A Postcard from the Peak District
Back in 1951, the Peak District became
the first area to be designated a national
park. It covers a total of 1,438 square
kilometres, encompassing parts of
Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Staffordshire
and Cheshire.
With breathtaking views and fantastic
trails, visitors can enjoy walking,
cycling, horse riding, camping and
wildlife watching. There are four trails
over 34 miles of former railway lines and
they make fantastic recreational routes
through the stunning countryside.
The scenic valley of Dovedale is a favourite
beauty spot. Impressive limestone ravines
greet over a million visitors each year but
perhaps the most memorable part of a day
in Dovedale is the iconic stepping stones
which cross the River Dove. When you’re not
jumping from stone to stone, make sure you
look up into Thorpe Cloud. At 287 metres
high, the limestone hill offers hikers scenic
views over Derbyshire and Staffordshire
for those who make it to the top. For a
gentle, flat, family-friendly stroll stick to
the pathway along the River Dove which
will provide plenty of opportunities for
wildlife spotting.
The market town of Bakewell is at the heart
of the Peak District National Park. Mellow
stone buildings, an ancient arched bridge
and pretty courtyards can’t fail to charm,
and with a good selection of cafés, bistros,
pubs and restaurants, sampling some of
the famous Bakewell Pudding is a must!
Castleton is a pretty village at the head
of Hope Valley. The imposing remains of
Peveril Castle which was built in 1086
by William Peveril, son of William the
Conqueror, loom high over the village
and offer spectacular views from the top
of the hill. Below ground, the guided tours
of Peak Cavern and Speedwell Cavern
offer visitors an insight into the life of 18th
century lead miners. Speedwell Cavern
is a boat trip 450 metres under the hills
of the village arriving at the Bottomless
Pit! Peak Cavern has the largest natural
cave entrance in the UK and has an
amazing amphitheatre with a year-round
programme of events.
A Postcard from the Peak District
For staggering stalactite formations a visit
to Treak Cliff Cavern should be on the
agenda and the Blue John Cavern is
famous across the world for its unique and
large deposits of Blue John stone.
The majestic reservoirs of Upper Derwent
are a must for history buffs and nature
lovers. There are some great trails around
the reservoirs with picnic areas, large
wooden animal sculptures for added
interest for children and of course, stunning
views across the valley. The Derwent Dams
were used during the Second World War
by the RAF 617 Squadron to perfect the
‘bouncing bombs’ technique. There’s a
memorial museum in the west tower of the
dam which retells the Dambusters story.
With so much to see and do in the Peak
District, when it’s time for lunch or an
overnight stay, you’ll want a place which
welcomes muddy walking boots, where you
can kick back in front of a roaring fire and
enjoy good home-cooked food!
A great place to stay in Castleton is the
Innkeepers Lodge - The Castle. Dating
back to the 18th century, the inn oozes
rural charm and rustic character. The
seasonal menu is packed with hearty
dishes like Hunter’s chicken, steak pie and
slow-cooked lamb shank. Real ales and
fine wines nicely complement the menu
and when it’s time to retire for the night,
the en-suite guest rooms are warm and
welcoming and also great value.
If you decide to make the beautiful village of Eyam your Peak District base, The Miners Arms is
a popular pub and restaurant with bed and breakfast accommodation There are two great beer
gardens which are perfect for those summer time rambles when rewarding refreshments are all
part of the adventure.
20

A Postcard from the Peak District
For those who prefer a larger hotel with
additional leisure facilities, just outside
the Peak District National Park and close
to the market town of Chesterfield is
Ringwood Hall Hotel and Spa. This is a
splendid Georgian Grade II listed manor
house with feature and four-poster guest
rooms as well as quality double and single
rooms. The hotel is set in 29 acres of
formal gardens and grounds, which have
won awards for the last five years in the
Best Hotel Gardens category. All overnight
guests receive complimentary membership
to the Health and Fitness Club which has
an indoor pool, sauna and steam room as
well as a gym.
For more great places bordering the Peak
District National Park, consider the cities
of Derby, Sheffield and Manchester and
the market town of Macclesfield for an
overnight stay or a few days away.
Apartment Appeal!
Providing guests with all the space and facilities to work, cook, relax and
sleep, staying in an apartment is an attractive option. With fully equipped
kitchens you can enjoy the freedom to breakfast at leisure, dine in with
your own culinary creations or curtail the kitchen activities and opt for
an evening out sampling the local cuisine!
But it’s not just all about the food! Stay in an apartment and you will
never have to balance the laptop on the bed again! Embrace up to
30% more space than the average hotel guest room with separate
living space and know that your entertainment needs are catered for
with the latest movie streaming networks, music docking systems,
DVD players and private telephones.
Think you might miss out on local knowledge? Many apartments
have a 24-hour concierge service so whether you need to know
about transport links, what’s on or where to go, there’s someone to
pass on the wisdom!
Ideal for both business and leisure breaks, apartment stays can
be as short as a two-night break for family and friends or a much
longer period for colleagues working on a project away from home.
With many of the services of a hotel and the added comforts of home,
the appeal of serviced apartments in 2019 is certain to continue.
