Fizzy drink out, fruit and veges in
• By Julia Evans
IT COULD be a lot harder to
find ice cream, lollies, hot chips
and fizzy drinks at city council
events and facilities.
A new healthy food and drink
policy could begin being phased
in across city council events and
facilities, such as pools and cafes,
from April.
It was approved by the social,
community development and
housing committee yesterday
and will now be approved by the
city council.
The policy could affect recreation,
sport facilities and library,
events, city council leases and
sponsorships.
However, it will be a “transitionary”
process rather than a
“prescriptive” one and would
be complete by 2022, a report
said.
The proportion of healthy
options including fruit and
vegetables, milk and nuts, will be
increased. While unhealthy food
and drink will be either removed
entirely or reduced.
Sugary drinks will be “ultimately
eliminated” as part of the
policy.
The policy said a lot of people
consider council events and
facilities “special occasions” so
may be more inclined to want
POLICY: A new city council scheme could see unhealthy food phased out from facilities, such
as the QE II Sport and Recreation Centre.
less healthy foods – so most
would not be removed entirely.
Contracts at city council facilities
will have to be renegotiated
to take the policy into consideration.
“However, it is not considered
realistic to unduly constrain any
potential food and beverage provider
to completely exclude certain
food or beverage types (such
as white bread or ice-creams),”
the report said.
It would not apply to noncouncil
run events and would
have a “minor” impact on
revenue.
It will affect vending machines
most, which currently have 90
per cent unhealthy food and 80
per cent drinks.
