14 Thursday December 20 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Te Kura Tuarua o Horomaka Hillmorton High School Inspiring academic excellence, leadership, and a love of learning The Star Students’ new pool skills put into action At Hillmorton High School we look for every opportunity to ensure our students are present and engaged through authentic learning opportunities. Throughout 2018 a group of Year 11-13 students worked to qualify as swimming coaches, earning themselves not only valuable qualifications but also 40 credits towards their NCEA Level 3. Towards the end of the year, these senior students then coached our Year 7 and 8 students, teaching them to swim with 10 sessions over two weeks; this is ako (learning from and with each other)! The seniors demonstrated huge care of the younger students; whanaungatanga (interconnectedness – positive relationships)! The seniors took no breaks between the half-hour Busy finish to year A Year 9 Big Day Out at Putaringamotu/Riccarton Bush, Electives, visits to Ara, and Year 10 Camp are just a few of the learning activities that have been on offer in the last few weeks. Celebrating diversity A large crowd gathered at the Pasifika Celebration evening which was held at school recently. Our Kapahaka also performed to a large crowd at the Hoon Hay Fiesta, which was a great evening. Hillmorton High School Dux, Micheal King, right, and Maddy Keogan, the winner of the Woolhouse Scholarship. Top achievers recognised Congratulations to all our Prize Winners in 2018! In particular, we congratulate our Dux, Micheal King. The 2018 winner of the Woolhouse Scholarship is Maddy Keogan. In the Middle School, the prize for Best All Round student in Year 7 & 8, the winner of our Manning Award, is Zoe Dryden. The top Year 10 student is Samantha Dryden. Samantha was also awarded the McCallum Shield; a prize that acknowledges some one who has shown a commitment to the school goals and values and leadership. We salute you all. Winner in ICAS comp Allan Taylor has come first in Digital Technologies in the New Zealand ICAS competition. Allan, pictured at right, travelled to Auckland to be presented with a medal for his achievement. He also gained a High Distinction in Science, and a Distinction in Mathematics. He first began entering ICAS competitions when at primary school. Thousands of students in both New Zealand and Australia enter the competitions each year in an effort to be awarded Credit, Participation, Distinction and High Distinction in a variety of subject areas. We salute his academic achievements. Sailor bound for champs Each weekend, William Begg – a middle school student – can be found on the water in his boat. We wish him all the best for the 2019 O’pen Bic World Championships to be held at Manly Sailing Club, Sydney, over the holidays. We look forward to hearing some great results. Babyhood quickly coming to an end FAR OUT, it’s already Christmas time and most of the activities and things to do around town for babies are finishing up for the year – at least all of the ones Vittoria and I attend. Luckily she’s ready to graduate to more toddler focused activities now, because like 2018, Vittoria’s babyhood is rapidly coming to an end. It’s sad and awesome at the same time watching her grow and become more her own person and slowly, slowly more independent. Last week she had her final baby sensory class, they even put out a wee graduation gown for photos. That she starts a new course called toddler sense next year certainly brings home the point.
