Darfield High athlete
breaks 33-year-old record
• By Louis Day
A DARFIELD High School
student has broken a 33-year-old
Canterbury high jump record.
Jody McCarthy-Dempsey, 11,
jumped 1.48m – 1cm higher than
the previous grade 11 girls record
set by Kay Nelson in 1985.
It is the third Canterbury
record held by
Jody. She also
holds the year
7 girls discus
record with a
throw of 16.74m
and year 7 girls
shot put with a
throw of 7.7m.
Jody said
she enjoys all
athletic events,
except long
distance and was interested in
possibly becoming a decathlete in
the future.
Jody’s high jump coach Brian
Cowan said her application and
attitude is what sets her apart
from others.
“A lot of kids put limits on
themselves, and I think Jody, she
wasn’t at all awed by what she
was doing. She knew exactly what
she was doing, she knew she was
going for a record and she made
the call to put it above the record
herself.”
TRIPLE: Jody McCarthy-Dempsey breaking the Canterbury high
jump grade 11 girls record set by Kay Nelson in 1985.
Cowan has been coaching
high jump since 1981, and
coached Glenn Howard who
competed in the 2000 Olympics
in Sydney.
Howard still holds the New
Zealand men’s high jump record
of 2.3m, as well as records at the
under-20, under-19, under-18 and
under-17 levels.
Cowan sees similarities
between Jody and Howard.
“I guess they both had that
application and willingness to
listen.”
Cowan said the sky is the limit
for Jody and there is no reason
she could not achieve the same
feats as Howard.
“Everybody in my eyes has
that potential. However, people
like Jody and Glenn have the
application and ability to listen to
actually get there.”
