchise, developed in America in 2008, can you
still bring business innovation to these fitness centres?
Paige: Absolutely. Ellis and I focus very heavily on fundraising
and helping the wider community. Last year we helped raise
$133,000 for the Mental Health Foundation and we are currently
the official sponsors for the Heroes Rugby Club based in
Christchurch.
Ellis: We run free boot camps most Sundays to help support
members and their goals by supplying them with outdoor
workouts and we run seminars to help increase the knowledge
of members’ families and friends who are also trying to achieve
their goals.
How has fitness impacted on you personally?
Paige: We are huge believers in practising what we preach. We
cannot tell members, family, friends or even staff members to
exercise if we don’t ourselves!
Currently, fitness helps us mainly mentally. So many people say
they don’t have time to work out, we call their bluff. We work
for a minimum of 10-12 hours most days but still work out
six times per week. Exercising sets us up for the day, mentally
and physically! We become more productive, efficient and, as
we work physical jobs, we have more energy to encourage
and motivate others. Plus, we are just nicer people when we
exercise!
Ellis: Our staff mean a lot to us and obviously help us in our drive
to help others. So, showing them that exercise is a vital part of
their day really motivates them (we hope!). We want to be there
for them when they are also feeling low or down so our mental
strength is vital to not only our lives but those of our members
and staff as well.
What does ‘success’ look like in your business?
Ellis: Simply put, making someone happier and healthier – long
term. Our recent 8 Week Challenge saw one of our members
lose 28kg and go from diabetic to pre-diabetic. Since then
they have lost another 32kg. This was just one of the many
success stories.
Paige: Every day, hearing how people are going and that they are
just happier motivates us to continue to do what we do. This is
something we will never give up on.
And lastly, because you can’t always be good… what are your
guilty pleasures?
Paige: Haha! Ellis can’t say no to hot chips. They might just be
the “best chips in the world! And what if I miss them?” Her
favourite currently are either at Joe’s Garage or New York Deli.
Other guilty pleasures consist of Maltesers and white chocolate
Toblerone.
Ellis: Anyone in this world who knows Paige knows how big her
addiction to peanut butter is! For her birthday this year she got
seven jars plus four boxes of peanut butter slugs (snack size).
Pic’s is her numero uno, but also loves Peanut Butter and Co.
Salted caramel Lindt chocolate balls and Cookie Times are a
winner in her books also.
“Auction Day rolled around and we
had 6 Aside agreements. Bidding was
very competitive and the final price
exceeded our expectations by 15%.
Mary’s results are not a fluke, but a
direct result of the hard work and effort
that she puts in. We honestly feel that
she worked on our behalf and achieved
the highest price for us in a tough,
competitive real estate market.”
BREAKING
BAD HABITS
Ella James suggests three simple ways to make a
change for good in the world.
I’ll be the first to put my hand up to say that, quite
frankly, I couldn’t define sustainability if I tried.
However, I could hazard a guess that the fast-fashion
we all purchase in a careless, hypodermic manner
probably doesn’t fit the bill. Perhaps, like me, your
intentions are good but you require a little educating on
this topic so that you’re able to make better choices as a
conscious consumer.
There are so many questions that I have about
sustainability: Does it mean I can only wear hemp from
here on in? Am I to refrain from washing my clothes
forever more? The answer, thank goodness, is no.
1. CARPOOL
Heading shopping with your friends on the weekend?
Instead of driving separately, jump in one vehicle together.
From engine noise and fuel spills, to gases including
carbon dioxide; the pollutants that are emitted by cars
cause both short- and long-term environmental damage.
So hopping in a car together instead of travelling alone has
obvious environmental benefits that you’ll be rewarded
for in turn. Parking and petrol costs will be a fraction of
the price once divided. Perhaps the best thing about car
sharing is that you’ll only require a single designated driver,
so you’re free to get the pinot flowing at lunchtime.

2. GIVE IT BACK
We often find it hard to leave that new dress on the rack or that
must-have mascara on the shelf, and that’s okay. Before or after
a shopping spree, have a clear out and dispose of any unwanted
goods responsibly. Wondering what you’ll get in return? Well,
extra space in your wardrobe for starters.
But some brands have even put schemes into place that reward
you for saving a few items from the landfill. H&M will give you
store vouchers for your old, unwanted clothes. MAC cosmetics
will give you a free lipstick when you return six empty makeup
containers. A new wardrobe and fresh lippy are yours for the
taking, so get donating.
3. EAT LOCALLY
Once you’ve carpooled into town with your friends, spent your
H&M voucher and claimed your free lipstick, you’re bound to be
feeling more than a little peckish. The choice you make regarding
your lunchtime reservation can actually have a huge impact on
the environment given that some foods literally travel thousands
of miles before they reach your plate. Personally, we prefer the
paddock-to-plate approach. Locally sourced ingredients are more
likely to be chemical and preservative free with a reduced chance
of contamination due to the shorter distances that they travel,
surely making for a more delicious meal overall.
You can adopt this attitude for cooking at home by shopping
for produce at your local farmers’ market, where delicious
seasonal ingredients are available in abundance. Not to mention,
when you shop at your local market, you’re supporting your local
community. Just don’t forget to take your reusable bags.
Pollution into solution
A Canterbury company is tackling the enormous amounts of plastic debris
floating around our oceans by turning plastic that ends up on the beach into
jandals to wear to the beach. The Subs jandal range is made totally from plastic
sourced from beach cleanups and recycling. Every pair purchased funds the
removal of another half a kilo of plastic trash from the ocean (they’ve fished out
more than 126,000kg to date). The soles and straps of the slender or regular
fit range are 100% recyclable and durable, but once they do wear out, you can
return them to Subs to upcycle.
Kudos to Carlsberg
The Danish beer behemoth is replacing plastic ring can holders
with a recyclable glue in new Snap Pack six-packs. Greenpeace
estimates 12.7 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the oceans
annually and Carlsberg claims its packaging innovation, which
came after trialling 4000 glues, will reduce the plastic waste it
generates by 76 per cent and reduce global plastic waste by 1200
tonnes per year. That’s the equivalent of 60 million plastic bags.
Already launched in the UK, the new packaging will be rolled out
worldwide next year. Expect to see other brands follow suit.
Sweet plastic
Ecostore has a sweet solution to the
problem of plastic packaging. Most
plastic is made from non-sustainable
petrochemicals, which doesn’t sit
well with Ecostore’s ethos. So, from
2014, it has only been using plastic
bottles made from sugarcane. Sugar
plastic is renewable, captures rather
than releases carbon, and the bottles
are kerbside recyclable.
you ever find the sun in your eyes, you needn’t leave
your chair, simply sit back, relax and use the remote
control provided to alter the blades’ angle, easily
filtering out those harsh rays.
Stratco’s systems include a rain sensor as standard,
so, if you are not home when it starts to rain, the unit
will close automatically.
Can you add louvres to an existing veranda?
It’s no problem to retrofit a louvre system into any
veranda/pergola frame – just request a free site
measure to determine the finer details.
How long does the process take from concept to
finished product?
Stratco’s louvre systems can be in place six weeks from
the order date. The time for the qualified professional
to install the system itself is usually two days.
Is it okay to look to this option for an area prone to
strong winds?
Once the unit is measured at your home, Stratco runs
each unit through an engineering programme designed
to confirm strength of system to suit your wind zone.
Winner or sinner?
You want to do the right thing when it comes to recycling but there’s a high chance
you’re not. Gaynor Stanley explores how Christchurch homeowners are faring in
the war against an ever-increasing landfill problem. You might find your recycling
habits in need of a refresh.
Scary stats
• Every year, New Zealand buries 2.5 million tonnes of waste
in landfill – yet three quarters of it could have been reused,
recycled or composted.
• Christchurch’s recycling facility, EcoSort, processes 25 tonnes
of yellow bin contents an hour. Up to six per cent of that
(that’s 1.5 tonnes an hour) is contaminated and must instead
be directed to the Kate Valley landfill.
• Our wheelie bin waste increases 25 per cent after Labour
Weekend, when we start entertaining and buying new things.
• Half a tonne of disposable nappies are erroneously put in
Christchurch yellow bins daily.
• Though extremely dangerous, 500 LPG cylinders are chucked
in local yellow bins each year, and even more helium cylinders
and car batteries.
What happens to the contents of my yellow bin?
Kerbside collection trucks from all five Christchurch-area
councils dump their loads on to a massive pile on the floor
of EcoSort’s Material Recovery Facility on Parkhouse Road,
Wigram.
A loader gradually transfers the tangle of recycled materials
to a 30 metre-long conveyor belt that will, over the next 50
minutes, separate materials by size and shape using paper
screens, optical sorters, magnets and air classifiers. Once
grouped into paper, cardboard, steel or aluminium cans, and
either PET and clear plastic bottles or mixed grade plastics,
each material is then baled to be sold for reuse. Some plastics
find a new home locally; the mixed grade is all exported to
primarily Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Everything is first sorted by people
The first stage of the conveyor belt involves a team of people
manually removing contaminated items that will otherwise
damage the plant.
So, spare a thought for these people next time you go to
drop disposable nappies or containers that aren’t clean of
contaminating food into your yellow bin.
The human sorters also remove 35-45 tonnes a month of
appliances, tools, bike and car parts, fire extinguishers – and
even ammunition – from the belt.
Every day, two or three hours is lost to breakdowns caused
by contaminated items that slip through.
Every night, a whole shift is rostered just to clear the belt’s
rotating wheels of tangled materials like clothing and fishing line.

