Simple pleasures?
I’ve spoken before about the development of
technology without first finding a need for it,
but what about the evolution of established
systems?
Sometimes the end result of your best intentions ends up
with an alternative future than you had hoped for. Anyone
who has thought that growing a moustache would improve
their chances of love will probably have more graphic experience
of this than anyone else. But the choice to grow a soupstrainer is
a decision that is easy to remedy, one quick shave and it’s all
gone, except for those photos on Facebook and the lasting
memories of the giggles in the pub.
Over the last few years some developers have been working
on systems that are extremely simple to install - which is a great
boon to anyone working on the clock or trying to juggle a number
of contracts. Get it, fit it, get out, move on and all that. To have
systems that require very little set-up or have self-diagnostics
and install capabilities is a great idea for the professional.
However there is rather a downside to making things so simple
that anyone can do it, and that is that anyone can do it.
In discussions with the MD of an installation company this
month for our Meet the Installer feature he mentioned the danger
of professional installers being taken out of the picture with easy
to fit systems and AI enabled tech. “”We have to be careful we
don’t design ourselves out of business” he said, which got me
thinking about the self-install market and how the professional
sector is actually responsible for making security systems so
easy to fit that your smaller domestic customers are giving it a go
themselves.
Hold on there, you say, we don’t just fit technology you know,
we manage it and maintain it and we know exactly how to set it
up so it won’t fail or false alarm - and you’re right. That is the
essence of the professional security installer; your expertise is
the key here, not solely the speed at which you can fit a system.
If you want a job doing properly get someone in who knows how
to do it. Which is why he also stated that he quite often gets calls
from people who had bought some CCTV online and now needs
someone to fit it, a scenario most of you will have been through.
But the problem remains that technology evolves to be
simpler to use as it becomes more established- there’s probably
a Law claiming such a thing. Everyone is looking for USPs and for
manufacturers, ease of install and use is one of these.
Overall, it’s unlikely that R&D departments will ever design
out the professional (be it in security or any other technology led
industry) but it’s certainly could be one of those “are we shooting
ourselves in the foot?” moments. I would guess as a pro installer
you would rather R&D bods looked at reliability, performance and
functionality over even further simplicity of install anyway.
Boston Networks
Boston Networks completes
2020 Vision Systems acquisition
Boston Networks has completed the acquisition
of 2020 Vision Systems. The purchase of North
Shields-based 2020, for an undisclosed sum, is
the latest step in an overall strategy to enable
Boston Networks to improve the performance
safety and security of buildings, campuses and
cities.
The management team at 2020, which has
grown over the last 25 years will continue to
manage the business, working with Boston
Networks CEO Scott McEwan and Boston’s
executive management team.
The deal, which brings the staff count of the
overall Boston Group to 170, is the second
acquisition since investment fund Aliter Capital
acquired a major stake in Boston Networks in
January 2018.
The first, in April, was that of PEL Services – a
London-based sound, life safety, security and
audio visual (AV) company.
Scott McEwan, Boston Networks CEO, said:
“We look forward to leveraging 2020’s many
years of experience of working in key areas of
critical physical security, which will help us to
drive towards the next phase of our growth as
we continue to focus on applying technology to
improve the performance, safety and security of
people, buildings and assets. In particular this
acquisition further deepens our services in the
further education sector, enhances our existing
security offering through the cloud platform and
significantly spreads our geographic coverage.”
Peter Houlis, 2020 Vision Systems managing
director, who is exiting the company but who
will continue as a consultant, said: “I believe the
partnership between 2020 and Boston
Networks, with the support of Aliter, gives the
company a major platform for growth in the
years ahead.”
Greig Brown, Partner of Aliter Capital and
Chairman of Boston Networks said: “2020
Vision Systems is a great addition and excellent
fit for the Boston Group.”
Kentec has won the Manufacturing Innovation
either domestic or overseas markets.
Derrick Hall, Director of Sales at Kentec, who
Made in the UK 2019.
It was also announced this month that
Paxton was awarded International Business of
the Year at the Sussex Business Awards.
Commenting on the win, Dan Drayton,
Paxton’s International Sales Manager, said:
NEWS EXTRA
Celebrating fewer false alarms?
The festive break is a
time for fun, family
and false alarms
warns fire brigade
and industry experts
“If an alarm system is
aging or becoming
unreliable
replacement is
advised when offset
against the cost of
disruption to a
business”
12
owards the end of 2018 as the countdown
Tto Christmas got well and truly underway
with offices and places of work getting into
the festive spirit, Siemens Building Technologies
warned UK businesses about the potential
consequences of false fire alarms during the
busiest period of the year.
False alarms from remotely-monitored fire
detection and fire alarm systems cost the UK
economy an estimated £1 billion in business
disruption with 95% of automatically-generated
alarms being proved to be false placing Fire and
Rescue Services (F&RS) and the public at
unnecessary risk.
“The vast majority of automatic fire alarm
calls are proven to be false and are often caused
by either false fire triggers or the inadequate
maintenance of alarm systems,” commented
Don Scott, fire engineering consultant Siemens
Building Technologies. “Christmas is already a
time of heightened risk of fire for many
businesses with the F&RS stretched to capacity
across the country. False alarms create further
pressures when emergency services have to
challenge whether alarms are genuine before
attending incidents – the time lost could end up
costing thousands of pounds in repairs or at
worst, put lives at risk.”
Ionisation or single-sensor optical smoke
detectors are a common cause of false alarm
activations as they have difficulty in accurately
distinguishing between airborne pollutants,
such as steam, aerosols, dust, cooking fumes,
insects, sparks, embers and a real fire. The
incorrect siting of detectors can also be
triggered if there is excessive air movement
from mechanical heating or ventilation.
Multi-sensor detectors are responsive to
more than one fire phenomena, i.e. smoke, heat
and carbon-monoxide and are proven to be more
immune to false alarm phenomena thereby
giving fewer false activations. For more
stringent applications; beam detectors, heat
detectors and aspirating detectors are available.
A regular maintenance programme ensures
the correct functioning of a fire alarm system –
inadequate servicing and testing compromise
safety. If an alarm system is aging or becoming
unreliable replacement is advised when offset
against the cost of disruption to a business.
Generally, detectors should be replaced every
10-15 years, depending upon the environment in
which they are installed and the manufacturers
recommendations.
Dave Green, national officer, Fire Brigades
Union added: “False alarms use up resources
which could be better served elsewhere, and
increase response times to actual emergencies.
But it is better to be safe than sorry, and fire
services should always be called when any
alarm is raised.”
“Fire services are under more pressure than
ever before, dealing with more incidents and
more fires, with increasingly fewer firefighters.
Since 2009, there has been a 23% decrease in
the number of firefighters across the UK. This
huge decrease in the number of firefighters has
meant that preventative work, which would help
to reduce the number of false alarms, has
Seagate – ST14000VX0008
An enhancement
called ImagePerfect
supports a larger
cache memory 256
MB that enables
better caching and
buffering for a larger
number of video
streams
What’s in the box?
14TB Hard Drive
The 14TB SkyHawk is a conventionally
packaged 3.5” hard drive with SATA
connection. It is promoted as a surveillance
optimised drive with “superior image integrity”.
Multi-Tier Caching allows for up to 64 HD video
streams to be handled.
Hard drives for DVRs and NVRs have
traditionally had a typical duty cycle of 90% data
writes to 10% data reads, i.e. an almost one-way
data flow. New AI (Artificial Intelligence) analytic
systems however, mean that constant queries are
being run on recorded data so there is a much
harder workload that must be accounted for. The
high volume of recorded images means that
reliability becomes even more important when
choosing storage media
Hardware
The drive has standard SATA connections and
these support latching connectors. Standard side
and base fixings for #6-32 UNC screws are
provided. Its size is the standard 147 x 102 mm
length and width and the depth is 26.1 mm so the
deepest of the 3.5” form factor. The manufacturer
recommends keeping a minimum of just 0.76 mm
clearance around the drive for cooling. The drive
weighs 690 grams. Typical 12-volt start-up current
is 1.8A so a reasonably heavy-duty power supply
is required, particularly if RAID or mirroring is
utilised. The manual states that you should
validate the configuration with the selected RAID
controller manufacturer to ensure that the full
capacity can be supported.
It is designed for 24/7/365 operation and has
a stated maximum rate of up to 550TB per year.
Rates above this may have an impact on
reliability.
Internally the drive consists of 8 disks spinning
at 7200 rpm and with 16 heads. A novel approach
to vibration has been taken particularly where
drives are used together or fans generate specific
vibrations. A piezoelectric micro-actuator allows
the head to be fed with feedback signals to
maintain inner track positioning during periods of
shock or vibration. Rotational vibration sensors
detect any physical disturbances and provide
input to the servo control system that uses these
to provide feedback signals to the main actuator
arm and the piezo micro-actuator. This feedforward
system goes by the name of AcuTrac®.
A further enhancement called ImagePerfect
supports a larger cache memory 256 MB that
enables better caching and buffering for a larger
number of video streams. This ensures that there
can be more contiguous blocks of data written to
the disk resulting in less movement of the
read/write head and improved reliability.
Error correction and data recovery algorithms
are built into the ImagePerfect system in order to
prevent video frame loss and to stop frames
freezing during playback.
