Judging
David
Baldacci
by Jonathan Moore
One of America’s most successful writers is David
Baldacci, who has published 35 novels for adults.
Incredibly, every one of them has been a worldwide
bestseller.
Indeed, his novels have
been translated into more
than 45 languages and
130 mln of them have
been sold in over 80 countries.
Plus, he has published
six novels for younger readers.
Childhood
Passion, Maternal
Inspiration
Even in his childhood,
David was always writing.
His inspiration came from
his mother Joyce Rose, who
gave him a notebook. When
David publicly expressed his
gratitude to her for being
the spark which ignited his
literary career, she
confessed that she had
given him this notebook to
keep him quiet.
Virginian Born,
Virginian Bred
David Baldacci was
born on 5 August 1960 in
Richmond, Virginia State,
where he also grew up.
As his surname suggests,
his ancestors emigrated
to America from Italy.
Nonetheless, he obviously
feels a strong bond with his
home state: even today he
lives with his wife Michelle
in Virginia.
A Legal Expert
Having graduated from
Virginia Commonwealth
University with a B.A. in
political science, he went on to
gain a J.D. (Juris Doctor) from
the University of Virginia
School of Law. He spent
nine years practising law
in Washington D.C., which
inspired some of his works.
The Best of
Baldacci
It is impossible to cover all
of David Baldacci’s works in
one article. However, in The
Telegraph, the man himself
selects five titles as the best
of his books.
Absolute Power (1996)
Absolute Power was
Baldacci’s debut novel, which
he still calls his favourite. In
this 500-page sizzler, the central
figure is the US President
– an insane, sociopathic villain.
The scene is set when a
cat burglar is trapped inside
the bedroom of one of the
world’s richest men. The
burglar sees Secret Service
agents kill the billionaire’s
wife as she tries to resist the
President’s advances. The burglar
begins to run for his life,
as he becomes a target for the
Secret Service. At the same
time, corporate lawyer Jack
Graham becomes embroiled
in the case, as this burglar
turns out to be the father of his
ex-fiancée, a prosecutor from
Virginia. The plot progresses
from one intriguing storyline
to the next, but one of the
key elements is the burglar’s
burning desire to end the evil
President’s reign of terror.