Common mistakes
There is a misconception that everything recyclable can be
channelled via our yellow bin. But many products that are
recyclable cannot be processed by the automated facility. Quite
simply, to keep up with the volume of waste we generate,
EcoSort’s automated process is restricted to readily recyclable
materials for which there is market demand.
So, while items like gas cylinders, car batteries, sporting goods,
tools and household items in working order can be recycled, the
only way to achieve this is take them to one of three EcoDrop
depots (Bromley, Parkhouse and Styx Mill).
You may think you are being a tidy Kiwi by bundling your
newspapers or bagging your recycling. However, the automated
line and optical sorters cannot identify items within a bag and it isn’t
time efficient for a person to open it for manual sorting – and, you
guessed it, your whole bag of recycling will be sent to Kate Valley
instead. So, keep items loose.
Don’t compact the contents of your bin either. The sorter finds
it harder to recognise items that are crushed out of their usual
shape.
Don’t leave the lids on – read on to see why we should go
topless this summer.
What do the plastic numbers mean?
These are Resin Identification Codes, indicating the seven types of
thermoplastics that can be melted down and recycled. In theory.
In practice, the symbols can be misleading because New Zealand
doesn’t recycle plastic #6 – polystyrene – at all. That’s why you
shouldn’t put your meat trays in the yellow bin (put them in the
red bin).
Also, some plastics in categories we do recycle – like milk bottle
lids (#2) – are sifted out of the recycling process into landfill
because the lids are too small to be baled. Worse still, if you leave
the lid on, the bottle itself then can’t be recycled either because
it is often a differing material. So that’s why we’re directed to put
all lids into our red bin. Similarly, wine bottle lids are likely to be
aluminium or alloy and contaminate glass recycling.
A good rule of thumb is if plastic is scrunchable, it can’t be
recycled. Detach any flimsy plastic film (and red bin it) from
otherwise recyclable cardboard or plastic containers to avoid
contaminating the recyclable material.
Did you know?
The Christchurch City Council recently
stopped accepting supermarket shopping
bags and tetra pak cartons in its yellow
bins and EcoSort will follow suit from June
2019. These must all now go in the red
bin, even if they are marked compostable
or biodegradeable. Council Solid Waste
Manager Ross Trotter says the tightening
of the global recycling market is driving the
changes. “Compostable and biodegradable
bags are unfortunately very difficult to
distinguish from plastic bags but if they get
mixed in with plastic they contaminate
the product. The markets we send our
plastics to only want good quality plastics
and the best way we can ensure that is by
eliminating bags from the recycling stream.”
So why can’t the eco-ones go into
green wheelie bin either? “Unfortunately
the majority of compostable bags that are
available on the market are made from
genetically modified corn-starch which is
not compostable at our processing plant
because it doesn’t break-down within the
three-month processing timeframe.”
All is not lost, however. The Packaging
Forum offers a soft plastic recycling scheme
that provides bins that will take such items
as: bread bags, frozen food bags, toilet
paper packaging, chip bags, pasta and rice
bags, courier bags, shopping bags and fresh
produce bags, and more. Though not cling
THE BEST AND
THE WORST OF
MOVING!
We recently ran a competition on our Facebook page and we asked the participants to tell us what they thought
was the worst thing about moving homes. With over 102 entries, that had us laughing and crying at the same
time, we realised being in the business allows us to provide good tips about how to take the stress out of moving,
so here they are.
1. Start early. Packing always takes longer than people expect, and
doing a little each day is much less stressful than trying to do it all
right before your movers arrive.
2. You’re going to need a lot of boxes... and packing materials, and I
mean a lot. Whatever your estimate is for what you think you need,
double it. Make sure you have boxes in a variety of sizes.
3. Start by packing the rooms and items that are not in daily use.
Pack your kitchen last, and label each box clearly with the contents
and where you want it in your new home. Be as specific about the
contents of each box as possible, especially with kitchen items.
It will make unpacking so much easier. And even though it should
go without saying, don’t pack keys, computers, jewellery or
important paperwork and make up one box with everything you
need to make a cuppa!
6. Clean out now. Nothing motivates people to de-clutter and purge
more than having to wrap, pack and unpack all of their possessions.
You probably won’t have time to clean out every room or every
closet, but if you haven’t used or worn something in a long time or
no longer like it, don’t pay the movers to transport it. Set it aside to
donate, give away or sell prior to your move.
7. Prepare the new home. Whether you are buying or renting your
new home, put some thought into any cosmetic changes that
can be made before you move in. Painting will be easier without
furniture in the room. Schedule a carpet cleaning at the new place
and send rugs out for cleaning a couple of weeks before you move.
If you’re considering refinishing floors, you need to do it before
you move. And last but not least, thoroughly clean your new home
before the move. Once everything is in, it is much more difficult to
do a comprehensive cleaning.
4. Plan the spaces. To save time on moving day and to give yourself
some peace of mind, plot where you are going to put everything
in your new place. If possible, take measurements, especially of
key walls or spaces where big pieces, such as wall units or media
cabinets, could be placed. You probably will have to improvise a
little on moving day, but you don’t want to be debating furniture
placement while the movers are being paid by the hour.
Sitaras gym in New York is
the only option for city’s elite.
Memberships are capped to just
200 with television presenters,
politicians and models filling the
majority. At Sitaras, scientific data
is continuously collected and
analysed to precisely track your
progress and prevent plateauing.
It’s speculated that Sitaras is one of
the most expensive gyms on the
planet. While prices aren’t disclosed
until you’ve been put through your
paces at an initial consultation and
assessment, numerous sources
speak of an annual fee that exceeds
$13,760. Oh, and your very best
excuses for skipping the gym just
won’t fly here, as all members are
contractually obliged to attend two
DESIGNING
WITH AND FOR THE
ENVIRONMENT
Architect Richard Dalman considers how we might build more sustainably.
The construction and operation of buildings is a major
contributor to the demise of our natural environment.
According to the US Green Building Council, buildings worldwide
account for 33% of all carbon dioxide emissions and 40% of
material and energy use.
I believe it is incumbent upon architects and everyone else in the
construction industry to lift our games and design and build more
sustainably. Here are my top 10 tips to achieve this.
1. Consider site ecology and design with the environment, not
against it. Take time to really understand the local culture,
climate and geography of the area you are designing for, and
take account of these things before you draw the first line.
2. Good passive design can save on potential energy costs. By
passive design I mean how we can detail the built-in structure
and building fabric that doesn’t require energy to ‘operate’
during a building’s life. For example, overhanging eaves can
keep out sun that overheats a building during the summer,
but allow sun in during the winter when it is needed. Exposed
thermal mass such as concrete and stone within a building
can absorb heat during the day and release it at night as
temperatures cool down. Above-code insulation along with
double and triple glazing and thermally bridged window joinery
can help keep the heat in. Position the building to maximise
sunshine and shade when needed, and shelter from or access
to cooling breezes as required.
3. Carefully select your materials. These can be fully recycled or
made from reconstructed materials, and/or can be selected
because they can be recycled again. Minimise high embodied
energy materials such as steel and concrete, and try to use fully
renewable materials such as timber.
4. Think carefully about occupant health. Provide good access to
sunlight and natural ventilation. Select materials with low volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) and look out for certification from
the New Zealand independent environmental certification
system “Environmental Choice”. For example, select
environmental-certified paints that have low off-gassing.