Optimization of background tasks aims to
ensure that any host commands can be acted
upon immediately with no impact on recording or
playback performance. Whilst being able to
handle 90% write times for a large number of
video streams the drive can also deal with the
real-time analytic demands of Artificial
Intelligence managed systems.
For RAID based systems RapidRebuild is a
feature that can be used to rebuild only the failed
data and then copy the rest of the data to a spare
drive.
Configuration
If not pre-installed in a compatible NVR, the high
capacity means that it is necessary to use
one of the later operating systems to configure
the drive. It will also be necessary to ensure that
the latest firmware is installed in the target device
for any manufacturer that supports such high
capacity drives in their recorders.
With a Windows or Linux based system the
drive can be GPT initialised and a simple volume
created that results in an impressive
13,999,884,984,320 bytes of free space though
this reports as 12.7 TB due to the base 2 method
of calculation on Windows machines.
Health Management
In addition to standard SMART (Self-Monitoring,
Analysis and Reporting Technology), the drive
includes a range of software routines to monitor
its performance and operational status. This
monitoring is said to cover over 200 factors
including such things as temperature, error logs
and vibration statistics and to recommend
preventive actions.
The “SkyHawk Health Monitoring” is
currently incorporated into selected NVRs
produced by Hikvision, Dahua, Tiandy and Uniview.
This allows preventive measures and interventions
to be undertaken if anomalies are detected.
Replacement and recovery service
gives a potential for charging
customers a regular fee to provide
replacements and to return
recovered data
Recovery Service
Seagate have taken a “Prevention – Intervention –
Recovery” approach. With a robust data recording
process, notification of potential for failure and
finally a data recovery service that can provide an
advance replacement drive while the suspect
drive is returned to the manufacturer for analysis
and data recovery.
This replacement and recovery service gives a
potential for charging customers a regular fee to
provide such replacements and to return
recovered data if a suitable support agreement is
in place.
Performance
The drive runs relatively cool with a case
temperature of around 33°C when not enclosed.
The operating range is stated as 5°C to 70°C
though this is “drive reported temperature” not
ambient. The reported temperature matched the
measured case temperature during the tests.
In testing the drive reported a Write rate of just
under 260 MB/s just above its specified 250MB/s
and a Read rate just above 260MB/s. The
maximum Read and Write speeds were achieved
at the outer sections of the drive as expected with
a reduction for the inner tracks due to relative
speed and track length. In all cases the average
for the drive was above 200MB/s. This
performance was compared to a standard 1TB
7200 rpm desktop PC drive that achieved a
maximum 148 MB/s time and a 2TB 5200 rpm
desktop drive that achieved just 62MB/s.
Conclusion
A very fast and efficient hard drive with an
impressive specification, vast storage and
manufacturer support for data recovery if
required. The attention to the specific current and
developing requirements of the surveillance
industry should ensure that this drive provides
the required performance and longevity of
service.
PROMOTION
Cameras and cyber health
In the first of a new series of
blogs, Axis reveals the four ways
you could be risking the cyber
health of network cameras
ybersecurity threats have continued to
Cgrow substantially over the past few years.
Proactive prevention practices remain the
best protection, like early detection of poor
maintenance routines, which allows businesses
to build in cybersecurity into their work
routines. An important dimension here is
maintaining IT systems and network cameras —
as important as the deployment of the system
itself. Over time, if security systems are
inadequately maintained, they are likely to
become susceptible to vulnerabilities and data
breaches.
Below are the four signs of poor system
cyber health identified by Axis that you must be
aware of to ensure that surveillance and
security systems remain protected:
Teams are not aligned
This could be an issue regarding a disparity
between how hardware and software solutions
are connected to the network, or how IT policies
recommend they should be connected. A lack of
alignment between IT and security teams and
processes is amplified further when disparate
networks are involved, leading to increased
confusion regarding the correct security
measures to take. In turn, this will increase risks
of data breaches.
Users, policies and procedures
36% of all reported data breaches were due to
human error, according to the Notifiable Data
Breach report which covers all breaches from
April 1 to June 30 in 2018.
Following IT policies is a crucial protocol to
avoid extremely preventable breaches. By
having standards in place, users can ensure that
the system remains secure and operates at its
optimum level. Remember the enforcement of
policies needs to be ongoing, as some users or
new recruits may be unaware of, or be following,
procedures systematically. One unintended
action could put the whole system at risk.
Thus, if the company hasn’t specified clearly
defined requirements and expectations with
regards to IT security, the organisation suffers
from a dramatically increased likely to
encounter cyber-attacks.
Installation and maintenance plans
It can happen that the installer will not
completely understand or account for all of the
specific needs that a system requires at the time
it is deployed. It is also plausible for some
vendors to be not regularly visiting businesses
for a planned maintenance interval. Systems
that are not well maintained also suffer from
dramatically increased susceptibility to attacks.
All stakeholders responsible for maintenance
should have a clear schedule for testing and
maintaining the system, and that a clear audit
trail is kept — from the day of installation
onwards so any issues can be easily identified
and rectified,
Vendors and cyber security
Any technology vendor should ideally keep
users well informed about the best practices for
network health and discuss which precautions
can be taken regarding cybersecurity. Each
technology is part of a bigger system and it is
likely that systems are not fully secured.
Conclusion
Businesses cannot be expected to maintain the
protection of their assets independently. It
requires a collaborative effort to manage threats
on a system level. Protecting an organisation’s
network, its devices and services from
cyberattacks is not the user’s concern alone;
responsibility falls across the entire vendor
supply chain.
Over time, if security
systems are
inadequately
maintained, they are
likely to become
susceptible to
vulnerabilities and
data breaches
EDITOR’S CHOICE
The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss
new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day
activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our
attention so here we take a look at some of the products we
think you won’t want to miss this month.
Dual PSU redundancy module
maintains power supply
The D2500 Dual PSU redundancy
module from Dycon is decsribed as a
practical solution to the problem of
maintaining the 12 - 24Vdc supply to
secure infrastructure systems when the
unforeseen failure of single power supply unit
would seriously damage the operation of that
system.
The module, simply fitted between standard
12Vdc or 24Vdc Dycon switched-mode power
supply units, combines the two inputs into a
single output and, in the case of failure of one
unit, the second unit, automatically, and
seamlessly, takes over.
The D2500 works with any Dycon switchedmode
power supply unit, 12Vdc or 24Vdc, with a
maximum output current of 5A per unit, and also
features two LEDs that provide visual feedback on
the state of each input.
One camera to do the work of multiple units
Hanwha Techwin has introduced the PNM-9320VQP which, with four
sensors and a separate integral PTZ camera, is designed to detect and
track objects over wide open areas.
The option of exchangeable 2 and 5 megapixel lens modules enables
the camera sensors built into the H.265 Wisenet PNM-9320VQP to work
together to capture 360 degree images of up to 20 megapixel resolution. In addition,
the PNM-9320VQP’s 2 megapixel 32x PTZ camera element is automatically triggered
to zoom in and track a moving object or move to a user configured preset position,
when the motion detection function of the multi-directional camera detects activity.
“By placing a PTZ camera at the centre of the PNM-9320VQP we are able to provide
a highly affordable and efficient solution for city and wide area surveillance
applications such as car parks, shopping centres and warehouses,” said Uri
Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe. “As well as
installation and maintenance costs being significantly lower, end-users are able to
avoid incurring the higher capital costs of using five separate cameras to cover an
area and achieve the same level of functionality.”
INTERVIEW
Layering security systems
This month we talk to Steve Moody of RWS in Peterborough about
securing a building from the perimeter inwards. No onions were harmed
during this interview...
teve Moody is the High Security Sales
SManager at RWS. With extensive
experience built up from his time spent at
APT Controls, ATG Access and Betafence
perimeter security, Steve recently joined RWS
with the aim of developing the multi-faceted
business and introducing new products and
services to existing and new customers. We
caught up with him to find out more about the
company and to discover how he felt the
security industry has evolved to meet threats
head on.
How is the business going as we head
into 2019?
This is a really exciting time for us. I've only
been with the company for just three months,
but already we have set ambitious plans going
forward which has set the pace and
foundations. Traditionally RWS has been
managing fit-outs and high security works
including blast and ballistic protection for the
same clients all over the world and UK. We are
now looking to broaden our service portfolio, for
example we have recently launched the dual
Blast and Ballistic (BBX) protection block
system at the 2018 Expo exhibition at London in
partnership with Tarmac, which caused quite a
stir and a lot of interest not just within the UK.
The product complements our existing offering,
and adds another complete solution for our
customers. One of my roles at the company will
be to help push this new product alongside
existing perimeter, electronic and physical
security for vehicle and HVM control. This
means when it comes to new contracts we are
able to manage and deliver all of the security
work onsite ourselves, which gives our clients
peace of mind dealing with a single provider.
So what is it that the company does?
It depends on the size of the contract, but
essentially, we take on the project management
of refurbishing or protecting the building
including areas such as risk/fire assessment,
electronic security, lighting, blast and ballistic
protection right through to environmental
monitoring and building controlled air
conditioning. This can either be as the main
contractor or in partnership with others, with
RWS looking after certain aspects of the project.
