People and Lifestyle
Thanks to the acronym
NEWS it is easier to remember
the four cardinal directions,
or points of the compass.
N - north
E - east
W - west
S - south
If you struggle to remember
what the difference
between “affect” and “effect”
is, the same technique can be
useful. Just use the acronym
RAVEN and remember the
following pattern:
Remember
Affect
=
Verb
Effect
=
Noun
Psychology students may
also have some difficulties
mastering The Big Five
Personality traits model, that
consists of five factors: conscientiousness,agreeableness,
neuroticism, openness, extraversion.
If you use the acronym
CANOE or OCEAN it
is much easier to remember
them.
Storytelling
Another great way to
recall information on any
subject is creating stories,
where each word or idea you
have to remember triggers
the next piece of information
you need to recall. The
more bizarre and humorous
the story and characters, the
better for our memory. If you
had to remember the words
glass, coffee table, mouse,
butter, and camera, you could
create a chain of events that
had a glass falling off a coffee
table, onto a mouse which was
standing on a pat of butter and
you took a picture of it with
a camera. Although it may
sound quite weird, it is highly
recommended to create funny,
unexpected stories as these
tend to be easier to remember.
Association and
Visualisation
This technique links new
information with old information
stored in your long-term
memory. You can also associate
facts with images, which
helps to make the information
meaningful and aids in the
organisation and structure
of the material. For example,
if the plane that we need to
catch takes off at 2 p.m., we
can imagine the plane in our
mind, and notice that it has 2
wings. Thanks to this, we can
associate the two wings with 2
p.m. and remember the takeoff
time long after it has faded
from our short-term memory.
While learning a foreign
language, this mnemonic
device is crucial as well. For
instance, if you have a new
word like pelvis, you can
imagine Elvis Presley moving
his pelvis. Just add the letter
p at the beginning and you
will never forget pelvis, which
means the curved group
of bones at the level of your
hips. Try to always visualise
new words and remember them
in context. For example: if
your new word is “impolite”,
you may write something like “the
tall, impolite man”, which
will help you to remember
that “impolite” is an adjective
and that it describes
people. Don’t learn isolated
vocabulary, because you will
not know how to use it in the
future.
Another way of association
and visualisation can be
applied in learning prepositions,
which can be confusing
or even nightmarish for some
students.
• In winter – just notice in
inside winter
This refers to all the seasons,
so thanks to this
rule, you will never forget
which preposition should
be used.
• On Monday – just notice
on inside Monday
This refers to all the days
of the week, so again, you
can easily remember the
right preposition.
Mind Maps
This is a great technique
for those who love to draw.
A mind map is a hierarchical
diagram used to visually
organise information
and show the relationships
raven | cuervo
to master sth | dominar,
controlar
trait | rasgo, característica
conscientiousness | aquí:
responsabilidad
agreeableness | amabilidad
to trigger sth | desencadenar
bizarre | extraño
character | personaje
pat | porción, un poco de
weird | raro
to aid | ayudar
to take off | despegar
to fade | desaparecer,
desvanecerse
short-term | de corto plazo
crucial //ˈkruːʃəl/ | esencial
hip | cadera
impolite | maleducado
nightmarish /ˈnaɪtmeərɪʃ/ |
catastrófico, horrible
GREAT WAY
TO RECALL
INFORMATION
ON ANY
