First week on the
job and baby takes
her first steps

VITTORIA HAS taken
her first independent steps.
And all five of them were
away from me.
I don’t mean that in
some metaphorical sense,
they were literally away
from me and she hasn’t
walked again . . . yet.
While we played in the
hall, my wife Laura called
her over and she turned
away from me and walked
the half metre over to her
mum.
Laura’s proud as punch
and I’m super-excited
about what this means for
my time as a stay-at-homedad.
However, I’m still
jealous that all five of her
steps so far have been away
from me. Dumb, huh?
Luckily, I did not have
time to spend moping –
November 13 was B-Day.
My first official stay-athome-dad
day.
It was like D-Day, except
without the guns, the
soldiers, the beach landing
or other adults.
I think I did really well,
but it showcased what I
think will be a hurdle for
me.
I’d had a couple of
training days over the
weekend as Laura went
out with friends and to
organise a few things
before starting back at
work.
On the Friday, I took
Vittoria for a walk, got a
slice of pizza and chased
some ducks.
All good stuff in lieu of
baby times at the library,
which would’ve been on if
it wasn’t Show Day.
However, the weather
last week put walks out
of the question and there
were still no free activities
on nearby.
It forced me to think of
something to do. Before I
could have just followed
Laura’s routine.
But that’s just it, it’s
Laura’s routine.
Now that I’m in charge
(in theory, Vittoria tends
to dispute that) on the
home front, organising
outings and thinking up
things to do is on me.

In stereotypical male
fashion, I decided on a
trip to get some bits to do
some repairs at home – fix
all Vittoria’s broken bibs
using hammered in snap
fasteners.
But I wonder if I’ll
manage to keep conjuring
ideas to keep us occupied
before I hit a wall of sorts
and spend every day
there’s no activity at home
in my pyjamas being hit in
the head with toys.
More to the point, I
hope those ideas can
include other grown-ups
so I can sneak in the odd
conversation that doesn’t
include the phrases “please
don’t cry” and “eat that” or
“the cat doesn’t like being
climbed on.”

Kid Challenge
at South New
Brighton on
Thursday. The
event, which
was run by Sport
Canterbury,
had an obstacle
course that
included wading
through a muddy
estuary, jumping
in water and being
hosed down by a
fire brigade.