Sometimes we will be advising customers how
to improve the security at their site or we could
be ripping a building apart to bring it back to life
again to a high standard refurbishment finish for
business. Making a building safe and secure
from all angles with electronic and physical
systems is my main area of expertise. Over the
years I have protected airports, embassies,
stadiums, government buildings and public
places from a range of potential threats. You
only have to look at the news to see what is
happening around the world to understand what
may be knocking at our door.
Have you seen these threats change
over the years?
Very much so and we have had to adjust what
we consider to be the best system choice for a
specific client because of this, as we are faced
with more organised threats these days, so you
have to use several levels of protection to help
remove a potential attack from being successful.
Steve Moody
“Making a building
safe and secure from
all angles with
electronic and
physical systems is my
main area of
expertise”
INTERVIEW
“We have recently
launched the dual
Blast and Ballistic
(BBX) protection block
system at the 2018
Expo exhibition at
London in partnership
22
(continued from previous page)
Security is a continuous evolving industry which
keeps it exciting, and understanding what
products and systems are available, helps us to
provide the client with the best system choice to
suit their individual needs and requirements.
Do you install the security systems
yourselves?
We manufacture and install windows and doors
from our factory, which is where RWS originated
its core skills. From there we moved into blast
and ballistic and the business evolved from
there over the years growing and developing
into the security market. We find ourselves now
as a systems integrator for all of the other
products that we offer, working with teams of
independent installers that we have had longstanding
relationships with that we use for the
work. They have all of the required high security
clearances needed to carry out the work, as
obviously much of what we do is very sensitive.
How do you decide on which technology
to specify?
It depends on a number of factors. For example
the company may already have a system in
place so it might be a case of finding out
whether what they have is suitable for their new
business requirements, and if not we may need
to replace it or network it with other tech. It
comes down to what the client is looking for,
sometimes they have a good understanding of
what they need, others look for us to provide
the options available to them. With access
control there are so many different options,
probably more than for any other security
discipline, so determining what
best suits the application
depends on what the
customer wants
to control
and what level of security they require. Then we
can look at how to improve what is already in
place and with our integrator hat on, fine-tune
their security needs. Integration is the buzzword
of the moment but not everyone wants (or
needs) their systems to be connected,
standalone technology suits plenty of
installations. However where we can use a
platform to integrate the technology so it all
'speaks' to each other allows us to develop
amazing solutions for the customer. We
recommend a range of solutions and talk them
through with the customer - we don't try and fit
a particular product or brand to the application,
we use the customer requirements to determine
the best system, not the other way around. We
have many strengths, one of them is that we are
very good at listening and hearing what the
client is looking to achieve, and that is what we
deliver, it’s simple.
Do legacy systems present any
problems?
Whether or not we keep a legacy system in a
building again depends on what end result the
customer is looking for, but nine times out of
ten, when the premises are upgraded with a
network the security technology upgrade
follows suit. This could be as simple as fitting a
biometric system in addition to a card system,
thus adding another layer of identification for
access control. Of course in high security
applications you would not use wireless security
technology for obvious reasons.
Where do you stand on the thinking that
AI-driven CCTV is the future?
It may be good for some applications away from
what we do, but for us and the high security
contracts we are involved with, you simply
couldn't rely on one system to do everything; a
single point of failure is too much of a risk. Our
business would not be comfortable
recommending one solution to provide all the
defence measures at a site. To protect a building
properly, you have to look at security in terms of
layers, like an onion, starting at the outer
perimeter and working inwards. The best
protection comes from using a range of
technologies, which can be linked together if
required. For us, having access, fire and intruder
etc all being monitored by one AI system, we
would not be comfortable with this as a
business. Layering your security means that
should any one system fail for any reason then
there is another level of protection behind it,
you’re not leaving yourself totally exposed.
You operate globally, so is Brexit a
concern?
I think everyone is concerned to a certain level.
I'm sure it will have an effect on the UK market
and our dealings abroad, but because we have
such diversity in what we offer we
are confident with what we have around us that
we will not see much of a ripple. All
organisations have peaks and troughs through
their trading year, it’s just managing the best
way you can when you’re faced with such events
which you have no control of.
Do you think that security should be
covert or visible?
I'm a great believer that if you make people
aware of security systems that are in place,
there is a greater chance they will go elsewhere.
Obviously it’s dependant to what level of
security you are assessing and what the asset is
that you’re protecting.
What will the security world be like in the
future?
Unfortunately the threats will not go away nor
stay stagnant it’s fair to say, so as we see the
threats change, the security industry will
change, it’s the nature of the beast. I would
expect that cyber, electronic and physical
security will continue to develop and be a major
force in the defence against future threats
imposed worldwide.
“Threats will not go
SECURITY
Time and crime again
Times change and so do the types
of crime reported to the police.
Domestic burglary is one that has
been on the books from the start, so
how will it fare in 2019?
At the point of writing this article the general
media outlets are still reporting regular
incidents of knife attacks in London. This
type of crime, despite all of the high profile knife
amnesties, awareness campaigns and stop-andsearch
powers, appears to be spiralling out of
control. Whether this is put down to social
struggles, gangs, rap glorification, violent video
games from an early age or a combination of all of
the above, it is a problem that needs addressing
to prevent another young person from needlessly
dying at the hands of someone who seems to put
a very low value on life.
When it comes to other reported crimes there
are definite trends to be seen. For example
computer fraud and misuse is another illegal
activity of the age, although figures suggest it is
starting to tail off. Scammers, phishers and
hackers will always have an agenda and their
expertise in manipulating online victims to give
up their savings from afar will continue to be more
appealing than taking a shotgun into a bank.
According to Joe Traynor, ONS Centre for Crime
and Justice: “Over recent decades, we’ve seen
continued falls in overall levels of crime but in the
last year the trend has been more stable. The
latest figures show no change in the total level of
crime but variation by crime types. We saw rises
in some types of theft and in some lower-volume
but higher-harm types of violence, balanced by a
fall in the high-volume offence of computer
misuse. There was no change in other highvolume
offences such as overall violence, criminal
damage and fraud.
“To put today’s crime survey figures into
context, only 2 out of 10 adults experienced crime
in the latest year.”
Perhaps the single crime that will grow the
most rapidly in terms of incidents of reporting to
the police is that of hate crime; largely down to
the vagueness of what the term represents and
the speed in which some people can be ‘offended’
by a comment made by another individual. The
official definition is ‘any criminal offence which is
perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be
motivated by hostility or prejudice towards
someone based on a personal characteristic.’ As a
result the number of incidents of hate crimes
being recorded has risen sharply with Home
Office figures showing that In 2017/18, there were
94,098 hate crime offences recorded by the police
in England and Wales, an increase of 17%
compared with the previous year. This continues
the upward trend in recent years with the number
of hate crimes recorded by the police having more
than doubled since 2012/13 (from 42,255 to
94,098 offences; an increase of 123%). We have
also seen spikes in hate crime following certain
events such as the EU Referendum and the
terrorist attacks in 2017.
So what of the more established crimes? ONS
figures show that the estimated number of
domestic burglary incidents rose sharply through
the 1980s and early 1990s (peaking at 2,445,000
in the year to December 1993) and then fell
steeply until the survey year ending March 2005
(to 1,057,000). The underlying trend in domestic
burglary remained fairly flat between the year
ending March 2005 and year ending March 2011
surveys. However, there were general year-onyear
decreases from the survey year ending
March 2011 onwards, down to a record low
650,000 incidents in the survey year ending
March 2017.
Fire and rescue incident statistics for England,
year ending March 2018, report there were 334
fire-related fatalities from accidental dwelling
fires in England from April 2017 to March 2018,
representing an increase of 27 percent of all firerelated
fatalities in England. The Office for
National Statistics reported over 666,000
ONS figures show
that the estimated
number of domestic
burglary incidents
rose sharply through
the 1980s and early
1990s and then fell
steeply
SECURITY
Whilst some statistics
claim that a UK home
is broken into every
30 seconds, the
statistics on housebreaking
clearly show
that criminals target
those homes that
appear to have the
least protection
(from previous page)
domestic burglaries between July 2017 and June
2018, with 432,267 of ‘burglary offences’ recorded
by the police.
Households are currently four times less likely
to be a victim of burglary than in 1995.
The CSEW Nature of Crime table provides
information about the circumstances surrounding
incidents of domestic burglary over the last
decade, including:
• in incidents of domestic burglary in a
dwelling where the offender entered the dwelling,
the offender gained entry through a door around
70% of the time and through a window around
30% of the time
• purses, wallets and money have typically
been the most frequently stolen items in domestic
burglaries in dwellings, with jewellery and
watches, computer equipment and other
electronic goods (for example, cameras) also
being commonly stolen
• around 70% of domestic burglaries in
dwellings take place during the week (equivalent
to 16% per weekday) and around 30% take place
during the weekend (equivalent to 12% per
weekend day)
• approximately two-fifths of domestic
burglaries in dwellings take place during the
morning or afternoon (6am to 6pm) and threefifths
take place during the evening or night (6pm
to 6am)
• in over half of incidents of domestic burglary
in a dwelling where an offender gained entry into
the dwelling, someone was at home at the time
• in the majority of years, it was almost equally
likely in incidents of domestic burglary in a
dwelling that the offender(s) was a stranger or
known by the victim
The Police advise that homes with no security
measures in place are five times more likely to be
burgled than those with simple security measures
however they do recommend that building are not
protected solely by alarms, but a suite of
measures.
