PAGE 8 Wednesday November 7 2018 BAY HARBOUR Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi News Local News Now Lucky petrel released at Godley Head Fire rages, homes at risk • By Matt Salmons A NORTHERN giant petrel rescued on Sumner Beach last week was released at Godley Head on Sunday. The aggressive scavengers, also known as stinkpots, pāngurunguru or sea vultures, spend most of their lives at sea. Normally they come ashore at the Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Chatham islands to breed. Annabel Black Sumner’s Annabel Black, who found the “beautiful bird”, said it was great to hear it had been released. “First of all, it’s cool it wasn’t hurt by another animal and that it’s been released.” The petrel refused to leave during an earlier attempt to release it on Wednesday. South Island Wildlife Hospital volunteer Karen Talbot said she and a vet had tried to release the bird above Lyttelton Harbour. “We went to let it go . . . he ran down the hill and then just sat.” Ms Talbot said the vet then had to climb down and retrieve the 5kg bird. Wildlife hospital volunteers spent the next four days feeding fish to the bird and allowing it rest as it had suspected minor bruising on its leg. Ms Talbot said high winds may have blown the young bird off course, causing it to crash land in Sumner. In spite of the wind on Sunday, she said the release was a success. “He just sat and smelt the wind. PHOTO: ANNABEL BLACK But when we came back he was gone.” Ms Black said she was walking with a friend when they spotted the bird near the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club last Monday. “It looked like it had a sore leg. I actually thought it was an albatross at first . . . it was so big.” RESCUED: This northern giant petrel was rescued at Sumner Beach last week and nursed back to health by South Island Wildlife Hospital volunteers. The two women got a barrier from a nearby construction site to shield the distressed bird from dogs and other predators. Ms Black said she posted on the Sumner Community Facebook page to let people know to keep their dogs on a leash at the beach, while her friend contacted the Department of Conservation. Battle over future of Dark Star Ale House and Cafe site • By Matt Salmons DIAMOND Harbour’s Dark Star Ale House and Cafe will close in March, but unless a new operator takes over the lease its owners will have to remove all structures from the site. Statutory approval for the cafe building, the equivalent of a building and resource consent, was obtained by a previous owner through emergency earthquake legislation. That approval expired in April but was extended to June 2021. Owner Martin Richardson said he and wife Donna had planned to sell the business, but the limited time remaining on the site’s building approval had put potential buyers off. “Nobody in their right mind is going to take this on with a limited [time frame].” A city council spokeswoman said the lease was for the land only and all buildings were the property and responsibility of the leaseholder. “All of their property will need to be removed at the end of the lease.” The Richardsons are petitioning the city council to extend the site’s building approval beyond its June 2021 cut-off. The petition on change.org has more than 450 signatures and calls for the site’s statutory building approval to be extended “until such time as new services are built on the Godley House site.” The city council spokeswoman said there had not yet been a discussion with the community about the future of the Godley House site. “So it is not possible to comment on future plans at this time. This discussion is planned CLOSING: The Dark Star Ale House and Cafe will close in March, but its owners hope a petition will enable another operator to take their place. for the 2018/19 financial year.” The spokeswoman said the city council would “be happy to consider . . . an alternative operator” but no commitment could be given in the “absence of a specific proposal.” “Any new operator would need to commit to removing any buildings and structures at no cost to ratepayers at the end of the lease. “Other than the council approval and this commitment, there is no impediment to a new owner purchasing the business from the current tenants.” The Richardsons’ lease on the site expired in April and had since been renewed on a monthby-month basis. Mr Richardson said he did not want to sign another lease that would only last until 2021, as the work they would have to do on the site to get a new building consent was “beyond our pocket.” “I don’t see the point of carrying on,” he said.
