PROJECTS Roofshield to the rescue of community village hall When the residents of Ecclesmachan in West Lothian had all but lost hope of restoring the roof of the historic local village hall due to a lack of funding, a solution was found in the form of Roofshield. The A. Proctor Group’s “Roofshield to the Rescue” promotion offered community halls and centres up and down the country the chance of up to £10,000 of support towards the restoration of a community roofing project The successful nomination was awarded to the Ecclesmachan & Threemiletown Village Hall. The original building was a single Victorian school with ancillary accommodation. The pitched roofs, which were in urgent need of repair, consisted of a timber hand cut joists and truss design, with sarking, and a slate roof finish. Slorach Wood Architects were commissioned to prepare plans and oversee all works which included removal of the existing roof slates down to the sarking boards, examination and replacement of sarking where required replacing all lead valleys and flashings, and application of the Roofshield membrane, and then re-slated. Roofshield has long been recognised as one of the highest performing roofing membrane solutions, providing a pitched roof underlay, which is both air and vapour permeable. Walter Wood, Director for Slorach Wood Architects comments: “Without the generous help of the A, Proctor Group the roofing works may not have been able to go ahead due to a lack of available funding. The restoration of the roof means that the community can once more benefit from a great local facility, which has become home for women’s groups, children’s nursary and health and fitness classes. Many vapour and air permaeable underlays use an airtight VP film layer to achieve their performance, whilst Roofshield’s patented SMS (Spunbond Meltdown Spunbound) structure allows high levels of airflow, in adition to the transport of moisture vapour, making the formation of condensation in the roof space virtually impossible. It has an extremely high degree of vapour permeability, as well as air permeability, so will still perform conditions in which air tight alternatives will not. www.proctorgroup.com Cover Styl’ helps spruce up a unique Lancashire leisure venue Aspectacular installation project by Lustalux Ltd has helped to enhance the interior of Preston’s unique brand new leisure venue, The Flower Bowl Entertainment Centre. Sleek and modern are now the words used to describe the centre’s walls and doors thanks to Lustalux Ltd, who looked to Architextural, part of the William Smith Group 1832, for the high-quality wrapping films needed for the refurb. Lustalux Ltd, which has offices in Preston, Manchester, London, Coventry and Falkirk, delivered a contemporary refurbishment to the centre, with little disruption to the client and its customers. Seeking an authentic, highquality wood grain effect at a low cost, Lustalux Ltd used Cover Styl’ B6 Brio Light Aragon on over 200 square metres of walls and doors to give the look and feel of natural material. “The customer was unable to get the desired colour and finish in a traditional laminate,” explained Richard Lancaster, managing director of Lustalux Ltd. “We suggested they checked out the colours and finishes available in the fantastic Cover Styl’ range, which met their demands.” As Cover Styl’ architectural finishes allow for hassle-free application, without noise, dust or mess, and are quickly cleaned thanks to a hygienic, wipeable external surface to prevent marking, the vinyl provided the perfect solution for the business. Gilbert-Ash Completes Extended Arnold House in Tech-City, London PROJECTS Award-winning UK construction, refurbishment and fit out contractor, Gilbert-Ash, completed the redevelopment of Arnold House in the fast-growing ‘Tech-City’ area of London. The former warehouse now contains a 75,000 sq.ft. stand-out office and retail space. The £15m project included a three-story extension reflecting the design of the existing building. It combined its current industrial impression with a high standard modern workplace environment to cater for the thriving technology and media businesses in South Shoreditch. Working closely with Buckley Gray Yeoman architects, the team at Gilbert-Ash transformed the sevenstory building to reveal collaborative open-plan spaces with exposed concrete columns and efficient floor plates. High-ceilings and significant natural light adds to the development to create a contemporary environment. The ground floor, encompassing retail outlets and a spacious reception area, includes a curtain wall glazing exterior and black steel cladding panels for the signage zone. The façade also incorporates brick cladding and brick slip panels over new external walls. An inverted roof with decking has created terrace spaces, with tenants able to enjoy views of the Shoreditch streetscape. Gerard Mullan, Gilbert-Ash Project Manager, commented, “The final internal and external Arnold House refurbishment works well in the surrounding modern Tech-City environment. The contemporary space has been carefully constructed to keep the industrial style of the building but with additional features you would expect in a productive, collaborative space. From the ground floor to the roof terrace and landscaped courtyard, we aimed to create a space that would meet the needs of today’s modern, flexible workforce. The building includes office space with retail units on the ground floor in a fantastic location, right in the heart of Tech City.” Located on the corner of Great Eastern Street and Holywell Lane, the new development is a BREAMM Very Good building with a WiredScore Gold certification. The building was completed and handed over on the 10th August.
