THE NORTH SUBURBAN YMCA CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN OUR COMMUNITYWITH
STEVEN ELISCO
My family joined the NSYMCA at the very first openhouse held
after the building wascompleted in 1969. In those years the
original farmer still worked the land betweenour neighborhood and
the Y. Iremember walking throughthe farmer’s pumpkin patchand
crossing the original bridge overthe river to get to the Ywith our
AlaskanMalamute, Bambi, fordog obedience classes in the Y’s thenunfinished
lowerlevel.
My most fond memories were learninghow to play racquetball when
the racquets were likewooden tennis racquets with just ashorter
handle, and roller skatinginthe gym on the weekends. Children were
only allowedtouse the entrance facing Techny Road. It wasakid’s
paradise. We had our ownreception desk to the right and to the left,
in what is nowthe Kindergarten Club, wasour Youth Lounge. Iwas
fascinated by the twovery largemetalboxesthat had doors with
windows: microwaveovens, the first any of us had ever seen. We
lovedtobuy hamburgers from the frozenfood vending machine, just
to watch them cook. I’m sureyou could imagine agroup of young boys
all crowded aroundthe small windowtosee the “miracle” happen.
As an adult withmywifeDebbie, the miracle continued as we
watched our daughter Grace participate in ballet, art, and swim
classesand learn the importance of community. The NSYMCA has
always been an important part of my life--early on, learning the life
skillsofhealth, wellness and social awareness and now, participating
in planning the futureofthe Ysothatitistherefor the generations
to come.