5. If you purchase locally made furniture and fittings then not
only will your building interiors have an authentic local feel,
but you will eliminate pollution created by shipping and
other forms of transport.
6. Energy efficiency is a key aspect in saving power, saving
money, and making your building more sustainable. Use
LED lighting that draws very little power, and better still,
use as much natural light as possible during the day so
you don’t need artificial lighting. Use Building Management
Systems (BMS) to control and refine the amount of
energy used for air conditioning, heating and lighting
throughout different times of day and year to ensure
no power is wasted.
7. While water is a relatively abundant resource in our part
of the country, it is starting to become more of a precious
commodity. Lately in Christchurch we are being asked to
conserve water. We should be looking at ways to use water
wisely with low-flow tapware and showerheads.
8. Take advantage of appropriate technology to save energy
and reduce overheating. Some examples of this are
electronic louvres that adjust depending upon internal
temperatures and the need for shade and sunlight, or high
level windows that open and close depending upon the
need for ventilation and cooling. These can be controlled
from an internal thermostat. Photovoltaic energy cells are
becoming more efficient and affordable, and are a great way
to generate your own electricity from the sun.
9. During construction we should look to reduce wastage
through good planning and clever construction techniques.
Look to recycle offcuts, and separate out other recyclable
waste materials. Also consider how we can create the
minimum impact on the site and surrounding areas through
the construction process.
10. Finally, these days we tend to build too big, using up more
space and energy than is actually needed. There is a trend
worldwide to build smaller, not only saving on materials, but
also energy during construction and the life of the building.
While all of these ways to build more sustainably obviously go
a long way to saving energy and our earth’s resources, many of
them also cost nothing or very little to implement, but more
importantly, save money in the long run. They stack up both
environmentally and financially.

Restoring
BEAUTY
The process of building
a home can be
daunting, especially
for first-timers. Yet,
in the right hands,
you’ll soon have all the
answers you need. We
talk to Jonny Collett
of J E Collett Builders
Ltd to find out what
we should be thinking
about when a new
home is on the horizon.
jecollettbuilders.co.nz
Where do we start – the right section
or the right home design?
The right home design. Homes need to
be designed for you and your family’s
needs first – wants come second. This
way you don’t clutter the home with
meaningless details or unnecessary build
cost. The flipside to this is, can we have
our home design built where we want
to live due to section size – i.e. will the
home fit? Planning for your future is key
to answering both of these questions.
What is the five-year plan? What is the
10-year plan?
What are some of the building
challenges most often overlooked?
Setting the expectation of the clients
is the number 1 priority. From design,
management, build and delivery of the
project. Building or renovating should be
fun – not stressful.
What should our expectations be
around budgets?
Regardless of whether you are renovating
or building from scratch, this is going to
be your largest asset. You want to be
spending your allocated funding correctly
to add value to your asset. This, in turn,
will provide you with added value in your
lifestyle. Talking to your builder around
design, early in the process, can help you
understand budgets and true costing.
Kitchens are expensive – but do you
really need a stone benchtop…?
What are some key ways to maximise
space?
Have a look at your lifestyle and design
your home around that. If you love the
outdoors – you are going to need a
bigger garage. If you like the arts – you
will need a larger living room and more
wall space to potentially hang paintings.
Think lifestyle – not clutter!
Is it difficult to incorporate ecoconscious
principles into a build?
No, not at all, and we all have a moral
obligation to endorse eco-conscious
principles. This comes down to design
and material sizing to match, waste
management, recycling timber where fit
and looking after the onsite environment.

AN OASIS FOR
YOUR MIND
Throw open the doors, walk barefoot across the grass and just... be.
Appreciate what you have around you to reach the ultimate mindfulness moment.
Words Wendy Megget

STYLE | landscaping 47
W
hen you go out into your garden, are you truly present? Are you really
experiencing each moment? The smell of the plants; the touch of a leaf on your
shoulder; the feel of dirt between your fingers? Or are you thinking about your list of
chores, planning a birthday party, or even talking on the phone?
Jon Kabat-Zinn is the founder of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
programme, which he developed to help patients deal with stress, pain and illness
at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He defines mindfulness as the
“awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment,
non-judgementally”. If you are not experiencing the moments in your life as they occur,
but are instead thinking about the past or future, then are you really living this life? If
you spend your life thinking and not experiencing, then your life is really just an illusion
created by your mind. Your actual life is passing you by, while you are thinking about
what you are having for dinner tonight.
It is, of course, the very nature of the mind to wander, and this is okay. When you
realise it has happened, just gently bring it back. Herein lies the practice. There is no
point in doing this for 20 minutes sitting on a cushion in the morning, then being a
frazzled animal for the rest of the day. Being mindful during the day gives you your true
life experience back, and correspondingly the joy that comes from little things that you
may otherwise miss.
A garden is an ideal place to practise mindfulness, containing so many things to
be consciously aware of – things that activate the senses. The call of a thrush in the
evening air; the smell of freshly cut wood; the softness of a petal. If you cannot be
mindful in your garden, how on earth can you be mindful in the rest of your life?
So, how can you design a garden to help you remain mindful? The answer is to
provide as many things as possible to activate your five senses, to remind you to come
back into the moment, each time you experience them.
If you are a foodie, your garden is
likely to be more about tastes.
Generations have survived eating sweet
organic carrots fresh from the ground,
washed under hose water,
so go ahead and taste your way
through your garden.
But before we begin, please take your magazine and cuppa
outside, sit or stand, and simply observe your garden. Perhaps
it’s the colour of the flowers, the sound of a dog barking in
the distance, the smell of lavender, the taste of parsley from
a nearby pot, or the breeze brushing your face. Completely
immerse yourself in the experience you are having in your
garden. Don’t judge anything as good or bad (even the
barking), just be aware of it all. This is mindfulness, and it is the
true and full experience of this moment in your life.
Now that you’ve experienced a moment of mindfulness,
was there anything you would have liked to add to your
experience? Don’t think about what other people would want.
It’s all about what brings you back into yourself.
Having been brought up immersed in music, I love to sit in
my garden and listen to the sounds around me and the tunes
of nature. The wind chimes sing their song; the neighbour’s
children make sounds of delight as they play; the wind rustles
through the cabbage trees.
If you pay attention, you will discover noises you have never
noticed before. But think about what sounds you would like to
hear in your garden. If you want more birds, start encouraging
them with food. If you want music, add wind chimes or a
Japanese water fountain. If you want to hear the wind, plant
trees that catch and move with the breeze.
If you are more intrigued by tactile things, enjoying the feel of
different textures, then perhaps start by taking off your shoes
and gloves. The senses can be activated by basic things, as well
as the sublime. Don’t forget to feel the roughness of the spade
in your hand, as well as the softness of lamb’s ear or hare’s tail
grass. Become familiar with the feel of the bark on every tree in
your garden. Even the cut of a rose thorn can be observed in a
mindful way, just before you mindfully run for a plaster.
If you are a foodie, your garden is likely to be more about
tastes. Generations have survived eating sweet organic carrots
fresh from the ground, washed under hose water, so go ahead
and taste your way through your garden. Sneak a strawberry –
no one will know. Crunch some mint. Steal a handful of cherry
tomatoes. Create a smorgasbord in your backyard.
Don’t eat absently, like we often do, shovelling down
breakfast while racing out the door. Notice the smell before
you even put it in your mouth; then the textures and flavours
as you chew. When you stop to really taste your food, you will
be surprised by the things you never noticed before.
Some of you may be more about the visual feast. Maybe
you want a rainbow of colours? Maybe you want every flower
to be pink? Maybe you want every shade of green under the
sun? Think about the light in your garden. Use glass to tint and
reflect it, glinting in your eye as you walk by. Think of your
garden as a canvas – throw as much paint at it as you can.
Something that seems to have been lost in modern gardens
(and florists) is fragrance. If you are willing to sacrifice this for
beauty, then that is your prerogative. But if you love wonderful
smells as much as me, fill your garden with fragrant herbs,
jasmine, daphne, violets, jonquils and scented roses. Again,
don’t forget the simple smells – soil, cut grass, drying firewood
and even impending rain.
So, now you should have some idea of what you want in
your own mindful garden. Make it an experience for the senses
and I promise your mind will follow with peace and serenity.
Namaste.

