The Star 7 News Local News Now Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Thursday November 8 2018 Cars still rule the city commute Fire rages, homes at risk LESS THAN half of residents find travelling by car easy in the city and are happy with the state of roads and foothpaths. The Life is Christchurch Transport Survey shows 45 per cent of people find travelling by car easy in the city, which is an 11 per cent improvement on last year. While 43 per cent are happy with the roads and about 33 per cent are happy with the footpaths. The survey – Karleen Edwards commissioned by city council – sought 3000 views on the ease of travelling around the city, safety, and the modes used. Seventeen per cent use their car less than 12 months ago, 14 per cent are more likely to cycle and 16 per cent are more likely to walk. Public transport use is also up, with 11 per cent saying they use the bus more often than a year ago. Cyclists have reported a significant improvement, with 63 per cent saying it is easy to travel by bike, up nine per cent on 2017. A third feel safe when cycling, up 11 per cent on the previous year. More people feel safer on public transport and while waiting for a bus. Pedestrians are also happier, with 74 per cent feeling safe, up five per cent on 2017. Walking tops the satisfaction poll, with 76 per cent finding that easy in the city and about half feeling safe. About a third are satisfied with the city’s footpaths and pedestrian areas. However, about 60 per cent of respondents are unhappy with Christchurch’s roads, citing potholes, surface problems and ongoing patch repairs. In general, while cars still rule the road, people are finding it easier to use other transport modes. City council chief executive Karleen Edwards said the survey shows residents’ views on transport are changing, with more people open to public transport, cycling, walking and sharing urban space. She said the results are encouraging because they show that people are starting to see the benefits of the transport changes that have been made. But there were challenges with the condition of some of roads, Dr Edwards added. GETTING AROUND: While cars are still the preferred mode of transport, more people are using buses, cycling and walking around the city.