The Home Security Action website says that
government statistics show that 60% of
burglaries on homes fitted with burglar alarms are
unsuccessful, which proves that they do act as a
useful deterrent. Burglars usually avoid breaking
into premises fitted with an intruder alarm and
look for easier pickings elsewhere.
Whilst some statistics claim that a UK home is
broken into every 30 seconds, the statistics on
house-breaking clearly show that criminals target
those homes that appear to have the least
protection. It is widely considered that the
majority of house break-ins are not planned but
driven by opportunity - an open window, an empty
house - in short, a house that looks easy prey.
The statistics, and burglars, agree that the
main deterrent is still an intruder alarm.
Independent research reveals that 60% of
burglars target homes which appear empty and
70% of burglars said they felt that people do not
make their homes secure enough. Moreover, 67%
said they are put off by homes with an alarm and
37% said they target homes in darkness.
The importance of the intruder alarm is clear,
so it is essential that the installation should be
correct and the maintenance contract addresses
all of the problem areas to keep the system
running properly. This is especially pertinent
when the alarm is listed with a home insurer.
One trend that we are all familiar with is the
growth of DIY security systems that certainly fulfil
a genuine requirement for additional security as
outlined by police advice and also appeal to the
smartphone–centric generation of new
homeowners. Unfortunately these systems, as
any of you that have been called out to replace
such technology will know, often do not meet the
26
www.psimagazine.co.uk
initial requirement in terms of being fit for
purpose.
Of course there have been some very
successful launches in the market, for example
Ring, which began as a video door entry system
with remote monitoring that now has evolved into
a range of products including cameras and
lighting. Such successes have led some
professional technology manufacturers to
develop their own systems to compete in the
same sector which can only serve to improve the
overall quality of products on offer, especially in
the CCTV market which has seen some very poor
DIY systems hit the shelves (and stay on there).
The good news for homeowners however is
that modern professional intruder alarms from
companies such as Texecom, RISCO, Pyronix et al
also feature the kinds of tech that work with
smart devices and furthermore boast the abilities
to add quality peripherals such as cameras,
sensors and home automation switches and
controls. The panel has almost become the
platform for the technology and offers the suite of
security measures that can help keep the crime
statistics down while also providing remote
management of home electronics.
Some crimes have become less ‘popular’ over
the years such as bank robbery, largely down to
the technology that banks have installed and the
risk vs reward ratio, others like internet based
thefts have risen along with the increase in the
popularity of home computers and widespread
use of networks for banking and transactions.
The domestic residence remains a place where
burglars can access high price goods very quickly
going in via doors and windows. Yet surprisingly
there are still a high number of homes without
any visible forms of security to deter criminals
and plenty without suitable systems in place to
work as required in the event of an incident. There
are opportunities in the domestic sector for
installers despite the upsurge in DIY launches. By
proposing professional level technology to
customers based on quality, results, insurance
benefits and peace of mind should help them
from becoming a statistic in 2019.
Some crimes have
Especially with all the
uncertainty of today’s
political climate, how
‘saleable’ is your
business?
Preparing for your exit
PSI’s resident business expert Jim
Rathbone advises how you could
prepare for exit with eight drivers
that optimise business value
specially with all the uncertainty of today’s
Epolitical climate, how ‘saleable’ is your
business? If you would like to have the
choice of selling in the future, consider eight key
factors buyers have in their minds when
purchasing a company. Also consider what
actions you should be taking in the light of this.
Financial performance
Companies are generally bought and sold using
a multiple of earnings. Financial buyers see
businesses as streams of future profits. The
absolute size of your business, turnover and
profit affects the value of your business. Size
matters, with smaller businesses appearing
riskier than larger ones. So identify and pursue
strategies to increase your profits and have
more predictable future profit streams.
Growth potential
Acquirers typically pay more for businesses that
have the potential to grow. What is your
business’ growth potential? Consider how
scalable your business is - geographically
(selling current products in other areas),
horizontally (selling more products and services
to your existing customers) and vertically
(scaling up and selling more using existing
infrastructure).
Resilience
Saleable businesses are resilient - not overly
reliant on any one customer, employee or
supplier. If you´re too reliant on any one
employee, you are at significant risk if that
employee leaves. If you are too reliant on any
one customer, your business risks instability. Try
to reduce your overreliance – e.g. your largest
customer should represent no more than 15
percent of turnover.
Cash generating
The more cash an acquirer must inject into your
company when taking it over, the less that
acquirer will pay for it. The inverse is also true:
the less cash your acquirer must transfer into
your business, the higher the potential price.
Identify the ways you can better manage your
working capital so that you are best in class in
terms of cash generation in your sector.
Recurring income
One of the biggest factors determining the value
of your company is the extent to which an
acquirer can see where sales will come from in
the future. If you are in a business that must
start from scratch each month, the value of your
company will be lower than if you have a
recurring source of future revenue. A clear way
to increase the levels of recurring income is to
grow your service business and the revenue
28
www.psimagazine.co.uk
streams from service contracts, service works,
upgrades and call outs.
Sustainable competitive
advantage
Warren Buffett is famous for investing in
companies that have a protective 'moat' – a
clear point of differentiation. The deeper and
wider the ‘moat’, the harder it is for competitors
to compete. Think how you can increase the
differentiated value you bring your customers
and how you can differentiate your service
offering.
Customer satisfaction
The extent to which your customers are
satisfied, and your ability to assess customer
satisfaction in a consistent and rigorous way, is
very important to acquirers. Contract attrition
levels and the age of your debtors are important
indicators of customer satisfaction. Consider
putting in place an objective way of regularly
measuring the satisfaction of your customers
such as a customer survey.
Lack of dependence on owners
To be valuable to an acquirer, your business
must be able to succeed and grow without the
business owners being at the hub and driving all
key activities. Work on systemising your
business and developing a high performing
management team that can operate without the
owners being present on a day to day basis.
As a security installer, if you would like to
develop a business that is saleable and attracts
a higher price, consider these eight drivers of
saleability and what actions you need to take to
achieve the best value for the many years you
have invested in your business.
Switching on to low light
Uri Guterman, Head of Product &
Marketing for Hanwha Techwin
Europe, puts low light cameras
under the spotlight
ccording to a recent report produced by
AIHS Markit, which specialises in providing
insight on the areas which are shaping the
business landscape, the number of video
surveillance cameras equipped with advanced
low-light functionality is set to soar over the
next four years. Whilst it is estimated that in
2015 there were approximately 4.75 million of
these types of cameras delivered to the market,
in 2022 this number is projected to increase to
about 51 million.
The good news for system integrators and
their end-user clients is that, through
economies of scale and increased competition,
the price of these cameras is likely to gradually
reduce. This will make them affordable for
virtually any video surveillance project and thus
fuel the growth in the number of them deployed.
Conversely, it is bad news for intruders who
would normally use the cloak of darkness to
break into a site, as end-users are now able to
deploy high definition cameras which are able to
capture identification grade images in very low
light conditions.
What do we mean by ‘advanced low-light
camera capability? Well, as an example, a bullet
camera which has recently come onto the
market is being supplied with a 0.94 f-stop lens
which, when combined with sens-i technology
built into the camera’s new sensor, delivers
noiseless, clear colour images when the light
levels are as low as 0.004Lux. The low light
performance of this particular camera means
there are unlikely to be many situations where
the camera’s built-in IR illumination will be
required.
Nice or necessary?
Human beings are able to observe objects and
activity in relatively low lighting conditions
thanks to the complex processing which goes on
between the eye and brain. Until recently, video
surveillance cameras have not shared anything
close to this phenomenal processing power and
www.psimagazine.co.uk
have therefore struggled to deliver quality
images in challenging lighting conditions.
Green issues such as light pollution and
energy costs, as well as the capital and
installation costs associated with the provision
of supplementary lighting, have significantly
increased the demand for the latest generation
of video surveillance cameras which are able to
generate evidence grade images in very low
light conditions.
Although many of these cameras feature
built-in IR LED illumination, these alone will not
satisfy the requirements for all video
surveillance application requirements. Where,
for example, cameras have been installed for
covert surveillance purposes, the red light
emanating from the LEDs are likely to give the
game away to unwanted intruders well before a
control room operator can alert security guards
or the police. For safety reasons, railway
operators will not deploy cameras which have
red IR illumination.
Nevertheless, they are increasing in
popularity and understandably so, as the built
in IR LEDs which consume low amounts of
energy, are automatically activated and
depending on the camera model, can provide
of cameras, the IR
intensity is
automatically
adjusted to
provide the
appropriate level
of IR light
depending on the
zoom ratio, whilst some ‘Flateye’ cameras have
a flat surface cover which is applied to the front
of the lens instead of the dome cover. This
reduces IR diffused reflection which is caused
by moisture and in the absence of a normal
transparent dome cover, also removes the effect
scratches can have on image clarity.
Specification
There isn't a single answer to the difficulties
presented by low light environments, but with
the right advice, designing a video surveillance
solution to cope with the challenge should not
be a difficult task.