Where the
wild things are
In a world where screens are all too prevalent, making a
conscious effort to create child-friendly outdoor spaces has
become very important. Craig Wilson suggests a few key
additions that will enable kids to let their imaginations
run wild in your own backyard.
Often when we consider the design
of our outdoor spaces, we focus
on things like resale appeal, keeping up
with the latest trends or being careful
not to over-capitalise. In our efforts to
be diligent we can sometimes lose sight
of the important intangible attributes a
great backyard can provide. One of those
may well be how much opportunity it
will provide for your kids or grandkids to
enjoy the space. Your backyard may be
one of the key ‘memory-making’ spaces
for children as they grow up.
There are plenty of great ways to
incorporate ‘play’ into a family friendly
backyard area. Here are a couple of
thoughts you may be able to utilise at
your own place.
The littlies love a good sandpit to dig in.
These are often best located in an area
with morning sun and good afternoon
shade, preferably visible from the main
living areas of the house. Make sure you
work out an effective system to cover
the sandpit when it’s not in use, to stop
neighbourhood cats leaving their calling
cards. When the kids have outgrown it,
you can remove the structure or plant it
out as a vege garden.
A playhouse can be hours of fun
for kids.
These can work well tucked into a
corner of the garden, nestled amongst
some larger plantings and orientated to
capture all-day sun. A durable, waterproof
structure can act as an occasional
summer ‘sleep out’ for teenagers and,
in years to come, may be suitable for
a garden studio or potting shed for
yourself.
Mature trees are great for climbing,
and more.
If you are fortunate enough to have one
on your property, a large tree offers
hours of low-tech fun developing handeye
co-ordination and gross motor skills
for your kids. Even better, it could also
suit a swing or tree hut. An established
weeping elm left unpruned will eventually
create its own ‘outdoor room’ with
curtains of layered leaves reaching right
to the ground. If you are considering
planting a climbing tree – time is not on
your side… depending on the species of
tree you select it could be a minimum of
10-15 years before it reaches a suitable
size to climb.
An area for ‘messy’ play.
Research has shown the best garden
play-space for our children is an area
where they can freely create whatever
their heart desires – and mess doesn’t
matter. This means somewhere they can
dig, make mud and build huts … This,
thankfully, doesn’t need to be the totality
of your garden space and application in a
suburban section might be behind some
higher growing shrubs along a fence line
or a space tucked behind the garage.
Keep in mind it won’t be needed forever
and once the kids are a little older you
can return the area back to something
more restful and pleasing to your eye.
EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
with Tim Goom
Updating your
outdoors to fit
your life.
Think back to when your children were young- the ideal
garden involved plenty of lawn, a trampoline, perhaps a
jungle gym or a play house. Space and activities to occupy
busy little people was a must.
If you have moved to the next phase, it is possibly with a sense of nostalgia
that you consider these once adored but now abandoned garden features.
As children grow and enter the teen years, the idea of spending every
moment in close proximity to their family starts to lose its sheen- and let’s
face it, sometimes parents also need space to unwind, away from their
boisterous teenagers!
The key is configuring your space to meet everyone’s needs. Indooroutdoor
flow and entertainment become the main priority. Creating an
entertainment hub on your property will develop your landscape into an
oasis for grown-ups and teens alike!
An Outdoor room
Nothing improves indoor-outdoor flow quite like an outdoor room. With
our erratic climate, Christchurch and Central Otago doesn’t often have
ideal conditions for outdoor entertaining. Adding structures to mitigate
wind, offer shelter from the scorching summer sun, and retain heat in
winter will extend your usable living space and draw you outside year
round. An outdoor room will also provide a haven for your teens and their
friends, where they can have their space and freedom whilst still allowing
you to keep tabs on them. An outdoor room can be fitted out very simply
or contain all the bells and whistles- think pool table, TV, sound system,
fireplace, bar.
At first glance, an outdoor room may seem a significant financial
commitment, but not compared to the addition of a room to your house
which is exponentially more expensive!
Pool
Soaring summer temperatures can turn even the most mild-mannered of
us into a cranky sloth- When it is so hot you don’t know what to do with
yourself, nothing beats cooling off in a pool.
by Goom
Possibly one of the best ways to remain synched into what your teens are
getting up to is by being the home his or her friends want to spend time
at. A pool is a definite magnet for your teen’s friends (and probably for
your own on a blistering day!).
Outdoor fire
Having a heat source outdoors, whether an outdoor fire, heater, pizza
oven or BBQ, instantly creates a warm and inviting ambience to welcome
guests in to your outdoor entertaining space. It will also obviously greatly
extend its use into the chillier months.
Many are discouraged from acting with urgency in terms of landscaping
improvements because the decisions involved seem overwhelming: How
much will it cost? Who do I contact? How do I manage subcontractors?
How will I manage the project in addition to an already at capacity family
and work life?
Goom Landscapes removes this stress. Our easy and flexible process
involves creating a design tailored specifically for you, your property and
your budget. We explain the costs of design at the first presentation
meeting – giving you full cost certainty from the outset. We understand
that our clients have a variety of budgets and time constraints so you
can choose to stage the project if that suits you better – have the deck
completed so you can enjoy it this summer, then finish the remainder
of your landscape next season. Alternatively, you could put your entire
project on hold while you save up to build it, knowing exactly the design
and costs involved.
Call Goom Landscapes today to discuss redesigning your outdoors
to fit your next phase.
COLOUR WITHOUT
CRUELTY
From Chelsea, London, comes a nailcare
range that is not only cruelty-free, but
certified vegan and halal (no alcohol or
animal-derived ingredients), gluten-free,
as well as ‘12 free’ (meaning devoid
of the 12 top chemical baddies). By
Nailberry, L’Oxygene nail polishes are
even breathable – with water vapour
able to permeate the polish, ensuring
your natural nail still gets its daily dose of
oxygen. The 42 shades promise longwear,
intense gloss, and high impact
colour to boot. Exclusively stocked in
New Zealand at WE-AR (we-ar.com)
BEAUTY
NEWS
and think about how you can minimise
waste and cut out the chemicals.
STRONG, PEARLY WHITES
Who knew you should be looking for sea
salt and magnolia bark in a toothpaste?
Bonus points if you find hydroxyapatite
as this naturally occurring mineral, already
in our teeth, serves as an alternative to
fluoride, restoring defects in tooth enamel
and reversing early tooth decay. Combine
these three key ingredients together and
you get Grin’s latest addition, 100% Natural
Strengthening Toothpaste. All from the
only natural toothpaste brand you’ll find
at the dentist, as well as supermarkets and
pharmacies. grinnatural.co.nz
NOT JUST
FOR HIPPIES
Are you an non-believer? Is
the only makeup you’d put
your faith in one that boasts
a human-perfected formula?
Well, if you were going to put
a cosmetic line to the test,
surely it doesn’t get much
more intense than New York
Fashion Week. This year,
vegan and cruelty-free Aussie
brand INIKA Organic was the
official makeup for both the
Tadashi Shoji (left) and House
of Nonie shows. I don’t know
about you, but I think those
results are likely to please
more than just the vegans.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
Whether you’re a man looking for a look as slick as that
suit, or a woman wishing for legs as silky as that dress,
many of us will be reaching for a razor when the sun
comes out to play. Disposable ones have their place –
handy to keep in a toilet bag, at the ready for all forms
of sleepovers. But, if it’s going to end up in the bin one
day, get something you can put in the yellow one – like
the Preserve Shave 5, which has a handle made from
recycled #5 plastic (ohnatural.co.nz). It gets the green
tick, but if you really want to go plastic-free, look to a
safety razor – and we’re talking to you too, ladies. It
might take a bit to get used to, but, from what we’ve
heard, once you get the technique right (no pressure,
45-degree angle, care around the bony bits), then you’ll
be away.
We’re pining for the Rose Gold Single-Blade Razor by
Oui Shave, but until they sort out international shipping,
the Muhle R89 (fineshave.co.nz) comes in rose or yellow
gold.
STYLE TIP: Long handles and closed combs suit leg
shavers, and post-shave care is paramount.
Screen
it out
Clemency Alice gets us primed and ready to turn
our faces to the sun as the season approaches.
Sun exposure is one of the biggest threats to ageing
well and significantly contributes to premature ageing.
Outdoor exposure of UV rays stimulates melanin
production, which then produces increased pigmentation and
sunspots. Sun triggers an increase of free radicals in the body,
which cause skin collagen fibres to degenerate and premature
ageing. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, New
Zealand ranks second place in the Global Cancer Rates listing.
That is why it is so vital to have corrective sun protection as
part of your daily skin health routine.
Did you know a SPF 15 provides only 93 per cent protection,
whereas an SPF 30 provides 97 per cent and an SPF 50 provides
98 per cent? In your summer beauty regime, opt for a minimum
of SPF 30. Never fully rely on your SPF 15 tinted moisturiser for
full sun protection, instead select an SPF with a minimum of 30.
SUNCARE TRUTH: If you have an SPF 15 tinted moisturiser
and layer this with an SPF 30, the level of protection remains at
SPF 30, not as an SPF 45.
Apply a generous amount of your sun protection creme at least
30 minutes before stepping outdoors, and make sure to reapply
every few hours to ensure adequate sun protection. Remember
to apply also along jawline, ears, neck and decolletage. Protect
your skin from the sun even on those dull grey, overcast days.
UVA rays (responsible for ‘ageing’) are still able to reach your
skin. Sunscreen is the final step in your beauty routine, i.e. apply
over your moisturiser and before your foundation.
Invest in a pair of UV protection sunglasses, a wide-brimmed
hat that matches your style and a light cashmere shawl.
(We heart the latest collection of Karen Walker and
Prada eyewear.)
Using the shampoo, conditioner and
Anti Frizz products has made my hair
feel better than it has in a long time.
Best aspect? The bottles can be
refilled and a little goes a long way.
I wish... packaging was more durable.
Results? I have trouble finding the
right balance of products for my hair,
but with this line it seemed effortless.
The shampoo was brilliant. Due,
I’m sure, to the product’s natural
ingredients, it didn’t strip my hair like
most shampoos do. The conditioner
left my hair feeling light and silky.
After all that I wasn’t sure I needed
the Anti Frizz, but it did add a certain
something I didn’t know I was missing.
One word: converted!
Best aspect? The lack of sulphates,
parabens and carcinogenics.
I wish... I had a bigger set that could
be my long-term shower staple.
Results? Prior to this trial, my
hair was a disgrace. Sun-damaged
and with embarrassing dry ends,
I was holding out little hope for a
resurrection. Yet, from first use of
this shampoo and conditioner, I
could run my fingers through my wet
hair and, very quickly, softness and
shine returned. While the Anti Frizz
didn’t fit into my haphazard haircare
routine as often, it followed through
with its promise when required.
Enjoyed sampling the shampoo and
conditioner along with the Hair
Thickener.
Best aspect? Locally made from all
natural New Zealand ingredients,
what’s not to love?
I wish... packaging matched the
quality of the product.
Results? Gentle but effective. After
colouring my hair part way through
the trial I followed the instructions
to condition, shampoo, condition
and was able to achieve the same
softness and shine. I found the
Thickener an effortless way to
achieve those beachy tousled locks
ideal for summer.
STYLE
AND
sustainability
When it comes to fashion, do you really know what
constitutes as sustainable? Words Ella James
Edun Fall Winter 2018
There are so many questions that I have about sustainability: Does it mean that I can
only wear hemp from here on in? Am I to refrain from washing my clothes forever
more? The answer, thank goodness, is no.
So, let’s start from the top, shall we? What does sustainability mean?
It can be surmised that sustainability is the status achieved by meeting the needs of the
current consumer without compromising how future generations will be able to meet
theirs. So, bear with me, brands that claim sustainability must actively balance both the
short- and long-term supply and demand of their resources, without putting the planet,
their workers or the population at stake. Many of us might suggest that sustainability
is closely linked to environmental issues, but it’s less common knowledge that both
economic and social issues are also concerned.
Brands that are striving to produce sustainable products are not only efficient with
their resources (from materials, to dyes, to the methods used) but are also actively
bettering their practices to benefit the economic standing, as well as paying and treating
each staff member fairly and providing safe and comfortable working conditions.
Where possible,
try and avoid
trend-driven
garments.
Instead, opt for
capsule pieces
that have the
scope to be
worn across the
seasons.
What do I need to look for when shopping sustainably?
Naturally, the most sustainable way to shop would be to refrain from it all together,
but let’s be realistic here. We can and will continue to shop, but being educated on the
environmental, social and economic impacts that a brand has on the planet may induce
thought and consideration before dashing to the checkout.

