Pleasant
Point –
Built on
HosPitality
Well worth the time to make a visit is the scenic
township of PLEASANT POINT. Only 19kms west
of Timaru on SH8, this quaint country town has a
population of close to 1300 and is considered the
service centre for the surrounding farming district.
One of the main attractions is the Award winning
PLEASANT POINT MUSEUM & RAILWAY which
has the reputation of being the best of its kind in
New Zealand. When the Fairlie Branch Railway
Line closed in 1968, a group of enthusiasts
established the Pleasant Point Railway and
Historical Society based on “a vision, a rusty
stream locomotive, a vandalized train station and
no money!”
Te Museum & Railway is run entirely by volunteers
and has become one of South Canterbury’s
premier attractions. The Museum hosts
wonderfully restored STEAM LOCOMTIVES and
the worlds’ only operational MODEL T FORD
RAILCAR built from 1925 original NZR plans.
Guys and gals alike will find
something at either Obsolete Iron
Motors or Frocks and Shocks when
traveling in Pleasant point. In need
of auto service? Stop by Obsolete
Iron Motors to update your WoF or in
need of service, repairs or restoration
of your car or motorbike? Look no
further.
While you wait or shop through
They only built 2 in 1925 for use down on 2 short
Southland branch lines & then they scrapped
them in 1931. This unique vehicle only holds 11
passengers and looks more like a bus on rail
wheels which was built by
the Museum’s volunteers from NZ Railways
original drawings and blueprints.
The museums working fleet also includes an
Ab699 from 1922 and a D16 from 1878, plus a
RM4. The RM4 rail car is the only one operating
in the Southern Hemisphere and there are a very
small number operating in UK and USA.
The society members have relaid the railway track
they operate on, which came from a number of
sources as the original was pulled up by Pacific
Scrap in 1970 and then melted down for other
uses.
On some weekends and public holidays, the
locomotives pull historic carriages along 2.5 kms
your primary destination of Frocks
and Shocks. This must stop location
offers a variety of items and is
a novelty location offering two
businesses in one. Stop by the
clothing store for Classic - Vintage -
Retro pieces as well as Accessories
and Jewellery. Loads of fun to have
two options at one location. Save
time – Save money!
When travelling or on a warm
summer’s day or anytime actually,
ice cream is a much welcomed treat.
destination spot for ice cream
some snack foods, a newspaper or
you can choose your favourite
flavour of their 19 ice creams choices.
Can’t decide, that’s easily fixed by
having a mix of flavours on one
branch line to Fairlie. The trains run to Keanes
Crossing where there is an old time MOVIE
THEATRE, PRINTING ROOM, MODEL RAILWAY,
a collection of RALIWAY ROLLING STOCK and
much more. Keanes Crossing has a meeting room
with kitchen facilities making it ideal for special
events and functions including wedding and
family photos within the museum environs.
Only a few kms away at Waitohi visitors can also
visit the Richard Pearse Monument, which marks
the spot where he became airborne. There are
