CANTERBURY IS expected to
get more police next year – but
where they will be stationed is yet
to be decided.
The new officers will be part of
a nationwide boost of 1800 police
officers over the next three years
as part of a $298 million increase
announced by the Government
in this year’s Budget.
Canterbury is set to receive 121
more officers.

be looked at next
year once the
numbers have
been finalised.

“We will be doing a bit of science
behind it, looking at where
is our peak demand, when is our
busiest times. Traditionally, we
haven’t been able to do that,” he
said.
However, no decisions will be
made until the middle of next
year. He said it is possible more
officers could be placed at both
the Hornby and New Brighton
police stations. But the 24-hour
stations – central, southern and
Papanui – may also get more
staff.

a police detective sergeant hopes
to grow up to be like Jacinda
Ardern.
In a video series celebrating
Suffrage 125, Canterbury
policemen have revealed what
gender equality and women’s
suffrage means to them.
A detective sergeant said
during parent-teacher interviews
with his daughter, he was told
she was similar to Ms Ardern,
who was once taught by the
teacher.
“My daughter went home
from that interview thinking ‘I
can be like that, I can reach the
top’. That probably wouldn’t of
happened decades ago, but now
she realises that the world has
opened up for her.”
24-hour response officers, which
hasn’t happened for many years,
said superintendent Todd. The
station is currently crewed
during the day by youth aid and
community officers.
“What we’ve got now is
having stations that are more
hubs.”
Male officers speak out
The policemen’s names
were withheld to protect their
families.
In the series, organised by
the Canterbury police Women’s
Advisory Network Group, 20
policemen were asked questions
about gender equality.
The videos have been posted
on the Canterbury police
Facebook page.
They include questions such as
“what does gender equality mean
to you and the women in your
life?”
And “how can you help be the
change in a gender equal world?”
Another officer talked about
how the world had changed for
women while reflecting on his
grandmother’s life.
“My grandmother came to
New Zealand in 1942,” he said.