STYLE | fashion 67
Gavin dress by Reformation
Ask yourself if you’re realistically going to
wear the garment that you’re holding in your
hand far more than once. Will it transition
nicely from season to season? Does it
complement your jackets and shoes? Is it a
high-quality garment that will stand the test
of time? And most importantly, does the
brand commit itself to sustainable practices?
Information regarding the latter will always
be readily available on the websites of those
brands who are proud of their efforts towards
obtaining sustainability.
Can sustainability ever be stylish?
In our defence, brands have long struggled to
create a balance of sustainability and aesthetic.
This has been an issue because as consumers,
we’re largely unwilling to compromise on
style, accessibility and price. Today, there’s
simply no excuse; gorgeously stylish garments
can now be conveniently purchased online
and on the high street, at prices that are now
able to compete with non-sustainable options.
Sustainability isn’t a short-lived trend, it’s
certainly here to stay, so you can rest assured
that your next sustainable investment will
never go out of style.
Where can I shop sustainably?
Sustainable brands used to be extremely few
and far between, meaning that consumers
would seal the deal with a convenient high
street options instead. We’re all a little guilty
of this, right?
But hold up because today, brands such
as Kowtow, Edun and People Tree cover
every style that we could ever desire, making
sustainable shopping a whole lot easier for all
of us. Fashion brand Reformation can name
every single person who’s involved in making
their clothes, and that’s certainly something
that we can get behind.
What steps can I take to be more
sustainable?
Where possible, try and avoid trend-driven
garments. Instead, opt for capsule pieces
that have the scope to be worn across the
seasons.
Shop second-hand. We’re actually spoilt
for choice with second-hand stores, so save a
garment from the landfill.
Fashion with a
conscience
Clothing brand Kowtow is fighting the corner for sustainable
clothing. With undeniably chic garments that are proven to merge
seamlessly from season to season, unperturbed by short-lived
trends, it’s little wonder that this Wellington-based brand is going
from strength to strength. We caught up with founder Gosia Piatek
to talk sustainability. Words Ella James
First things first, I often get overwhelmed about what to look
for when attempting to shop sustainably. What tips would
you give to any shoppers?
Don’t be shy! Ask the retail staff lots of questions. I think that
the questions need to be from the heart in order to demystify
exactly what constitutes as sustainable fashion.
When you founded Kowtow, was your primary focus on
sustainability or design?
Both. One cannot exist without the other. Whilst beautiful,
well-considered and high-quality design is essential, designers
now have the sustainable and ethical material choices that
abolish the need to compromise.
As a brand, did you find it easy sourcing sustainable materials
and adopting sustainable practices?
Whilst nothing worth having is easy, it’s imperative to practice
sustainability if we still want to live on this planet in 100 years.
There is no other option. We have never thought of creating
anything at Kowtow without asking a lot of in-depth questions
regarding sustainability and ethics; it’s our foundation and the
key to everything we do.
From Fairtrade organic cotton to ZQ-certified merino,
sustainable choices for designers have come on leaps and
bounds since we started 11 years ago and it’s a designer’s
responsibility to ensure products are created sustainably,
ethically and ideally with a closed-loop life cycle.
What’s next?
We are excited to be introducing our first line of sustainable
swimwear. The collection is made from regenerated nylon,
which consists of pre- and post-consumer nylon waste material
including fishing nets, discarded carpets, plastic components
and fabrics scraps. To date, our swimwear has recycled
120kg of discarded nylon to make durable, breathable and
environmentally friendly swimwear.
To top things off, we’ll also be expanding into Europe. I spend
half my time in London, where we have set up a sales office
Dressing for physical activity can be more strenuous than participating in it, am I right?
Thou shall not wear my new
Thou shall not tolerate
When it comes to your gym
SWIM
Take the plunge and invest in your most
stylish togs yet.
We hate to break it to you ladies, but
the skimpy leopard-print bikini that
looks great at the pool bar, is highly
impractical and inappropriate for
any kind of physical activity, yes even
volleyball, actually, especially volleyball.
So to ensure your day at the beach
goes swimmingly, purchase your
next swimsuit from a practical yet
stylish brand such as Cynthia Rowley
(cynthiarowley.com). We’re all aware of
the harm that the sun’s powerful rays
can cause, and at long last we’ve been
gifted with a swimsuit offering that
combines SPF 50+, longer sleeves and
the most wonderful prints. In swimwear
like this, you’re safe from the wrath
of unruly waves that once would’ve
made a mockery out of your unsecure
swimwear. So, leave your itsy bitsy
teenie weenie bikinis at home because
it’s time to suit up.
The
ABCs
OF ESSENTIAL INVESTMENT
PIECES FOR MEN
More must-haves for the fashionconscious
male…
Words Ella James
N
IS FOR NECKTIE
Neckties are arguably the most essential menswear
accessory. Whether for work, dinner, or weddings and
so forth, a rack of quality neckties is an absolute must
for any respectable gentleman. The thing that will set
your personal tie collection apart from the rest is variety.
A range of textures, colours, patterns and widths will
ensure you’ve got an enviable tie to hand for any given
occasion. So make like Jason Statham and Alexander
Skarsgard and get tying.
M
IS FOR MOCCASINS
Moccasins look dapper when worn with cropped chinos
and a cotton shirt or statement jumper. This style of
footwear is perfect for quickly kicking off before a walk on
the beach, but don’t don your moccasins when it’s damp
out. Whilst they’re totally stylish, made for the elements
they are not. Colour-wise, the world is your oyster as these
shoes look suave in any shade, with our favourite shoe
designers expanding their palettes with each new season.
Styles that are embellished with tassels and studs may
take a little more confidence to pull off, but we certainly
think it’s worth the risk. Comfort and style, guaranteed.
(‘Gommino’ shoes available from store.tods.com)
O
IS FOR OVERCOAT
Don’t let the promise of warmer
months catch you off guard; an
overcoat is a year-round staple
that, more often than not, extends
well below the knee. While
shorter styles are available, to
achieve that elegant and most
iconic silhouette, we recommend
opting for the aforementioned
below the knee cut. After all,
the longer they are, the warmer
they’ll keep you. When it comes
to material, don’t settle for less
than 100% wool; it won’t absorb
water or too much cash from
your wallet. (‘Corneliani’ checked
tailored-fit wool overcoat available
HAVE IT ALL
with Haval
Motoring writer Ross Kiddie finds there is a lot more than
meets the eye in the Chinese-built Haval H2.
It’s not often a new brand and whole range of vehicles lands
in the new car market. But that’s what has happened over the
last couple of years, with Haval having been introduced to New
Zealand.
Well, strictly speaking, Haval is not new; it’s a subsidiary
company of the Chinese Great Wall conglomerate and the
nameplate is dedicated to sport utility vehicles only. That’s no
surprise as the global market has an insatiable appetite for SUVs
and China will capitalise on that demand.
Haval is represented here in three body styles, effectively
small to large. I’m due to pick up the largest soon – the H9 –
but this evaluation focuses on the baby of the series, the H2.
The Haval H2 is the car that will get you into the brand
without breaking the bank. It is available here in two
specifications, effectively low and high grade. The entry-level
model is listed at just $25,990, while an extra $2000 will buy
you leather trim (heated front seats, also electrically adjustable),
dual zone climate control, uprated audio and a few other
healthy specification items.
The test car was the upspec H2, and those features sit over
and above what could well be considered good specification in
the first instance. There’s a raft of inclusions even in the standard
model, such as keyless entry and ignition, sunroof, cruise control,
tyre pressure monitoring and Isofix child seat tethers. This last
feature is part of a substantial safety package that has earned
the H2 a five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program
rating. That being the case, you know Haval has been proactive
in building safety into its models.
Under the bonnet sits a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder
engine and it drives through a traditional six-speed automatic
gearbox. Haval claims 110kW (5600rpm) and 210Nm (2200-
4500rpm) power outputs, and if you look at the areas where
those figures are supplied you easily come to the conclusion
that the makers have put a lot of development work into the
driveline so that it works with a broad flow of energy.
It is also an engine that works sweetly. Well, that’s no surprise,
at 1497cc there’s not a lot of reciprocating mass so it works
quietly and with fluid turbo boost. There’s no lag, and the
engine management protocols work in harmony with the sixspeeder
so that gear changes are instant and structured so that
respectable acceleration can be gleaned. On that subject, the
H2 will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 10.5sec and will make
120km/h from 80km/h in 6.2sec.
There are three drive modes, all self explanatory – eco,
normal and snow. I chose normal mode for most of my
evaluation drive, however, if you are conscious about fuel use,
eco mode will dull throttle response.
Unlike its bigger stablemates, some of which have four-wheel-

