The Network of the Ilam Stream, made up of residents wanting to revive the stream, are lobbying to improve its water flow. The stream runs above ground in the city at Avonhead Park and goes through suburban Avonhead and Ilam before joining the Avon River in Ilam gardens. The stream is sourced from springs and the Waimakariri river water race system but it is often dry for most of the year, residents say. Two years ago, the water flow has stopped on Colina St, Avonhead due to a leak. Network of the Ilam Stream treasurer Bill Carroll says fixing the leak is another step towards achieving the residents “dream” – to have a constant water flow through the Ilam Stream. Last week, the city council fixed the leak but have no plans to work on a permanent water flow. “We’ve been lobbying to get the leak fixed because the water doesn’t get to the end of the stream in the Ilam Gardens,” Mr Carroll said. The current springs and water race system is not enough to have a continuous flow, Mr Carroll said. He said if the residents’ wishes for the Ilam Stream come true, it would be more valued by locals. “[We hope] there will be public places where people can walk along it and enjoy it,” Mr Carroll said. The library, based in Burnside, marked the milestone with a family fun day last week. Library co-chairwoman Vicki Lynch said making sure all children had access to good quality toys was essential. “Having the toy library means every child has access to quality toys, regardless of whether their parents can afford to buy toys, and regardless of their background,” she said. She said hiring toys rather than buying them was a great way to preserve the environment. “The good thing about hiring toys is that it’s better for the environment because you’re not buying junky stuff and then throwing it out. Quite a lot of parents actually come to the library without their kids to get out toys, then they’ll go home and the next day the kids wake up and go: ‘Oh my gosh, look at these new toys’.” Ms Sim said the most popular toys were often not what people thought. “Last year our most popular toy, believe it or not, was a recycling truck. It was only in the library about two or three weeks of the year,” she said. She said her favourite part of working at the toy library was getting to “test” the new toys that came in. “I love being able to play with all the toys before anyone else gets them. NOR’WEST NEWS Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday November 20 2018 7 News Butcher up for ‘Olympic’ challenge A BURNSIDE man has once again been selected to represent New Zealand in an event known as the Olympics of Butchery. Jeremy Garth, who is the butchery manager at New World Ferry Road, was this week named among the seven butchers who will make up the New Zealand team at the 2020 World Butchers’ Challenge. It’s the second time he has made the cut for the team known as the ‘Sharp Blacks’, having taken part in this year’s WBC in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the Sharp Blacks placed second. “I’m still celebrating being selected again,” Mr Garth says. “Apart from the captain [Corey Winder, also of Christchurch] I’m the only one who got back in.” He and the other six Sharp Blacks will now start preparing for the next WBC, to be held in Sacramento, California, in September 2020. “Over the next two years we’ll meet regularly for training weekends, then return to each of our home butcheries to apply those techniques to what we do for our customers.” Mr Garth has been assigned a new team role too, switching from breaking down the raw carcasses to turning them into retail cuts. For shoppers of New World Ferry Road that will mean soon being able to buy cuts of meat that are indisputably ‘world class’. “Being able to talk to customers about the wide range of cuts they can get is one of the best parts of my job. Now I’m essentially going to be in training for 2020 every day, our shoppers can expect to see some good stuff.” Steve Anderson, chief executive of Foodstuffs South Island, says having a butcher of Mr Garth’s calibre on the Foodstuffs team shows the supermarket operator is “getting the right people.” “Because our stores are locally-owned and operated their butchery teams are more responsive to local shoppers’ tastes, and also more attractive to the best local talent – proof of which can be seen here,” says Mr Anderson. Indeed, Garth’s rise to the top of the butchery world is an inspiration to young schoolleavers. “My first job was as a cleaner in a butcher shop. Now I’m managing a very large city butchery serving hundreds of shoppers a day, and representing my country at what I do best.
