Lane changes
for Main
South Rd
• By Anan Zaki
MOTORISTS TRAVELLING on
Main South and Springs Rds will
see some changes this week.
All traffic on Main South Rd
was switched to the newly-laid
northbound lanes between
Hoskyns and Robinsons Rd yesterday.
New Zealand Transport Agency
said the changes were done in
stages, city bound traffic first, followed
by southbound traffic.
Meanwhile, motorists on
Springs Rd, near the Halswell
Junction Rd roundabout will have
to use a temporary diversion road.
A U-turn facility has been built
to maintain access to businesses in
the area.
NZTA previously announced
that a lane switch on Main South
Rd would be done in August but
that was delayed due to additional
work.
Contractors built the final
pavement under bridges, which removed
the need for an additional
traffic switch in the future, NZTA
said.
The changes are part of the
ongoing construction of the $195
million Christchurch Southern
Motorway stage two.
Tributes flow for charity boxer
•From page 1
“On behalf of the entire Fight
for Christchurch community, we
extend our sincere condolences
to Kain’s family, friends and
workmates. Our thoughts are
naturally also with Kain’s opponent
during this incredibly
difficult time.”
Mr Mitchell said he has spoken
to Mr Parsons’ opponent,
former Canterbury and Tasman
Makos half-back Steve Alfeld
and his coach.
“They’re completely traumatised.”
New Zealand Professional
Boxing Association president
Pat Leonard said “everyone is in
shock.”
“We are very, very sorry to
hear about it and we send our
utmost condolences to Kain’s
family.”
“This is the first incident in
our national association’s history
where a fighter has suffered a
critical injury in the ring.
But he said the association did
not find fault with the processes
that Fight for Christchurch follows.
Emergency services were
called to the event shortly after
11pm and Mr Parsons was taken
to hospital in a critical condition.
Not wearing headgear was optional
in line with New Zealand
Professional Boxing Association
policy.
The incident prompted calls
for changes in the boxing community
and a review is under
way into the fight.
Long-time friend of Mr Parsons,
Darren Jenkinson, who set
up the Givealittle page, said on
Tuesday friends and family had
been at his bedside throughout.
“He’s a great friend and is always
the first person there when
anyone needs help.”
However, he declined to speak
to The Star yesterday out of respect
for Mr Parsons’ family.
Mr Parsons, played for
the Sumner Sharks social
rugby team. He was nick-named
Dingo.
Tributes to Mr Parsons have
been flowing though the Sharks
in very high regards by the club.
“He’s been a member of the
Sharks team for a number of
guy.”