STYLE | motoring 81
drive, the H2 is a front-wheel-drive model only, however,
I must make mention of the suspension engineering.
Full marks to Haval, the rear end of the H2 is a fully
independent system, offering suspension freedom and
promoting a high degree of both handling and in-cabin
comfort. The spring and damper rates are only mildly
firmed, but there is still just enough damping so that
gravitational forces are arrested when tricky corners are
encountered.
I took the test car on the loop using some of my
favourite high country roads and I was hugely impressed
with its road manners and civilised nature. It is quiet on
the highway and steers directly, there’s a lot of rubber
on the road through Korean-made Kumho tyres (235/55
x 18in), and feedback through the steering is decidedly
informative.
On my highway loop the engine ticks over at just
2000rpm at 100km/h and it uses fuel at the rate of
6.8-litres per 100km (42mpg), which is not too distant
from the norm for an engine of this size. My week-long
average of 10l/100km (28mpg) was a little on the high
side but worked well with Haval’s combined cycle claim
of 9l/100km (31mpg). Those figures aren’t outstanding
given the engine isn’t big, but I guess at around 1.5-tonne
there is a bit of weight to shift.
Nevertheless, the H2 is an impressive vehicle, it is easy
to drive and offers family-friendly ergonomics. All too
often sport utility vehicles are there to tempt, but many
families simply don’t have the cash to get into the perfect
car. That’s where Haval H2 fits the bill well – it is an
affordable, no-nonsense wagon.
CROUCHING JAGUAR,
HIDDEN DRAGON
I think I clipped a road cone when I drove out of Archibalds
in the new Jaguar E-Pace, but I can assure you, by the end of
this trial, I had it parking itself. Words Kate Preece
My knowledge of the Jaguar was limited, be it fourlegged
or four-wheeled. Thoughts of the marque
conjured images of stately sedans or curvy two-door
coupes, all in British racing green with wood detailing. Yet
the Jaguar E-Pace is an SUV, it’s modern and mine was
‘Firenze red’.
For town driving, it has everything you need. Those
already cruising around in late model cars will be familiar
with the vehicle-controlled elements that make the idea
of driverless cars a less futuristic reality. Adaptive Cruise
Control with Queue Assist sees the E-Pace slow down
to always maintain a safe distance between you and the
vehicle in front (even when you have it set to 100km/h),
Lane Keep Assist will correct your route if you drift while
on the motorway, and Driver Condition Monitor will let
you know when you need more coffee – or a break. But
Park Assist is something else.
The nine-speed automatic not only searches for and
locates a park, it will then turn the steering wheel to line
up with its final destination. Prompts leave it to you to
control acceleration, braking and gear changing, but you
soon realise how far we’ve come from the Flintstones, and
how much closer we’re getting to the Jetsons.
In this particularly upspec R-Dynamic SE P250 model,
the best place to be was on the open road. The fourcylinder
2-litre petrol engine promises 0-100km/h in
7 seconds, and, I tell you what, that’s no joke. The rate at
which the E-Pace leaped off the mark couldn’t help but
make a driver smile – like the proverbial cat that’s got
the cream.
The E-Pace hits the market to rival the smaller SUVs
available – think BMW X1 and Audi Q3. So, while there is
plenty of room for two car seats in the back, the children
don’t seem a world away. It’s compact, as it is designed to
be, yet with a panoramic glass roof, as in the test car, things
– including the family – are looking up.
With All Surface Progress Control enabling you to set
a constant speed through slippery surfaces, as well as a
specific rain/ice/snow mode (complementing comfort, eco
and dynamic), it’s clear this all-wheel drive Jaguar is not
afraid of the elements. As a driver, there’s extra peace of
mind thanks to the E-Pace’s SOS Emergency Call (a button
situated near the rear-view mirror). When pressed it will
connect you with emergency services, even when out of
cellphone range, and it will automatically make the call if
the airbags are deployed.
Despite that ‘E’, this is not Jaguar’s foray into the electric
vehicle market – the first all-electric I-Paces will be on
display here from January. Fingers crossed there’s the
opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of these
because, if the E-Pace is anything to go by, these new cats
might be crowned king of the jungle yet.
NORTH & SOUTH
Gillian Vine appraises the contrasting attractions
of Vietnam’s two main cities.

STYLE | travel 87
There are 95 million people in Vietnam and nearly all seem
to be on scooters aimed at me as I try to cross a street near
my Hanoi hotel.
Enlisting the helping of a friendly local, I make the heart-fluttering
journey to the Lotte skyscraper and pay about $15 to zip up to the
65th floor observation tower.
The view is spectacular, even though somewhat hazy as a result
of the high humidity, 31°C temperature and Hanoi’s location on
the Red River and its numerous tributaries.
After a meal of fried rice and shellfish soup, which cost less
than $6, I repeat the harrowing road crossing back to the five-star
Daewoo Hanoi, deciding the lake view from my seventh-floor room
is all I can cope with for now.
I next venture out on a small-group bus tour as a cunning way
to avoid being mowed over while exploring the city. I wasn’t entirely
confident about the side trip, a ride on a trishaw pedalled by a wiry
man who looked at least 70, but despite my initial nerves, I loved it.
A ‘must’ on every Hanoi tourist’s itinerary is the mausoleum of
Ho Chi Minh, ‘Uncle Ho’, the Communist leader who remains the
symbol of unification of northern and southern Vietnam, although
he died more than three years before the last American troops left.
No photos are allowed inside the tomb, guarded by goosestepping
military in pristine whites. To me, the embalmed body
doesn’t look real – the hair is very odd – but he draws the local
faithful, from schoolchildren to the aged.
Adjacent is the Buddhist temple, Chua Mot Cot, or One Pillar
Pagoda. Built more than 1000 years ago by a childless emperor,
it became an important fertility shrine after his wife conceived and
remains so to this day, although the original structure was destroyed
by the French in 1954 and the present building is a replica.
Not far away, some parts of the Temple of Literature
(Van Mieu) have also been replaced but the essence of Vietnam’s
first university, which dates back to 1076AD, remains, as do many
of the steles (stone slabs) that record the names of successful
students. Mounted on turtles, symbolising longevity, the steles
underscore the importance of education in Vietnam, a concept
which crumbled during the 67-year French occupation but was
reinstated by Ho Chi Minh.
Image: Gillian Vine
ABOVE FROM TOP: Dodging scooters on the street
is a part of everyday life in Vietnam; At Ho Chi Minh’s
mausoleum in Hanoi, you can view his embalmed body.
OPPOSITE: Han-Van Mieu, the Temple of Literature, was
Vietnam’s first university.

