Age Concern now an
agent for mobility scheme

PEOPLE WITH mobility issues
will now be able to apply to
Age Concern Canterbury for
financial assistance to get around
the city.
Eligible people will be able to
access subsidised
door to
door transport,
which will help
to enhance
their community
participation.

the organisation was approved as
an agent for the Total Mobility
Scheme.
It is currently funded by Environment
Canterbury and the
government.
Mr Templeton said they are
“pretty excited” to be able to
deliver the service to older people
and that they get “multiple
calls every week” asking if they
provide the service.
“We are an obvious choice of
place for people to come and
get assessed to see if they are
eligible.”
“We will be able to help people
get out and about, to doctors
appointments and all those other
really needed things, but also
just to help people keep connected
within their communities,”
he said.

Free bus travel cost
more than $65,000

FREE TRAVEL on the buses for
one day cost more than $65,000.
The event on September
22 saw a 60 per cent boost in
passengers with an additional
15,672 trips on the network.
“The operational cost for
making the buses free across

This is based on the average
amount of revenue received for
Saturdays in the same period last
year,” Environment Canterbury
chief operating officer Nadeine
Dommisse said.
It cost $29,464 to promote
the campaign across Greater
Christchurch and Timaru, she
said.
Ms Dommisse said the
campaign was an “outstanding
success.”
“The free buses were provided
as a way of starting a conversation
about the future focus of
plans for transport in the region
and gave us the opportunity to
reach a wide range of people.”
The event coincided with the
release of ECan’s Regional Public
Transport Plan and was aimed
at gathering feedback responses.
