The market town of Bakewell is at the heart
of the Peak District National Park. Mellow
stone buildings, an ancient arched bridge
and pretty courtyards can’t fail to charm,
and with a good selection of cafés, bistros,
pubs and restaurants, sampling some of
the famous Bakewell Pudding is a must!
Castleton is a pretty village at the head
of Hope Valley. The imposing remains of
Peveril Castle which was built in 1086
by William Peveril, son of William the
Conqueror, loom high over the village
and offer spectacular views from the top
of the hill. Below ground, the guided tours
of Peak Cavern and Speedwell Cavern
offer visitors an insight into the life of 18th
century lead miners. Speedwell Cavern
is a boat trip 450 metres under the hills
of the village arriving at the Bottomless
Pit! Peak Cavern has the largest natural
cave entrance in the UK and has an
amazing amphitheatre with a year-round
programme of events.
