Theatre for babies
BABIES AND theatre are not
usually two things that are put
together.
In fact, any parent who has
taken a baby to a performance
knows it can be challenging at
best and a disaster at worst.
Turning that whole idea on
its head is Burwood’s Melanie
Luckman, Sumner’s Hannah
Wheeler and Strowan’s Amy
Straker.
The trio will perform their
show Up And Away, designed
especially for pre-walking
babies, in New Brighton and
Phillipstown.
The show will be staged
through the newly-launched
Cubbin Theatre Company.
The company aims to develop
genuine theatre for children
under the age of five.
Each performance will last
about 30-40min with an opportunity
for families to stay and
play at the end.
The show will also take place
in a carefully crafted tent.
“Our vision is of a world where
high-quality art is as integral to
early childhood as the
playground, and as accessible,”
Luckman said.
She said it has been great
working with the city council’s
enliven places project fund for
MAGICAL: Hannah Wheeler and Amy Straker performing their
show Up and Away, which is designed especially for
pre-walking babies.
this tour.
Luckman said with the funding’s
help it can offer the show
for $5 for a baby and adult
together.
The show is informed by
neuroscientific research and has
been developed in consultation
with a speech and a language
therapist through a series of
rehearsal workshops with babies.
Wheeler was working at LATT
Children’s Theatre and living in
South Korea when she saw her
first baby theatre performance.
“It was five years ago and what
I experienced has stuck with me
ever since. I am really excited
about bringing high quality,
respectful and intelligent theatre
to children in Christchurch,” she
said.
•Up and Away is on
Thursday and Friday at
the Phillipstown Hub, 39
Nursery Rd. Bookings can
