BeatRoute Magazine is a monthly arts and entertainment paper with a predominant focus on music – local, independent or otherwise. The paper started in June 2004 and continues to provide a healthy dose of perversity while exercising rock ‘n’ roll ethics. this ‘90s cult classic about a group<br />

of twenty somethings trying to cope<br />

with relationships, loneliness, and their<br />

individual neuroses in 1980s New York.<br />

The Biltmore Cabaret is channeling<br />

the movie, which stars Christina Ricci,<br />

Courtney Love, Janeane Garofalo,<br />

Dave Chapelle, and Paul Rudd, by<br />

transforming itself into an interactive<br />

space, with an eclectic music selection<br />

and even a polaroid photographer.<br />

Bring things like children’s books,<br />

diapers, art supplies, period products,<br />

bedding, and warm clothing to any of<br />

the Eastside Flea’s markets throughout<br />

the month of <strong>December</strong>. The items will<br />

be donated to those in need at the Ray-<br />

Cam Cooperative Centre and the Wish<br />

Drop-In Centre Society.<br />

<strong>December</strong> 6-8 at Strange Fellows<br />

Brewing<br />

Celebrate the holiday season’s favourite<br />

bad guy with this three day long,<br />

old world-inspired market. A huge<br />

and carefully curated assortment of<br />

talented local artists will set up shop,<br />

and also lead some workshops on the<br />

Saturday. Watch out for makers like<br />

Antler Ceramics and Frances Hahn.<br />

KEITHMAS IX<br />

<strong>December</strong> 15 at the Rickshaw<br />

Theatre<br />

It’s the most wonderful time of the<br />

year: Keith Richards’ birthday — oh<br />

yeah, and the holidays! Vancouver’s<br />

wildest Christmas tradition is back<br />

for another round of Jack. This year,<br />

bands like La Chinga, Rich Hope, Little<br />

Destroyer, and War Baby perform at<br />

the Rickshaw Theatre. And, as always,<br />

proceeds go to the Greater Vancouver<br />

Food Bank, for which the event has<br />

raised over $50,000 and counting.<br />

MAD VIBES<br />

<strong>December</strong> 21 at Fortune Sound Club<br />

Canadian comedians Mufaro R. Mbudzi<br />

and Tarisai Mbudzi will be filming their<br />

debut comedy special, Mad Vibes, at<br />

Fortune Sound Club this month. The<br />

Zimbabwe-born brothers, known for<br />

their sharp commentary on topics like<br />

cultural appropriation and high tuition<br />

fees, will film back to back half-hour<br />

sets at what promises to be both an<br />

exciting and hilarious night.<br />

<strong>December</strong> 11 at Faculty Brewing<br />

Consider it a belated Hanukkah<br />

present. The Jewish deli that had<br />

a short-but-so-sweet home in East<br />

Vancouver a couple years ago is back<br />

for one night only. Head over to Faculty<br />

Brewing on <strong>December</strong> 11 for that slow<br />

brined, smoked, hand cut, New York<br />

hot pastrami on rye your taste buds<br />

miss. Their beet-cured lox and labneh<br />

cheese bagel will be available too.<br />

PARTY4HEALTH<br />

<strong>December</strong> 31 at the Seabus and<br />

Waterfront Station<br />

Looking for some good, clean fun<br />

this New Year’s? Party4Health — an<br />

initiative with a purpose to show<br />

people how to live a healthy and happy<br />

life without substances — is hosting<br />

their second annual NYE party on the<br />

route from the Seabus at Lonsdale<br />

Quay across to Waterfront Station<br />

downtown. Enjoy the ride on your way<br />

to your destination or just go back and<br />

forth until midnight. Participants are<br />

asked to refrain from drug or alcohol<br />

consumption.<br />

SILENT NIGHT<br />

<strong>December</strong> 13 at 336 E 1st Avenue<br />

Queer ASL, a program that offers safe<br />

spaces for queer and transgender<br />

individuals to learn sign language, is<br />

holding its first annual art show and<br />

voice-off salon! Silent Night will include<br />

everything from holiday-themed works<br />

to pieces celebrating deaf culture. The<br />

art will also be available for purchase<br />

and the organizers have asked for<br />

attendees to turn off their voices when<br />

they enter the space for the evening.<br />

VSO’S HOME ALONE<br />

<strong>December</strong> 14, 15 at the Orpheum<br />

Theatre<br />

Celebrate the end of the Vancouver<br />

Symphony Orchestra’s milestone, 100th<br />

season, by listening to a live rendition of<br />

composer John Williams’ score of this<br />

holiday favourite. You’ll almost be able<br />

to see Kevin McCallister outsmarting<br />

those dim-witted wet bandits!<br />

WEIRDOS HOLIDAY MARKET<br />

<strong>December</strong> 8-9 at the Hall<br />

If you’re looking for wonderfully weird<br />

and strange gifts to give this season,<br />

you won’t want to miss this. Find<br />

everything from anatomical curiosities<br />

and taxidermy to jewelry and art. There<br />

will also be tarot card reading, live<br />

music performances, food vendors, and<br />