A combination of high resolution and low
sensitivity is vital, but it is also important that the
cameras have performance enhancing features
and functions, such as Wide Dynamic Range
(WDR), Automatic Gain Control (AGC) and Sense-
Up. The lens used must also be able to match the
performance of the camera, thereby getting as
much light as possible onto the image sensor.
It obviously makes sense to work with one of
the manufacturers who is prepared to back its
confidence in its low light cameras by being
prepared to carry out a live on-site demonstration.
It is certainly worth taking the time to research
various options so that you don’t suffer from
‘buyers’ remorse’ by making a hasty decision.
There is no shortage of cameras to choose
from, but these can be filtered by seeking advice
from a systems integrator or the technical
department of the distributor they source
cameras from.
Do you use a distributor or buy direct?
We do both. Fire systems we get from
manufacturers and security technology we buy
from Enterprise or ADI.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
We have always been driven by accreditation and
what it stands for. When we started out with it
was just for intruder then we moved on to CCTV
and access control. Unfortunately I do see a
number of companies that do not have fire
accreditation and haven't put in the effort still
picking up large projects so I think we do need to
educate clients on the value of using accredited
companies. In terms of fire jobs we’ve had people
telling us that they approached us because of
BAFE while for security, which is driven by
insurers, accreditation is a must. Domestic
customers don't seem to be too worried about
certification until their insurer says that the
system needs to be maintained by an accredited
firm.
What would be a typical project for you?
There isn't a typical project for us as we've always
been happy to take on any work regardless of the
challenge. For example we fitted solar powered
systems for an application that didn't have mains
power and we had never done that before.
Basically, we’ll go from a small domestic system
right up to a large integrated fire system. When I
first started all we were fitting were intruder
alarms and with a name like Welwyn Garden
Alarms people often assume that we just do
alarms for gardens in Welwyn, but we certainly
don't!
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
Timing in the domestic market is always an issue.
For example you hear "I've lived in this house for
twenty years and got burgled yesterday, so can
you fit me an alarm tomorrow," which is an issue I
imagine all installers are familiar with. I think you
have to manage people's expectations when it
comes to lead times as no matter how many
engineers I seem to have, the time frames don't
change very much.
Is there is a security skills shortage?
I think that there is a shortage and everyone
knows the situation. The danger is that
installation companies are now picking up people
who demand a high level of pay but don't perhaps
command it - the demands are high and the skill
set is quite low. We've been lucky in that we've
always had the attitude that we should train up
our own people and invest in our people. I have
lost engineers over the years as they have started
their own firms, which is fine, but we now have a
young, driven team on board and I'm happy with
everyone onboard.
What will be the impact of smart/home
automation on the security sector?
I know that there are plenty of DIY systems out
there but you need to have a certain amount of
skill and experience to install it properly. We
spend a lot of time taking out self-installed
systems and putting in a professional product
instead and, to be fair to the manufacturers, the
systems are worlds apart in terms of reliability.
We do get the dreaded phone call of "I've bought
a camera system, can you come and fit it" and our
general answer is “no”, because if there are any
issues afterwards they will be our problems,
despite the low quality of the kit. The main
together raising standards
“When I first started
in the industry there
was a mindset that if
you had a burglar
alarm on your
property then you
must have something
worth stealing, which
at the time was
probably true
because the systems
were not cheap”
(continued from previous page)
problem with wireless systems is the battery and
failures. And don't forget some of the self-install
systems rely entirely on home broadband being
active. As soon as the network goes down the
system is not working.
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
When I first started in the industry there was a
mindset that if you had a burglar alarm on your
property then you must have something worth
stealing, which at the time was probably true
because the systems were not cheap in those
days. However, today the technology is so
affordable that it no longer fair to say that about
alarms, although you do occasionally still hear it.
The other myth concerns spiders setting off
detectors - I'm not sure if that's as common an
event as people say. I think this is more a case of
the engineer's skill set and whether or not they
have checked if there is reduced voltage on the
cable or any environmental issues.
How will AI affect the future of technology
in the market?
Technology is only as good as the front end that is
running the system. I think many of us have had
experience of voice activated home automation
systems that don't do what we want them to do,
so I would say that maybe at the high-end of
security where lots of money is spent on
analytics, the tech is probably great, but at the
lower end there is still a long way to go. I can see
AI being more widespread in its use, but I hope
we don't end up designing expertise out of the
mix so we end up with false alarm levels going
through the roof. I don't think that you can put the
monitoring of access, intruder, fire and
surveillance all in the hands of one camera
compared to having dedicated technology for
each discipline. Security needs to be secure.
What would make your job easier?
Another me would be good! Again if we could
manage people's expectations that would help.
Customers see things happening in films or on TV
and assume that's what their system will do. The
CGI and the liberties with reality that movie
writers take with security, especially CCTV, leads
people to believe that they can do things like
zooming many times into images. Managing their
expectations over price is also an issue.
What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic
security product?
I'm not sure there is one really. Back in the day
there were differences in all of the alarm panels
so that they each had various functions that were
not on the other panels. Today the manufacturers
have done such a good job with their product
development that the panels tick all of the boxes
in terms of functionality.
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
To be honest I'm more into UFC than football, but I
do know that the team is getting better. I like
Gareth Southgate, but when you look at the other
teams from around the world we might need a bit
of luck on our side to win anything. They get paid
a lot of money and I do wonder if players are
driven by winning trophies as much as in years
gone by.
If you won £25,000 what would you do with
it?
There are two answers; the selfish one of going
on holiday or the unselfish one of giving it to
charity - so maybe I would do a bit of both!
Axis outlines commitment for
sustainable values
A white paper from Axis challenges the need for a new way of
looking at business value over time, and what intangible assets
that needs to be examined and included when building long term partnership. It
outlines a couple of areas where sustainability has a direct impact on today’s way
of doing business, but also how the approach of circular economy will impact the
way we do business. The paper also touches upon the subject of building the right
sustainability strategy and more importantly, how it can be delivered throughout
not only an organisation, but rather the whole supply chain involved in today’s complex business models.
"We have laid out an overview of how we strive to achieve our goals in this area, and the ways in which we believe all
companies should behave if we’re to move towards fairer and more sustainable models of doing business. That is why we work
Vanderbilt Discussions:
We need to talk about IoT security
IoT technology is accelerating at such a pace that it can
potentially create detrimental problems for which many
organizations may be ill-prepared – or may not even be able to comprehend.
Several flags have been raised already when it comes to the connectivity of IoT
technology, and the debate still centers around who is responsible for the
security of these kinds of devices.
When the internet first originated in the mid-90s, it was a utility only accessible through computers and dial tones. Now its
reach is far and wide, and IoT technology includes everything from wearable devices that are equipped with sensors that collect
biometric data, to smart home systems enabling users to control their lights and thermostats.
These devices typically come with built-in electronics, software, and sensors, and are also assigned unique IP addresses. This
allows them to communicate and exchange data with other machines. This design is built around
convenience. But how much attention should be centered on security when designing these
devices?
The smart way for a more
efficient video security project
The time consuming and costly task of planning,
configuration, installation and reporting of a video
security project has just been made simple by a very clever app from
Bosch, Project Assistant.
Designed and developed by Bosch Security Systems to assist system
integrators, the Project Assistant app is available to download for free
from various App stores for installation on desktop, tablet and
smartphone devices, and works on Apple, Windows and Google platforms.
We wanted it to be accessible to everyone, because everyone should be
benefiting from the control, transparency and efficiency made possible by the Project Assistant app at every phase of a video
security project.
Now, project set-up and pre-configuration can start in the office without the physical camera. Only the project plans, IP
addresses and a password from the client are required for the system integrator to create a new project
via the app (or an Excel-compatible file format), with the option to set up per camera, or multiple
cameras at once. Visit: www.boschsecurity.com/gb/en/products/video-
How does Texecom Connect
actually work?
You’ve heard all about Texecom Connect. It’s designed
to help end users take control of their homes and
security in a way that was never before possible. It puts them in
complete control. But how does it actually work?
Everything revolves around the Texecom Connect App. It’s the point
of access to a host of features and allows users to tailor the Connect
experience to their own particular needs.
If the App is the point of access, the Timeline is how you actually
navigate the App. It’s basically a status screen with an ‘at a glance’ view
of the security system and peripherals. Users can use the Timeline to
‘actively’ manage things and make regular changes, or they can simply
manage things ‘by exception’ – which means everything is set and they only get notified when there’s a change or an event
occurs that they’re not expecting.
INSIDE STORY
Newly launched Firexo
is reportedly able to
quickly extinguish all
classes of fire (A, B,
C, D, E, & F) and only
requires small
volumes to do so
“If a person was to
hesitate and not know
the right extinguisher
to grab in a highpressure
situation this
could be disastrous”
New launch tackles fires fast
Within the current firefighting time frames,
office buildings are still not protected
enough from the damage a blaze can
inflict before it is terminated. It’s extremely
difficult for businesses to recover after a
devastating fire – in fact, 80% of companies fail
within 18 months of a major fire. So what can be
done to reduce the time it takes to tackle a fire?
The company behind the recently launched
Firexo product claim that in one test, nine litres
of the liquid put out a car fire in 53 seconds,
compared with conventional methods which can
take up to an hour and 1,800 litres of water.
