Bellbird snaps top photo prize
Fire rages, homes at risk
A “RARE and magical moment”
caught on camera saw a Hornby
teen win a photography award.
Zoe Evans, 15, won the 11 to
15 category for a close-up shot of
a Bellbird inside Auckland Zoo’s
aviary.
“When the Bellbird finally
realised I was there, it looked
straight at me with its beautiful
brown eyes and I took my final
shot. It was truly a rare and
magical moment,” she said.
Anna Babington’s heartbreaking
shot of a injured seal
by a boat propeller was second
place.
Max Eadie-Lilley won the
under-10 category with his
moody monochrome shot of a
school of fish in a Lake Taupo
dam.
Evans’ photo (top left) won the
11 to 15-year-old category in
Canterbury Museum’s youth
photography competition.
He took the photo, which he
titled Stuck, during a weekend
away with his family.
Dylan Fisher, 10, was runnerup
for his portrait of a Kea,
which judges said captured the
bird’s intelligence and famously
cheeky nature.
The competition titled
Amazing Animals attracted
more than 200 entries from
photographers aged 15 and under
throughout Canterbury.
The judges convened last week
to choose a winner and runnerup
from the two categories.
Canterbury Museum curator
natural history Cor Vink, who
was one of the competition’s
three judges, said the panel was
blown away by the quality of the
entries.
“We were just amazed by
the talent these young people
had. We recently hosted the
Natural History Museum’s
Wildlife Photographer of the Year
exhibition, and I honestly think
some of these shots would not
have looked out of place on the
walls of that exhibition.”
The winners won Prezzie Card
prizes and their photographs are
on display now in the museum’s
foyer.
Oaklands School Eco-Warriors
The Eco-Warriors are a group of
nine students who meet each
week to explore real life problems
in our community. We began in
Term 2 this year and have followed
a six step problem solving model
to reduce the amount of rubbish,
particularly plastic packaging, in
our school and community.
We submitted our project to
the Future Problem Solving
competition and were delighted
to find out at the end of Term
3 that we had qualified for the
National competition in the
junior division of the Community
Problem Solving area. Five
members of our group travelled
to Auckland over the weekend of
2 - 4 November to compete in the
National competition at Carey Park
in Henderson. We had to create a
display, have an interview about
our project and present to about
200 people on Saturday night. We
also submitted a scrapbook and
written report outlining all the work
the team had done over the three
terms.
We were so excited to be awarded
first place in our division.
Community problem solving
helps us to be better thinkers,
collaborators and communicators.
We look forward to continuing with
our project next year and our hope
for the future is to have a rubbish
free school and plastic free lunch
boxes.
