School principal Rose McInerney, who went for a swim in the dunk tank, said there was still more money to come. “We had two amazing cubby houses at the fair and because we couldn’t paint them at the fair because of the weather, they still have to be finished and auctioned off on Trade Me, so they will potentially bring in another $5000,” said Mrs McInerney. More than 2000 people attended the fair last Sunday and were treated to a wide variety of sideshows and activities, such as mini golf, dunk the teacher, mini jeep trucks and a horizontal bungy. Pupils opened the fair by performing kapa haka and singing choir songs. “Our (pupils) were incredible, I think they got about 4min of singing without rain and sung their little hearts out for another 20min in the rain.” Mrs McInerney said the money raised would go a long way in improving the experience of pupils at the school. “Some of it will go towards additional teaching resources to provide extra opportunity for our students and some of it is definitely going to go towards the outdoor areas and seating for our new school.” Mrs McInerney said the fair could have quite easily been a failure if it were not for the resilience of the community. “For our school community and the wider community to get behind the school fair and come along out in the wind and rain, I just think it speaks volumes about who they are.” SPLASH: Redcliffs School pupils celebrate after dunking their principal Rose McInerney in the dunk tank. SOUTHERN VIEW Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday December 4 2018 9 New equipment for sensory playground OBSOLETE equipment from throughout the city is getting a new lease of life in the children’s playground at Rawhiti Doman. The sensory playground is designed to give all children, especially those with special needs, the opportunity to explore senses. The playground was the brainchild of SmileDial New Zealand founder Kelly Dugan. Mr Dugan, who has a sevenyear-old daughter with cerebral palsy, came up with the idea. Some of the large plastic traffic sheep that used to feature on inner city pavements have been put out to pasture in the sensory garden along with one of the New Brighton tiny huts. An avid supporter of the playground is Citycare property supervisor Doug Peek, who is always on the lookout for items that can be recycled at the playground rather than sent to landfill. When it was time to decide if the hut should stay or be dismantled, Mr Peek suggested it be added to the garden. SmileDial receives no cool and colourful Government funding, only community support. “Without the backing of organisations like Citycare we simply wouldn’t exist,” Mr Dugan said. Halswell teen’s path ambulance career ST JOHN’S National Cadet of the Year is 17-year-old Dominic Anisy, who hopes to ultimately pursue a career with the ambulance service. Dominic (right) has been a youth member since 2006, starting as a penguin at the Opawa division before moving to Halswell, where he is currently a cadet leader. He graduated from St Thomas of Canterbury College this year. Dominic was also the South Island Region Cadet of the Year and competed for the national title alongside Virginia Konelio and Jeremy Johnston. Dominic formally took over the role as National Cadet of the Year from Cascade Price at an investiture ceremony earlier this month at the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral. Outside St John, Dominic is a talented graphic designer having won a national graphic design competition to design the logo of the new St John intranet. Dominic also hopes to pursue a career with St John’s frontline ambulance service or the police force in future. “I am really looking forward to my term as National Cadet of the Year. St John Community health services director Sarah Manley said Dominic will “play a big part in leading the St John youth programme’s 15-year strategy, launched last year in St John youth’s 90th year.” St John youth has about 7500 members, with 193 divisions across New Zealand. As part of his cadet duties, Dominic will lead the St John youth advisory panel, supported by Virginia Konelio and Jeremy Johnston. From Tuesday 25 December and Tuesday 1 January 2019 wheelie bins will be collected the day after their usual collection day.
