If you plan on going driving in a foreign
country, you’ll likely need to pay the
petrol station a visit once or twice. To
make a trip to the pump as pain-free as
possible, don’t be idle. Review English
Matters’ list of common expressions to
say at the petrol station.
Station
Things at the Station
• Does your local petrol station have a vacuum cleaner?
• While I fill the tank, could you clean the windscreen
with a squeegee?
• Most stations have an air compressor to take care of
any underinflated tyres.
• Before activating the pump, make sure the nozzle is
completely inside your car’s petrol/gas tank.
• My car could use a carwash once we’re through with
this.
• You’ll need to pay at the convenience store before you
begin filling your tank.
• The exact amount of petrol you’ve pumped and the
price should be on the display next to your car.