Furthermore, the liquid is described as
being able to extinguish all classes of fire (A, B,
C, D, E & F); electrical, fuel, gas, oil, metals, and
solid combustible material fires can all be put
out with it.
Firexo is also listed as environmentally
friendly – the non-toxic liquid is made from
natural ingredients and is biodegradable, with a
neutral PH. It cools materials to a temperature
that they can be handled, creates less debris,
and requires small volumes to extinguish a fire.
The idea is that a rapid-response motorcycle
could be dispatched to tackle any kind of fire
and could hold enough of the liquid to put out
up to three cars. Whereas currently, up to three
fire engines complete with crews could be
deployed to tackle a car fire. They may also
have to deploy foam in addition to water, which
is harmful to the environment and requires prior
permission for the firefighters to use.
PSI caught up with Dave Breith, CEO of
Firexo, to find out more about the product:
Why did you develop the liquid?
“Firexo was developed and invented with the
sole intention of saving lives. Despite the
incredibly brave efforts of our fire services every
single day, the current methods used to tackle
fires are simply too slow and uneconomical. The
product stands as the solution to this, as
something that can effectively halve the entire
process. My career began in telecoms, where I
worked for roughly 20 years before venturing
into some new and exciting projects. Firexo for
me is a culmination of everything I believe in. It
is incredibly clever technology, it has the
potential to cater for a need within the industry,
but most of all, it has the potential to protect
people from harm’s way. This is what gets me
out of bed in the morning!”
There are extinguishers for all fire types,
are you looking to replace them all?
“In short, yes! Firexo can extinguish all fires,
and its main benefit is that it removes the
confusion and worry that people have regarding
what fire extinguisher to use on which fire. If a
person was to hesitate and not know the right
extinguisher to grab in a high-pressure situation
this could be disastrous. Moreover, if they were
then to use the wrong extinguisher, the blaze
could become even worse. The product prevents
this confusion and helps users to feel confident
when reaching for the can.”
What reaction have you had from
organisations like BAFE, FIA, insurers?
“The reaction and support that we have
received from government bodies, fire-safety
experts and fire stations around the country has
blown us away over the past few months. We
have received interest from countries all over
the world.”
Is the product available for fire safety
installers to sell on to customers?
“Firexo is going to be available to fire safety
installers around the country to sell on to
domestic/commercial customers as of January
2019.”
Firexo will be available in four different forms:
Sachet, Spray,, three sizes of extinguisher and
Mass.
CCTV camera coating cuts
council costs
TCA, the provider of security services for North
Lanarkshire Council, has seen savings of around
£50,000 a year, after installing 300 Panasonic
CCTV cameras, waterproofed with ClearSight
coating.
Located east of Glasgow, North Lanarkshire
has challenging weather conditions for any
technology, which has previously hindered the
provision of security in the area. High levels of
rain resulted in water marks, dust spots and
condensation, which meant heavy maintenance
burdens and the potential for missing incidents.
When considering an upgrade to the system,
TCA needed to combat these issues with a
security system that remained affordable in an
era of local authority austerity.
TCA secured the lower total cost of ownership
they were seeking by implementing Panasonic
PTZ cameras. The ClearSight coating forms an
invisible layer over the surface of the dome
preventing water droplets from obscuring
New doors secure Hackney
commercial property
Delta Security has installed new steel, fire-rated
security doors and an access control system
designed to combat a series of break-ins at a
commercial property managed by Property
Initiatives Management.
The property, based in East-London’s
Shoreditch, is home to approximately ten
businesses and had become the target of thefts
and burglaries. An independent security survey
was conducted and steel security doors were
proposed as part of the solution.
Derrick Samuel, Building Manager, Property
Initiatives Management, says he approached
Delta Security to deliver the solution having
previously worked with the company.
The fire-rated double steel doors were installed
with a twin mag pull door handle. The company
also installed a Paxton access control fob key
system that Derrick is able to manage remotely,
enabling or disabling access to the key fobs on
the system as and when required.
footage, while also eliminating dirt and dust
build up on the dome cover.
“On many models, when the rain stops, you
tend to get a coating of dust on the dome, which
the camera then focuses on,” says Nikola
Graham, Operations Manager. “We have now
actually halved the number of maintenance
visits, which we think probably equates to a
£50,000 annual saving.”
The initial installation took place over two
years with the bulk of the cameras installed on
27 high rise blocks, identified as having
problems with crime and antisocial behaviour.
“The council has seen a reduction in the
number of criminal and anti-social incidents
within the residential blocks, the cameras have
contributed greatly to this. The people living in
the blocks feel safer as a result,” said Graeme
Good, Business Manager at TCA. “A camera in
the Motherwell area has on several occasions
been used to catch vehicles that were used in
some pretty serious crime. The quality of the
footage and the evidence packs that we are
giving the police is exactly what they are looking
for.”
The control room in Coatbridge has eyes
trained on 21 Full HD monitors, with 875
cameras monitored round the clock utilising
tours and salvos. A further 300 cameras are
linked in and monitored out of hours, if an alarm
is triggered. Various triggers, such as alarms
within the lifts, will show as priorities for the
operators.
“It’s a great credit to our integration partners
that some of the cameras we monitor are 16
years old,” adds Graeme Good. “Every time we
have a fault we will appraise whether it’s cost
effective to repair the unit. If not, we’ll continue
with the roll out of Panasonic, which have been
virtually faultless thus far.”
“Delta visited the property to conduct a survey,
and it was agreed that the Delta fire-rated
doubled steel doors were the best solution for this
site,” says Derrick. “The property is now as secure
as it can be.”
Fire Service improves site
access control
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is
responsible for the fire and rescue service across
the East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull,
and North and North East Lincolnshire, serving a
population of almost one million people.
The Service required an access control solution
that could secure multiple sites on a single
system. The system needed to maintain the
security of the premises whilst allowing ease of
entry and exit when responding to an emergency.
Flexible access permissions across twelve of the
fire stations in the region were also essential.
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service worked
with Delta Security Systems to recommend an
access control solution that could meet their
requirements. Delta recommended Paxton’s Net2,
with PaxLock Pro wireless access control in a door
handle, and Net2 Entry IP video door entry.
Garry Roscoe, Engineering Manager, at Delta,
said: “The Paxton system offers Humberside Fire
and Rescue Service the functionality to manage
and maintain access to twelve fire stations across
the region. They can easily update access
permissions, depending on the security clearance
of each user, and monitor who is on site at any
time, ensuring that all fire stations are secure
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge relies on
customised security solutions from Bosch to
ensure safe operations. The world’s largest seacrossing
bridge was opened by Chinese officials
late in October 2018. Spanning 55 kilometres in
length, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge
directly connects Hong Kong to Macao and then
to the Chinese city of Zhuhai for the first time. At
a total cost of $20 billion, it is a major boost for
China’s Greater Bay Area, an emerging industrial
and technological hotbed that is home to 68
million people and a showcase project for Bosch
Building Technologies.
The large-scale project was built over the
course of eight years using 400,000 tons of steel
and includes underwater tunnels and two
artificial islands that serve as customs ports.
Ensuring the security of these two islands,
where drivers need to present special permits to
use the new bridge and pass customs
checkpoints, was a priority from the start.
Bosch Building Technologies won the
contract to provide the artificial islands with
video surveillance, intrusion alarms, as well as
public address and voice evacuation systems.
On the island between Zhuhai and Macao,
the Bosch partner Shanghai SAGA Electronic
Technology installed more than 5,700 Bosch
loudspeakers and over 260 amplifiers which are
all managed via the Praesideo Digital Public
Address and Emergency Sound system. Fulfilling
a key customer request, the installation
when the crew are out
on an emergency
response call. The new
PaxLock Pro has been
fantastic for managing
access through the
office doors to ensure
only those with correct
clearance can enter.”
John Mann, Facilities
Manager from Joint
Estates Service, Melton,
who work with the Fire and Rescue Service said:
“What we really like about the Paxton system is
the ability to set time zones for all of our stations
and headquarters; outside of which the doors
lock automatically, removing the need for any
individual to manually lock the doors. This really
increases site security and provides greater
peace of mind. The roll call report feature is also
a valuable tool for us, as it provides a list of last
known locations of any user not marked as safe in
the event of an emergency. This is incredibly
beneficial to an organisation as large as ours.”
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and Delta
Security plan to expand the Net2 system across a
further 21 fire stations in the region, and add
more PaxLock Pro wireless door handles across
the network.
incorporates 15 different models of ceiling, wall
mount, and line array speakers to blend in with
the facility’s modern interior.
On the island outside of Hong Kong, which is
home to a customs clearance port, Bosch
partner Pro-United Co installed 2,200 public
address speakers of various models, including
outdoor speakers for the travel inspection
building. Experts also adjusted 200 varidirectional
array loudspeakers to balance sound
variations from different building materials.
Bosch also covered the island with more than
2,000 HD cameras including the Flexidome,
Dinion and Autodome series. Monitored from a
security control centre on the Hong Kong-side of
the island, these cameras support 24/7
surveillance of the customs clearance port,
travel inspection building, Immigration
Department and Hong Kong Customs Office.
