PEGASUS POST
MAIREHAU
HIGH SCHOOL
ENCOURAGING EXCELLENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY
Good Citizenship Award.
The Avon Shirley Masonic Lodge
Good Citizenship Award.
This is a highly prized award, presented to two of our senior students
that recognize outstanding service to the school.
The Lodge annually presents this Award to two students who, on recommendations of staff, best
exemplify the qualities of good citizenship. To be selected for the Citizenship Award a student
has consistently demonstrated the school values of Challenge, Achievement, Responsibility and
Empathy through actions which include service and leadership.
staff members co-lead our 2018 Senior Student Executive team. This often meant needing to
use tact and a positive attitude to instil in the team, as well as the feeling of being listened to,
valued and supported. Niko has organised a number of events and his given freely of his freely to
assist in the organisation of school music concerts and tours up and down the South Island. Niko
willingly mentors younger musicians and show younger students the skills needed to put on a
lighting and sound show.
In Niko’s own community he provides sound and lighting expertise at a number of events,
including weekly church services and the Parklands ‘Christmas in the Park’.
Niko will be remembered for his significant service to the school community. We wish Niko all the
best for his future success as he prepares for an engineering degree at University of Canterbury.
Our two award winners have decided that the generous gift of $500 from the Lodge will go to
FREESET, a global charity for women who have very limited employment opportunities.
Our first recipient of this prestigious
award is Georgia List:
Georgia is an exemplary role model
for other students needing learning
assistance, demonstrating that with
support, focus and determination,
anything and everything is possible.
Her subject strengths are Hauora
(Health) and Geography. Georgia has
been a role model for other students
in a number of class activities, notably
in performance and sport. She has
participated in our school productions
and due to her commitment and
reliability, has developed into a valued
and respected cast member. Her
outstanding results as a swimming
star for Special Olympics have been
regularly noted at our annual Colours
Awards Assembly.
Georgia demonstrates service in many
ways around the school including
regular set up of lunchtime activities for our students. She has taken on a Peer Support Leadership
role, demonstrating admirable empathy and tautoko (support) for Year 9 supported learning
students. Georgia also offers her help in the library and is forever keen to learn new skills. She is
focused and has grown in confidence by encouraging students to use our library for different
activities from study to board games. A consistent helper at Open Evening, Report Evening and
events which require students to represent the school with pride and respect.
Outside of school Georgia volunteers as a support person for disabled young people during the
holidays.
Georgia is a confident young woman who completes tasks with humility, without realising just
how much of an inspiration and role she is to others. We wish Georgia all the best in her future
endeavours as she prepares for an early childcare course at Vision College.
