It’s one of life’s basic necessities, yet not all children have access to new socks, shoes, pants, shirts and coats. A year ago, London City Schools created a resource to fill that void. Stocked with new clothes donated by the community, the Raider Rack is located in former classroom space at London Elementary. Last school year, 137 elementary, middle and high school students shopped at the Raider Rack. Already this school year, 79 students have visited the store. It strengthens their self worth, their outlook while walking the hallways, even their posture changes.” Janice Riggle, a teacher at the elementary school, has witnessed the positive impact, too. Melissa Canney, London City Schools’ student support specialist, spearheaded the project as one more way to set students up for success. Situations at home can make it difficult for families to provide clean or new clothes for their children. Teachers and staffers see some students in shoes that are falling apart or clothes that have seen better days. “The Raider Rack is meant to help families stretch their dollar and maybe give them a little relief,” Canney said. It also provides economic relief to teachers and other school staffers who reach into their own pockets to buy clothing and supplies for students in need. “I’m always asked, ‘What can I do to help?’ Here’s something that’s tangible,” Canney said, explaining that donations of new clothing, as well as money to buy clothing, are always welcome. She said the community has been very generous in supporting the endeavor. “When I asked the community to support this, I knew they would,” Canney said. Sneakers sizes Y-13 to Y-6 and Red Raider school spirit wear in all sizes are especially needed right now. Volunteers also are needed to organize donations, switch out stock to match the seasons, and help students shop. Checks payable to “London City Schools The Raider Rack” can Shirts, skirts, pants, coats and shoes line shelves and fill racks at the Raider Rack. Students can look through the items, all of which are donated by the community, and try them on in the dressing room at the back of the store. Melissa Canney, the store’s organizer, welcomes donations of new clothing and shoes for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Sneakers and London City School spirit wear are among the most needed items at this time. Additionally, volunteers are needed to organize donations and help students shop. The school’s tagline is “Inspire — Ignite — Impact,” and Community Impact Day provides students in grades K-12 with service opportunities to make a positive impact on others. This is the third consecutive year that students have taken part in the event. This year, some students were assigned to Edgewater Place Assisted Living in Plain City to sing, work on an art project, and assist with outdoor clean-up. Other elementary students bagged meals at Sufficient Grace in West Jefferson. Junior high students were divided between the Country Closet in Plain City and HELP House in London to sort donations. High schoolers worked with Plain City Parks and Recreation to weed flowerbeds, plant mums, and clean the youth building at Pastime Park. They also helped to organize and paint at Daily Needs Assistance in Plain City and visited with and sang to residents at Bluebird Retirement Community in London. “I’m amazed at the excitement that serving on a Friday afternoon can generate among students, staff and the organizations we serve alongside,” said Brice Kauffman, school administrator. “We have already been asked if we would consider a second Impact Day in the spring. It is something I’d like to talk more about with our school board and faculty. “The feedback we get from staff, students and our community surpasses my expectations every year,” he continued. “The Shekinah Christian School board and I believe that it is important for us to be connected to our community. We do care about what happens to those in Plain City and London and beyond.” The Community Impact Day experience embodies Shekinah’s mission and growing desire to interact with and make a positive impact on the community. According to Audrey Maust, an elementary teacher at Shekinah, “It was really good. Students gravitated towards the senior citizens. The kids went prepared [to Edgewater Place Assisted Living] with questions and did a great job cleaning.” She said that when one senior citizen was asked how they were doing, the individual responded, “It was going bad until you guys came.” Shekinah Christian School is located in Plain City. Shekinah Christian School high-schoolers tend to flowerbeds and plant mums at Plain City’s Pastime Park. VETERANS Continued from page 1 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6. Plain City Plain City American Legion Post 248 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Darby Post 3268 will host a memorial program at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 12 in the gymnasium at Plain City Elementary, 580 S. Chillicothe St., Plain City. Special parking will be available to those who attend. The program is open to the public. M/Sgt. Jeffrey K. Lucas, 57, will serve as the guest speaker. Lucas enlisted in the military while in high school in 1979 at the 160th Air Refueling Group at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base. He initially served as a computer operator using a Honeywell computer and punch cards. Through the National Guard’s tuition reimbursement program, Lucas graduated from The Ohio State University with a dual major in computer science and accounting. Upon graduation, he worked at Ernst & Whinney, an international accounting firm, as a certified public accountant on their audit staff. Lucas left Ernst & Whinney to start his own accounting firm and enrolled at Capital University Law School in 1996 to obtain his law degree. Upon graduating from Capital University in 2000, he started a law firm. In 2006, he reenlisted in the Air National Guard. For additional information, contact Bernie Vance at (614) 570- 2962. West Jefferson Norwood Elementary, 899 Norwood Dr., West Jefferson will honor veterans with a ceremony at the school flagpole at 9:45 a.m. Nov. 12. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will lead the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Third- through fifth-grade students will sing “The Star Spangled Banner.” Fifthgraders will share their essays on “What America Means To Me.” Guest speakers are Brig. Gen. Maria Kelly and Lt. Col. Mitchell Gargac. Representatives from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7005 and American Legion Post 201 will participate in the ceremony. The West Jefferson color guard will perform a 21-gun salute. A performance of “Taps” will bring the ceremony to a close. The public is welcome to attend.
