It has been a challenging year on many fronts. However, we have made real advances as well. If I look back on the year, the one thing that has really stood out in terms of the positive responses I’ve had from people of all ages would be the opening of our new central city library, which has proven already that it is much more than a library. Our city libraries are normally closed on public holidays, so when we asked if an exception could be made for Tūranga over show weekend, as part of our commitment to revitalising the central city and bringing people into town, all the stops were pulled out. A big thank you to council staff, who gave up a day off to come into work and make a difference to our city. Our Civic Awards ceremony held last week was another great occasion to honour the individuals and groups which have made a significant contribution to our city and district. I was reminded yet again about the incredible voluntary work that is done every day in our city and on the peninsula. Often we don’t even know who these local heroes are until they are Mayor Lianne Dalziel BIG YEAR: The opening of the new Turanga central library was a highlight of the year for Lianne Dalziel. nominated, because they are so humble. Concerns were raised as the poison pellets could have been easily found by dogs or children. The poison was found near the reserve’s dog park. City council community parks manager Al Hardy said it dispatched rangers immediately after a complaint was made to ensure public safety and notified police. He said the rabbit pellets were placed by a member of the public. “It was found that the poison was already removed, however extra ranger surveillance was put in place to make sure secondary poisoning did not occur,” he said. It was estimated the pellets had been in the park for about nine days. DEADLY: Concern has been raised about rabbit poison being placed in Bexley Reserve without any signage to warn the public. Under the city council’s parks and reserves bylaw, it is an enforceable offence if a person introduces a substance in a reserve that may be injurious to animal or plant life without written permission from an authorised officer. That may be monetary or imprisonment. In the past year, the city council has received five complaints of poison in public parks. Nearby resident Paula Bartlett-Pak said it was concerned the rabbit poison had been randomly placed in the reserve by a member of the public. She said has been tempted to take her dog elsewhere. “If I ended up having to pay heaps of money because my dog ate poison or my dog died because he got poisoned I would be out for revenge,” she said.
