Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Dr. Kimberly Arakelian said the levy is 3.98 percent higher than that of 2017. The levy combines the 2017 Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 2.1 percent plus a 1.88 percent increase to account for potential new property that can be added to the tax rolls. Stephanie Roque, 13, said she has been a member of the Study Buddies program at Youth Services since she was in the third grade. Each week, volunteers in the Study Buddies program help elementary students with their homework after school. “It’s really fun,” Roque said. “I go after school two times a week and get lots of homework done.” Though she’s only 13, hearing unless the levy is 5 percent or higher than the previous year, it is common practice for District 27 to hold the hearing in keeping with its policy of transparency. Arkelian said she is monitoring “key issues” that could impact the tax levy in future years: state sources of revenue; the cost of pension obligations shifting to employers; and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. 2019-20 school calendar a replica of this year The board approved the 2019-20 school calendar for the district’s three schools — Hickory Point, Shabonee and Wood Oaks Junior High also at the meeting. Superintendent Dr. David Kroeze said the calendar is a replica of 2018-19 calendar and that major vacation breaks will coincide with those at Glenbrook North. School is scheduled to begin on Aug. 21 and continue through June 4, 2020. Attendance days total 187, including five emergency days. If the emergency days are used the last day of school will June 11. The winter break will begin Dec. 21 and school will resume Jan. 6, 2020; spring break will start March 21 and classes will resume March 30, 2020.