88 STYLE | travel Vietnam’s food is a
major attraction.
Typical transport
along the Mekong.
Image: Gillian Vine
The importance of Uncle Ho cannot be underestimated.
When Communist forces seized Saigon in 1975 they renamed
the city after him. Some 1100 kilometres (two hours by plane or
33 hours by train) separate the two cities and while, from the
air, they appear similar – sprawling and surprisingly green cities
on the caramel-coloured Mekong – on the ground there are
marked differences. Hanoi retains more French charm while
Ho Chi Minh immediately presents as more westernised. In the
south, the 1955-75 conflict is referred to as the Vietnam War
but in the north it is called the American War.
Moreover, many locals still call the southern capital Saigon.
You’ll still find French colonial buildings dotted around Ho Chi
Minh City too, like my elegant centre-city hotel that has kept
its 1930s name, Grand Hotel Saigon.
On a city tour, the Reunification Palace is most interesting for
the gates broken down in 1975, when the Communists charged
through, but the CIA building has nothing to remind me of the
famous evacuation pic of people clinging to chopper skids. At the
War Remnants Museum the number of American aircraft
is interesting, while seeing how prisoners were treated is chilling,
with the scariest exhibit the French guillotine, dragged around
the country to execute ‘traitors’ until 1969.
I’m happy to trade grue for calm at the Taoist Jade Emperor
(or Tortoise) Pagoda. I obey the sign ‘xin de giay dep noi day’
(literally ‘Please leave the footwear up’), although I curse that
I’m wearing laced sneakers, instead of sandals more easily
kicked off.
A friendly monk lets me take his photo and hopefully he blesses
me, as the next part of my journey involves crossing the river in a
low-slung boat with ratty cane chairs to sit on and no life jackets.
That seems safer than an even lower-slung canoe along a canal,
where I’m convinced crocodiles lurk. It’s the only time I’ve been
glad to learn a species is now rare.
Back on land, a sumptuous lunch reminds me why I’ve fallen in
love with Vietnam and leaves me wondering why I left it so long
to visit and how soon before I can return.

STYLE | travel 89
HALONG BAY
One of Vietnam’s top tourist attractions is Halong
Bay, 170km east of Hanoi. Famous for its breathtaking
limestone (karst) islets, it is best appreciated from the
water, in a modern junk or conventional vessel. Stay
overnight to indulge in leisurely kayaking and swimming,
then dine on fat Halong Bay oysters and sleep well before
rising to experience sunrise over the water, perhaps while
doing a little tai chi.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit some of the caves,
of which the most impressive is probably Hang Sung Sot,
a massive complex filled with stalactites (the ones that
drip downwards) and stalagmites. A guide pointed out
ones in the shape of Buddha and various deities, which
I duly admired but chose to ignore the one he called
‘Man in the morning’, a vast phallic symbol spotlit in pink.
Trinket-touting sellers are now rare. Two years ago,
as part of a push to reduce pollution, the government
decided to clean up Halong Bay, starting by moving out
the inhabitants of the floating villages, who travelled around
the bay selling souvenirs. The villages are now gone and
pollution issues considerably lessened, although Vietnam
is slow to catch on to the idea of giving up plastic bags.
TIPS FOR TRAVELLERS
BEST TIME TO VISIT: October to March, although rainfall can
still be high in Ho Chi Minh City in October. Temperatures
average mid to high 20s.
MONEY: Vietnam is largely a cash society but NZ dollars can
be difficult to change into dong ($1NZD =1500 dong approx.),
so take Australian or US notes, or simply use an ATM. Carry
only the money you need for the day, leaving the remainder,
with your passport, in the hotel safe.
CELLPHONE: Keep charged and learn the numbers for emergency
services (113 for police, 114 for fire and 115 to call an ambulance).
WATER: Drink only bottled water and use it to clean your teeth.
Carry water always, as well as wet wipes, tissues and hand sanitiser.
SHOPPING: Posh shops usually have fixed prices but in the markets,
bargaining is expected. Aim to pay no more than half the first price
the vendor quotes and above all, keep smiling as you bargain.

Meet the team
With a combined 120 years’ experience in the industry, House of Travel
High Street Lanes takes travel to the next level. Let us introduce you to
with superior knowledge in different aspects of travel.
– Europe
What’s hot for 2019 travel to Europe?
Cruising. Kiwis are just cottoning on
to the fact that cruising is a really great
value way to see Europe and there is no
packing/unpacking. The trick is to match
you with the right cruise and to work
your itinerary so that it flows beautifully.
Why is Europe your speciality?
I lived in Greece for a year and travelled
extensively through Europe. I love to
surprise my clients by giving them ideas
they would never have thought of. The
hidden gems of wisdom we can offer go
a long way. People are often surpried
by how much extra time on the ground
they gain, often at a lesser cost, by
booking through us.
Sarah Crowe
– Family travel
Why would we work with a travel agent
for our family adventure holiday?
We have access to many different
companies and work your holiday to fit
your budget. I recently sent a family to
Morocco and they had their own personal
guide who was a Berber, and they were
taken to places they never would have
gone as lone tourists.
Where was your most recent family
holiday? And your next?
I took our 10 and 11 year olds on a road
trip from San Francisco to San Diego.
Theme parks, horse-riding the Hollywood
Hills, walking the streets of San Fran, the
beach; we loved it all! Next trip could be
Borneo or Sri Lanka.
Alana Aldridge
– Asia
Why is Myanmar one of your
favourite countries to visit?
Myanmar is more untouched than a
lot of the other Asian destinations
and it is so diverse. My highlights were
watching the sunset over the temples
of Bagan and the floating villages of
Inle Lake.
What are the most popular Asian
destinations to travel to at the
moment?
Bali is our top seller, as it presents
such good value for money; Vietnam
has hidden treasures just off the
coast that offer luxury resort-type
experiences; and we are also seeing an
increase in travel to Japan.
TOURS
Tick off your bucket list with Terri Gledhill
of House of Travel High Street Lanes and
Albatross Tours.
Why travel with Albatross Tours?
“What I love most about these tours is that they’re designed with Kiwis
in mind. These escorted tours won’t have you packing up and moving on
every day. Instead, stay at specially selected character hotels for three to
five nights, and know there’s plenty of time to sightsee, get to know the
locals and genuinely explore a region – you will leave with a much clearer
understanding of the destination’s people, history and lifestyle. Often the
variety of excursions and activities will take you away from the bustling
tourist crowds too, all to deliver on the promise of a more authentic
experience. ‘My Time’ is key part of the schedule, which offers a unique
way of touring that really appeals to me.” – Terri
The best way to
travel to Europe
in 2019
Nicola Milne from House of Travel High Street Lanes tells us why
travelling to Europe with Singapore Premium Economy Class is the
way to go.
Premium Economy Class and Business Class travel is no longer
only for the rich and famous. I am finding that more and more
people are seeking comfort when travelling long distances.
Many people are spending more on getting to their destination
than the experience at the destination. It’s all about comfort...
especially when travelling 30 hours to the other side of the world!
With airlines such as Singapore Airlines, you can choose to
upgrade the whole trip, or simply one leg of the journey. It makes
a difference to realise you have this flexibility.
Never overlook Premium Economy Class. We often find seats
on special, and, if Economy is full, it’s possible to waitlist you on
Premium Economy Class special rates.
TIPS FOR EUROPE 2019
With Singapore Airlines set to launch their Premium
Economy Class service from Christchurch to Singapore,
just one-stop to Europe, on January 8, 2019, my best
piece of travel advice is: book early!
With Europe being such a popular destination for next
year, even if you are just thinking about going, it pays to
get in touch with us as early as you can. We are just an
email away.
DOS & DON’TS Down River
For a different sort of cruise experience, consider taking your travels to
the rivers that wind through some idyllic destinations.
DO
Do get to know the crew. Many have more than one duty,
and most will go the extra mile for you if you take the time
to ask about them.
Do make the most of the free shore excursions. Known
for being well planned and enjoyable, opt to tick these off
the list in the mornings and enjoy boat life in the afternoons.
Do mingle. After-dinner entertainment can include talent
from the latest port or that one person who thinks their
dulcet tones demand a microphone.
Do make the tips count. The bar gets crowded 5.30pm-
7pm, but tipping bar staff 10-20 Euro on the first day will
make sure they remember you. You’ll get the jump on
Hank the Yank ordering (dithering) on his stool and they
might even bring your order to you, in the comfort of your
window sofa!
DON’T
Don’t consider this as second-rate cruising. From the ships
to the food and beverage options, the standards of the
latest river cruises have risen to match those which cross the
oceans.
Don’t be late. It won’t be worth the dark glares and audible
grumbles from fellow passengers waiting to go on shore –
or, worse still, the big bill to get you back if you miss
your ride.
Don’t bother the captain. Getting the ship from A to
B safely is the captain’s prerogative, and, while this can
involve a change of plan if rivers are too high or too low,
it’s the Cruise Director who will be updating your itinerary.
Usually a good sort, the Cruise Director will provide extra
commentary on the move and history of the destinations
ahead.
Don’t fear the post-cruise bulge. Today’s menus are varied
and healthy – though the restraint still comes down to you!

FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Words Gaynor Stanley
W
ellness holidays have been one of the fastest
growing trends in travel in recent years and
there’s no sign of this waning any time soon.
Dutch travel giant Booking.com reports
the number of us planning to take health and
wellbeing trips this year almost doubled compared
to 2017 (from one in 10 to nearly one in five).
Many of us want to enhance our physical
fitness walking or hiking (56%), cycling (24%) or
immersing ourselves in water sports activities
(22%). Visiting a spa or receiving beauty
treatments was high on the agenda for 33% of
people, with a further 16% planning full body
detox, yoga or meditation retreats.
Essentially, spending money on travel
‘experiences’ makes us feel good. Unlike the
instant gratification we get from buying ‘things’,
which quickly fades, buying travel experiences
makes us happier in the long run.
Even just planning a trip is better for our mental
health than anticipating a material purchase (per
a Cornell University study from 2014) and there
is plenty of science supporting the old saying
‘travel broadens the mind’ that tracks how being
in a different environment stimulates new neural
pathways and positivity.
Experiential travel’s slower pace also gives us a
chance to pause and reflect on our life and return
home revitalised. So if you want to feel all sugar
and spice, may we suggest adding one of these
experiences to your bucket list.
Tramping with pampering
Australia’s Great Ocean Road is world famous
as a dramatic scenic drive, but those in the know
are enjoying it at a much slower pace these days
on the Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk. With just
a day pack to carry, you’ll hike 40km over four
days with an intimate group of 10 across wetlands,
wild beaches, rocky headlands and deep forested
valleys. Foot spas, local Victorian wines and
gourmet dining, king beds and crisp sheets beckon
in the architectural eco lodge you’ll retire to each
night. And once you reach the iconic Twelve
Apostles you’ll helicopter out to retrace your trail
from the air. Closer to home: walk from lodge to
lodge along the Queen Charlotte Track.
Cycling for softies
If the Tour de France whets your wanderlust each year, perhaps
it’s time to saddle-up. The world’s perennial favourite holiday
destination doesn’t just attract or cater to cycling’s elite. Guided
tour operators abound that make it almost a doddle for us
enthusiastic amateurs to pedal from one patisserie to the next.
With 2800km of cycle routes, the Loire Valley is recommended
as one of the premier crus for a two-wheeled holiday. There
are plenty of gentle paths for first-timers to meander and with
your very own support crew transporting your Louis Vuitton
to the night’s chateau, your basket need merely contend with
a baguette and some brie. Your road crew will eliminate any
headaches from punctures or vineyard visits that wreak havoc
on your balance too. Closer to home: opt for a guided tour of the
six-day Alps to Ocean Trail from Mount Cook to Oamaru.

Nourishing Bowls in Nelson
I never need an excuse to visit New Zealand’s sunniest
The inaugural Christchurch Food Chase has now been and
brunch of steamed greens and poached eggs piled on top of
a bed of mashed polenta at The Fermentist, and the chicken
dish at Boo Radley’s. The Hellenic burger at Welles Street
was a crowd pleaser, winning favourite dish overall.
First Impressions
Always on the hunt for Christchurch’s
happen upon Nimpression – a new café
The drinks menu was enough to reel me
in with a selection of matcha and turmeric
lunch, I couldn’t resist the cheeseburger
and shoestring fries. Nimpression also
serves breakfast staples like eggs Benedict
you’re after something a bit different, I suggest
trying the tomahawk steak. It’s perfect for
sharing alongside a few sides. We paired it with
roasted potatoes seasoned with rosemary,
KNOW YOUR
ORGANIC WINE
TERROIR
Organic wine consumption is on the rise and more than
10 per cent of New Zealand wineries now hold organic
certification. Gaynor Stanley spoke to Rebecca Reider
from Organic Winegrowers New Zealand to learn
more – and whether it’s true drinking organic wine
promises less intense hangovers.
Firstly, what qualifies a wine as organic?
Organic wines must only be made using only natural products;
no synthetic chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or herbicides are
permitted.
Why are more growers converting to organic?
Two main reasons, says Rebecca. Going organic appeals to
winegrowers who are really passionate about taking care of
their land. “Feed up the soils and the vines will eat a wellbalanced
meal, not Coca-Cola.” Winemakers also report that
when they convert to organic growing they achieve more
flavoursome grapes due to thicker skins, which is where flavour
and tannins come from. As well, consumer demand is growing,
both here and overseas. This sees 1700 hectares of vineyards
farmed organically today, compared to just 50 hectares in 2000.
Rebecca reports an “incredibly receptive” response to New
Zealand’s first Organic Wine Week in September too.
So the all-important terroir is even more vital. How do
growers avoid using chemicals and achieve healthy soils?
“Similarly to our own health, organic growers must be really
proactive to avoid having problems in the first place. They
focus on keeping the soil and vines healthy throughout the
seasons,” says Rebecca. Nurturing a diverse, rich community
of plants, soil, insects and microorganisms is vital. They do this
by carefully managing the amount of light and air than flows
through the vine canopy, using probiotics to stimulate beneficial
bacteria, rather than chemically eradicating bad bacteria after
it’s established, and by attracting beneficial insects. Many plant
buckwheat or phacelia flowers between grape rows to attract
insects that feed on pest caterpillars.
Does this result in wine that’s better for us?
Generally, organic wines will contain way less sulphur dioxide
– a common wine preservative often cited as the main culprit
for those shocking hangovers. To be certified organic a wine
must have less than 150mg/l of sulphites. Rebecca also points
out there’s no legal requirement in New Zealand for wine labels
to disclose what chemicals have been used in its production.
Choosing organic is a guarantee that only natural products have
been used.
Can you taste the difference?
If you have a highly sensitive palate, quite possibly. A
groundbreaking French study in February this year tested
professionals from the wine and culinary world in blind taste
pairings of organic and non-organic wines to see if they could
identify which contained the pesticides. Fifty-seven per cent
identified the wines containing pesticides and organic wines
were preferred 77% of the time.
New Zealand’s organic wine sector quantifiably punches
above its weight in accolades. Out of the 67 wines selected for
Air New Zealand’s Fine Wines of New Zealand 2018 list, 29.7%
were certified organic.
Some vineyards are also biodynamic, what does that mean?
On top of organic practices, biodynamic growers use special
plant, animal and mineral preparations, and work closely
with the rhythmic influences of the sun, moon and planets
to maximise their land’s natural potency. Only a handful of
New Zealand wineries, including Millton (pictured above) and
Felton Road, have gone to the extra expense of biodynamic
certification, though more follow biodynamic practices.
Style’s organic tipple picks:
Millton – pioneered NZ organic and biodynamic wine
TASTE
NORTH CANTERBURY
Wineries from across the region came to town for one
night of indulgence – and education. Attendees
gleefully sipped locally grown drops, chatted to the
winemakers and nibbled on Grizzly bread with decadent
Barrys Bay cheese. What better recipe for success.
the ‘denim and diamonds’ theme, attendees were treated to
a signature drink upon arrival and served delicious canapes
