Plenty of value in a power nap<br />
JUST UNDER a month in to<br />
my stay-at-home-dad career<br />
and I have a new appreciation<br />
for two things – parenting fulltime<br />
is way more tiring than<br />
I thought and I need more<br />
hands.<br />
Mostly for Vittoria’s Saturday<br />
swimming lessons.<br />
She’s amazingly confident<br />
in the water and it’s awesome<br />
watching her confidence<br />
grow. Before I went full-time<br />
parent it was our main daddy/<br />
daughter time, so it’s special<br />
for us.<br />
However, as she’s got<br />
more mobile, showering<br />
and changing has become a<br />
challenge. Hence the need for<br />
more hands.<br />
If my wife Laura is free she’ll<br />
tag along to watch the wee<br />
mermaid in action. Having her<br />
there is a big help as she can<br />
dress Vittoria while I shower<br />
and change.<br />
On Saturday morning, I<br />
decided to let Laura sleep in<br />
after a busy work week. But<br />
boy, did I miss her at change<br />
time.<br />
Wee one was already<br />
yawning mid-way through<br />
so by the time we got to the<br />
showers she was grumpy-as<br />
and letting everyone know it.<br />
Poor lass was just ready for<br />
her bottle and a nap and here’s<br />
me washing her, drying her,<br />
dressing her and then trying to<br />
do the same for myself? What<br />
a monster.<br />
To save extending the<br />
meltdown, and bring her back<br />
to her smiling self, I just went<br />
home in my wet togs, wrapped<br />
in a towel.<br />
It might not seem like an<br />
embarrassing situation, but<br />
try it out while you’re halfnaked,<br />
soaking wet and in<br />
front of much fitter looking<br />
strangers.<br />
As for my fatigue levels, I<br />
was never one for a sneaky<br />
workplace nap and after work<br />
I used to stay up to make the<br />
most of my home time.<br />
Now I’ll often nap during the<br />
day and still be yawning for<br />
bed by 8pm.<br />
I used to wonder why Laura<br />
complained about being tired.<br />
I mean, looking after a baby on<br />
the cusp of toddlerhood can’t<br />

news. Right?<br />
After Saturday’s swimming<br />
lesson we went to one of<br />
Vittoria’s friend’s first birthday<br />
party. By the end of that, I<br />
actually took a power nap on<br />
the floor of the lounge.<br />
