WWI’s end marked
On Sunday, November 11,
Armistice Day was remembered
and commemorated – 100 years
ago when the guns finally fell
silent and World War I (1914-
18) ended. This “Great War” had
a huge impact on our country,
as about 10 per cent of New
Zealand’s population enlisted to
fight, and of these 58 per cent
were killed or wounded.
Cashmere High School student
Emma Hartshaw was able to
visit the battlefields of France
earlier this year as a young New
Zealand ambassador, and she was
one of the official speakers at
Christchurch’s formal ceremony
on Armistice Day.
Emma and her fellow Head
Students for 2019 also laid
a wreath at the Bridge of
Remembrance archway as part of
the service.
