12 Tuesday November 6 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Austin goes from the Halswell Hornets to Canada Wolverines HALSWELL Hornets’ Brad Austin is set to become the first New Zealand-based league player to be selected for the Canada Wolverines later this month. Austin, 27, has been selected for the forthcoming Americas Championship, which will also act as a qualifier for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England. The University of North Florida, Jacksonville, will host two doubleheader rounds on November 13 and 17. Austin’s selection comes about thanks to a conversation with his grandmother about her father, who died during World War 2 while on duty with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. “To be given the opportunity to represent Canada in the World Cup qualifiers is an absolute privilege,” said Austin to the website Total Rugby Brad Austin League. “My nana, who was born in Winnipeg, was excited to hear the news of my selection, as were family members I still have living over there and in Vancouver.” Austin, initially played for the Halswell Hornets, South Island Scorpions, Canterbury Bulls and the Canterbury Maori team, before moving to Australia and joining Wests Devils and winning a championship with them in the Illawarra league. Austin is still a member of the Hornets’ premier squad and his dad, Lance, is still an active member at the club. “I believe we have a great chance to make history by qualifying for the Rugby League World Cup, and I will do everything possible to help achieve this goal for my teammates, my family and for Canada,” Austin said. Cobham beat Canterbury Combined 8-3, Southland Combined 7-6, Balmacewen Intermediate 7-2, James Hargest College 3-2 and Casebrook Intermediate 8-5 on their way to the title. Cobham won five of their six games and reversed the Canterbury championships result in which they were beaten by Christ the King. Teacher in charge of water polo Kate Dore said it was Cobham’s first South Island title in six attempts. “Christ The King had been the benchmark all season, so for us to draw with them in the round-robin game gave us a lot of confidence that we were able to use for the rest of the tournament,” she said. Dore said the team trained once a week at Christ’s College.
