7.3 ACADEMIC BOARD <strong>REPORT</strong><br />

<strong>REPORT</strong> OF THE ACADEMIC BOARD TO THE COUNCIL OF <strong>ORBIT</strong> COLLEGE FOR THE YEAR ENDED<br />

31 DECEMBER <strong>2017</strong><br />

7.3.1 TERMS OF REFERENCE<br />

The Academic Board has been established as an independent Committee, in terms of section 25 of the Continuing Education and Training Act 2006. The<br />

Board has adopted formal Terms of Reference, which are regularly updated and approved by Council. The Board presents its report for the financial year<br />

ended 31 December <strong>2017</strong>.<br />

7.3.2 CONSTITUTION OF THE ACADEMIC BOARD AND ATTENDANCE<br />

The Board’s Terms of Reference requires that the Board consist of the following 22 members:<br />

- Principal<br />

- Deputy Principal Academic Programmes and Student Support Services<br />

- Vocational Programmes Manager<br />

- Occupational Programmes Manager<br />

- Student Support Manager<br />

- Council Members (2 external Council members)<br />

- SRC Members (2 members)<br />

- Campus Managers (Brits, Mankwe and Rustenburg Campuses)<br />

- Head of Department Artisan Development and Partnership (1 to represent all 3 Campuses)<br />

- NC(V) Engineering Lecturer Representatives (X3 [1 per Campus])<br />

- Report 191 Business and Utility Studies Lecturer Representatives (X3 [1 per Campus])<br />

- Occupational Programmes Lecturer Representatives (X3 [1 per Campus])<br />

The criteria to elect the 3 lecturer representatives are:<br />

i. Representatives can be elected from any Post Level (PL 1 to 3) – it therefore implies that there is no need for representatives for each level.<br />

ii. Representatives must be permanently appointed.<br />

iii. Representatives must have a proven success rate for programmes that they are teaching or have been teaching.<br />

iv. Representatives must have a thorough understanding of the programme (NC(V)/Report 191/ Occupational Programmes) which they will be<br />

representing.<br />

v. Members of Academic Board do not represent any constituents; they are not stakeholders who are representing the mandates of the constituents<br />

they come from.<br />