Assured access control for new
£15m innovation hub
Assa Abloy has partnered with NetNodes to
deliver assured and secure access to a new
innovation centre in London.
Based at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Plexal
is a new £15 million project, acting as a base for
an ‘innovation community’ that brings together
startups, enterprises and academics all under one
roof.
The innovation hub has been fitted with Aperio
wireless, access card-based locking technology,
which is fully integrated with DoorFlow, an online
platform for managing and auditing building
access created by NetNodes. In total, 59 Aperio
Providing policies and
protection for PIM
A review of security risks and requirements by a
Evolution and the introduction of new security
policy and procedure documentation, is helping
Property Initiatives Management (PIM) to meet
its legislative obligations and achieve best
practice at One Central Square in Cardiff.
The introduction of GDPR led to the Building
Manager at One Central Square, John Lambert,
to contact Evolution to discuss the current
regulatory and compliance framework. He
wanted to put in place site security system
policies and procedures that were relevant, upto-date
and most importantly, fully compliant.
Evolution’s holistic approach to security and
process began with a Security Risk Assessment
and CCTV Privacy Impact Assessment on the site.
This was to help PIM understand and create the
necessary policies and procedures to meet its
obligations regarding current legislation
including GDPR, Employment Law and align to
the requirements of the Surveillance Camera
Commissioners Code of Practice.
John says: “Once we agreed what was
required, the Evolution Risk and Design team
spent two days at One Central Square where
they systematically probed the whys and
wherefores of our security systems. In doing so
they were able to provide policies and
procedures that meet our compliance
L100 wireless high-security door locks were
installed across the site. These lock solutions
provide Plexal with physical protection, and
transmit information on door status to DoorFlow
in real time. A further 31 HiD R10 mobile access
locks were also provided where wired solutions
were necessary, such as for the main office
entrances, and for elevators.
The system was installed at the Plexal site
without cabling, and reports suggest it will reduce
the innovation hub’s maintenance costs and
energy consumption going forward.
John Herbert, Facilities Manager at Plexal, said:
“What really appealed to me about Assa Abloy
Access Control’s products was the aesthetics. We
have a futuristic-style open plan design here at
Plexal – our offices are predominantly glassfronted,
so we needed an effective stylistic design
which was not only robust but adaptable too. We
foresee change in the not-too-distant future and
are delighted at our options to modify.”
Stewart Johnson, Director at NetNodes,
explains: “Plexal required an adaptable locking
solution for a range of different doors and, with no
wiring required, it was quick and easy to install
Aperio with minimal disruption.
“Should any additional doors need to be added
to the system in the future, this can be done
easily, without modifying or changing the
aesthetics of the environment. This also
minimises future installation costs, offering a
straight-forward access control upgrade.”
obligations, as
well as providing
transparency and
assistance to our
clients in
meeting their
requirements.
“Following the
initial interview
and assessment
stage, Evolution
created and
implemented all
documentation
and procedures
within two
weeks. The new
systems in place
have made
things simpler,
more
straightforward
and more secure
for us and our
tenants.”
Evolution has worked with PIM since 2016,
when it was selected to maintain their IP CCTV
and access control systems at One Central
Square. PIM has continued to develop the
security profile of the site through the addition
of further CCTV cameras and acess control
doors.
Access and intercom success
for Omagh Hospital Complex
Comelit Group has worked with Building
Protection Systems at the Omagh Hospital &
Primary Care Complex, to achieve its objectives for
access control to interface with intercoms located
at external building entrances, internal Ward
entrances and Department entrances.
Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex
opened in 2017, designed by Todd Architects has
recently won Building of the Year – Public Award
at the Building & Architect of the Year Awards.
The complex presents two wards with 40 single
in-patient rooms and aims to promote patient
privacy and dignity whilst complying with the
latest infection prevention and control standards.
A further 22 recovery beds are available for
patients recuperating from Day Case Surgery.
Working with Building Protection Systems and
the Primary Health Trust, Comelit Group created
a solution to allow access to visitors after
‘normal hours’ when a Department or entrance is
locked-down. The main requirement was for
combined access and intercom system to divert
to a separate location and provide the same
ability to communicate with the caller and
release the door remotely.
Digital noticeboards inform
residents in real-time
Stockport Homes has installed digital
noticeboards at residential tower block
properties managed on behalf of Stockport
Metropolitan Borough Council. The new screens
were installed in communal areas by OpenView
Security Solutions provide realtime
information to improve
communications with residents.
According to Matthew Platt,
Asset Manager at Stockport
Homes: “We asked OpenView
to recommend a digital solution
that would enhance the way
that we communicate with
residents to alert them of
works such as lift maintenance
and other important
information.”
The digital noticeboards,
Clive Kinnear, Senior Manager – F&S Systems
Sales At Building Protection Systems said: “There
were many different elements that had to be
considered carefully when researching how to
effectively manage the hospital security systems.
Not least to provide a welcoming and calming
environment that supports patients, staff and
visitor health and well-being.
“Any security technology must be strategically
placed, unobtrusive and not affect the
aesthetics.”
The overall solution was the integration of an
Intercom to communicate across the Trust’s IT
network. Door entrance panels were connected
and the system programmed to ensure out of
hours calls are automatically transferred. This
covers main entrances to the building and also Car
Parking Barrier Help Stations to assist with car
park barrier issues.
Comelit Group provided over 50 systems across
the whole site, using both its ViP and Simplebus
system technologies. A mix of Vandalcom and Ikall
Entry panels were used, calling Icona Video
monitors. A further range of emergency call
points are located in the car park, all centrally
managed and provided with a concierge unit
facility and off site monitoring, using Comelit’s C-
Bridge to connect to the South Western Area
Hospital in Enniskillen.
manufactured by Intratone, comprise an IP65
rated 15 inch colour screen with options for
surface or flush-fit mountings according to the
requirements of each location. They are
updated using a free and secure cloud-based
website, enabling the information to be updated
remotely in real-time using any internet-enabled
device without requiring site managers to visit
each location individually. The notice boards
use GSM technology so there is no need for any
wireless networks to be installed. This links all
properties managed by Stockport Homes and,
as well as alerting residents about essential
maintenance, can also be used to provide
information such as weather forecasts, events,
meetings and other local news.
Jack Wylie North UK Sales manager for
Intratone, added: “Stockport Homes will now
reap the benefits of this solution by being able
to communicate information with their residents
quickly and easily.”
FIRE SAFETY
What you need to know about installing
fire detection and alarm systems
What do you need to know in order to safely and correctly install a fullyfunctioning
fire detection and alarm system within a building?
There are many aspects at play here: fire safety
legislation, Building Regulations, Health and
Safety (since there’s plenty of opportunity for
accidents when working with tools and up ladders)
and knowing what to do with the old equipment
(there are laws governing disposal of electrical
waste). These are not necessarily the first things
that spring to mind. Having a secure knowledge of
system components, fault-finding and installation
methods are the far more visible and vital parts of
the role, but all of the above help towards
broadening the installer’s knowledge.
Luckily, all of the above can be learned on the
Fire Industry Association’s (FIA) new qualification
pathway. The qualification pathway is currently the
only pathway of courses that will lead to a
nationally recognised qualification set at Level 3 on
the Regulated Qualifications Framework. This
translates as a Level 4 on the European
Qualifications Framework, meaning that those
individuals undertaking the qualification will meet
the level specified in the EN 16763 Services
Standard, which was released last year.
EN 16763 ‘Services for Fire Safety and Security
Systems’ outlines the minimum levels of education
that technicians should have at their disposal.
Although not mandatory by law, the Services
Standard specifies that those working on a system
should be qualified to at least Level 3 on the
European Qualifications Framework.
In a nutshell, EN 16763 lays out a Europe-wide
benchmark of quality that should be expected and
maintained throughout the industry. It sets out all
the prerequisites for the levels of skill, knowledge
and education that should be expected.
EN 16763 is all about hitting quality standards
for fire safety systems, focusing on who’s actually
doing the work and whether they’re doing it
correctly. With life safety systems, it really isn’t
acceptable that, in 2018, people are able to claim
that they can do the job without a certain level of
expertise behind them, but that’s what this
standard aims to define. The message is clear –
education is key. Fire detection and alarm installers
must be educated to at least Level 3 on the
European Qualifications Framework.
“The FIA’s
qualification pathway
is currently the only
pathway of courses
that will lead to a
nationally recognised
qualification set at
Level 3 on the
Regulated
Qualifications
Framework”
6
www.riskxtra.com
Thankfully, those taking the installation
qualification can rest assured in the knowledge
that they’ll be able to both meet and exceed the
standard, providing employers with quality
technicians and the customers of installation
companies with greater confidence in the level of
skill that they’re purchasing.
Qualification structure
There are four units to complete in order to become
qualified, and each has a range of topic areas that
are taught in detail from a syllabus set by the FIA’s
Awarding Organisation (ie the examination body).
(1) Foundation Course
(2) Health and Safety
(3) Environmental
(4) Advanced Installer
Although these courses are numbered 1-4 in
this list, it’s important to note that this is just a
suggested order of study. The learner must study
the Foundation Course first and then the remaining
three units of the qualification can be studied in
any desired order of preference.
After passing all four units, the learner will then
be awarded the FIA Awarding Organisation’s Level
3 in Fire Detection and Alarm Installation, Theory
and Regulatory Requirements.
“In a nutshell, EN 16763 lays out a Europe-wide benchmark of
quality that should be expected and maintained throughout
the industry. It sets out all the prerequisites for the levels of
skill, knowledge and education that should be expected”
(8) System Design (according to the requirements
of BS 5839)
(9) Explosive Environments
(10) False Alarms and Unwanted Fire Signals
Health and Safety
The eight areas of study necessary for this unit are
as follows:
(1) Health and Safety Legislation
(2) Manual Handling
(3) Working at Heights
(4) Lone Workers
(5) Provision and Use of Work Equipment
Foundation course
This unit is the first unit to be studied on the
qualification pathway. The Foundation in Fire
Detection and Alarms is a two-day intensive course
and runs throughout the year at locations across
the UK. Training is delivered by professionals
within the fire industry who have a background of
both training and extensive technical expertise.
Instruction is delivered in class through means of
PowerPoint presentation and a course handbook.
As the name ‘Foundation’ suggests, this course
covers a broad base of knowledge that will prepare
learners to undertake further fire detection and
alarm courses. There are ten areas within the
syllabus and all of these are assessed.
Throughout the course, all of the areas are
covered by the trainer. More extensive notes are
available in the course Handbook, which is given to
learners on the first day of study.
The ten areas of study are as follows:
(1) Legislation
(2) Standards, Codes of Practice, Guidance and
Technical Notes
(3) Working with Third Parties
(4) Documentation
(5) Fire Events
(6) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
(7) Asbestos
(8) Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
(COSHH)
Environmental
This unit also has eight areas of study. These are:
(1) Environmental Law
(2) Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous
Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment
(RoHS)
(3) Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
(WEEE)
(4) Waste Management
(5) Energy Consumption
(6) Ionising Radiation Regulations IRR17
(7) F-Gas
(8) Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) (Halon)
Advanced Installer
This unit is designed to further develop knowledge
and understanding gained in completing the
Foundation Course. While the Foundation
introduces a range of topic areas, this unit focuses
in even further, examining how fire safety law,
Codes of Practice and guidance can be applied to
the role of the systems installer.
You will then develop your knowledge and
understanding into the application of systems
installation, systems testing and fault-finding and,
of course, the documentation necessary for
installation and handover to other key
stakeholders (including commissioning
technicians and end users).
The course has five areas of study (labelled A-E
on the syllabus set by the FIA Awarding
Organisation). These are as follows:
(1) BS 5839/IS 3218
(2) The Construction (Design and Management)
Regulations (CDM) 2015
(3) Building Regulations
(4) Installation Methodology
(5) Documentation
Assessment procedure
Long gone are the days of putting pen to paper
(well, maybe not so long). All assessments on the
qualification pathway are taken digitally on a
tablet at the end of each individual unit.
The assessment for each course is a series of
multiple choice questions designed to challenge
the knowledge and understanding of the learner.
As the learner progresses from the Foundation
Course to the other units, the knowledge gained in
previous units will be built upon and tested.
As with all formal examinations, the usual rules
apply: no talking, texting, conferring or reference
material allowed. However, the advantage here is
that those walking out of the examination can be
proud of the fact that they passed on their own
brain power and knowledge alone (and, later on,
can use that knowledge in the workplace).
Pre-learning materials
For those worried about examinations, fear not.
The FIA has put together a number of pre-learning
materials that are freely available on our website.
A word of advice... Use the pre-learning
materials to study before attending the course and
don’t neglect this. These are an important part of
the course and help learners on the way towards
achieving a pass for the qualification.
Those who do pre-study tend to do a lot better
on the courses than those who don’t, purely
because attending the courses will then draw on
anything you may have learned through self-study
and develop that knowledge even further.
All pre-learning materials are freely available,
whether you’ve booked a course or not, so you can
get started even before you’ve booked. However,
attendance in class is a necessary part of the
qualification, so these two methods of study
should complement each other to realise a more
rounded learning experience.
Other courses
The FIA will be releasing other units in
Maintaining, Designing and Commissioning Fire
Alarm Systems over the coming weeks and months
(at the time of writing one of the units listed is
gearing up for release), so now is the perfect
moment to start on the initial units if you’re
interested in becoming qualified.
The best way in which to remain up-to-date with
the latest developments is to head to the FIA’s
website and sign up for the training newsletter.
FIRE SAFETY
End-to-End Fire Protection
Integrating fire alarm
and voice evacuation
systems into networks
on an IP-level
emerges as a futureproof
strategy with
significant benefits
uk.boschsecurity.com
50
The combination of fire alarm and voice
evacuation systems has emerged as the
status quo over the past few years across a
wide range of sites. Significant safety benefits
arise from combining fire alarms with clear voice
alarm capabilities as studies have demonstrated
that voice alarm with clear instructions
significantly improves fire evacuation times when
compared to mere noise alarms.
Future levels of technology and automation in
buildings and industrial facilities are only going to
rise. Electrical hazards, combustible chemicals and
complex as well as extensive cabling have further
increased the fire loads. Smouldering cable fires
develop slowly and over extended periods of
overheating, subsequently placing high demands
on an addressable system of panels for fire
detection at an early stage. These IP-based
solutions are ideally combined with voice
evacuation to move people out of dangerous areas
as fast and efficiently as possible.
Need for IP network integration
However, the combination of fire alarm and voice
evacuation doesn’t equal integration of these
systems on a network level. In many installations,
fire detection and emergency PA technologies
currently co-exist as separate systems, which can
prove to be somewhat roblematic.
Bosch covers fire detection and evacuation with
a suite of compatible solutions. The company’s
modular Fire Panel 5000 Series includes highquality
panels and peripherals designed for
accurate and early detection and high immunity to
false alarms. A typical network can encompass 20
panels with up to 32,000 detection points. At
Munich Airport, the company has installed 19
panels and 18,000 automatic fire detectors.
On the other side, Bosch’s proven Plena,
Praesideo and PAVIRO voice evacuation systems
deliver clear voice messages, including prerecorded
warnings for emergency situations. In
terms of scalability, the Plena Voice Alarm System
supports small applications with up to six zones
and 254 fire detectors, while PAVIRO supports
medium-sized venues with up to 492 zones and
2,000 detectors. Praesideo secures larger
buildings and complex configurations.
Interfacing these two technologies is simple.
Without the need for additional hardware or
cables, Bosch’s Smart Safety Link creates a standalone
interface between voice evacuation and fire
alarm systems in buildings of all sizes. It requires
no installation of additional General Purpose Inand
Outputs between voice evacuation controllers
to distribute the alarm trigger, in turn bringing
down installation times.
Enhanced functionality and scalability
Aside from ease of installation, Bosch’s Smart
Safety Link achieves new levels of building safety
by creating a single IP-based interface (or multiple
interfaces) between the company’s performanceproven
fire alarm and voice evacuation systems.
Fully customisable to client specifications, the
scalable system supports a new generation of
dynamic evacuation protocols for a fast and
targeted emergency response.
These protocols include phased evacuation or
multi-staged dynamic evacuation targeted to
specific zones in a building (for instance to give
priority to evacuating people in closer vicinity to a
fire). The system provides targeted acoustic and
visual signals to guide people to safety and can be
configured into six-to-500 zones depending on
building size and complexity. This also allows for
evacuating large buildings such as Shopping
Centres, train stations or industrial facilities in
several phases in order to ensure orderly vacation
of the building and prevent panic or delays.
The system is also highly scalable. With only
one fully-expanded panel, complex medium-sized
systems with up to 4,000 detection points can be
created. The networking of several panels lends
itself to wide area coverage at large sites and
between facilities across property lines.
In addition, the combination of Ethernet and
controller area networking allows the greatest level
of flexibility for all kinds of applications, as well as
the connection of even more panels in a single
network structure.
The system can exchange data with
infrastructure solutions such as the Building
Integration System via open IT standards including
OPC. This unlocks a range of possibilities for
integration with other critical infrastructure
systems (such as video surveillance infused with
intelligence and building automation).
Ultimately, investing in the integration of fire
alarm and voice evacuation systems provides
buildings of all types and sizes with end-to-end fire
protection, from early-stage detection through to
an orderly evacuation. It also affords system
operators the peace of mind of knowing that their
systems are future-proof in light of fire safety
legislation as well as technological progress.
Vimpex makes move into manufacturing
Vimpex is a UK-owned business that has
been at the forefront of fire alarm and
evacuation equipment and alarm system
accessory products for nearly 25 years. The
company is proud to be a trusted distributor,
and is now even more prouder to bring its
expertise into the manufacturing of those same
life-saving products.
Thanks to a recent grant funding from bodies
such as South East Business Boost, Southend
Best Growth Hub, Manufacturing Growth
Programme and, most valuably, Essex Rivers LLG
(LEADER), the business has transformed itself
into a specialist electronics manufacturer.
This evolution in direction will now provide
Vimpex with a platform for significant growth
through increased efficiencies, development of
its own products and IP – such as Identifire, Fire-
Cryer and Hydrosense – along with an energetic
push for growth through export. The company is
excited by the opportunities created by this
investment, which will see it develop markets
for Vimpex-produced and distributed products.
This move into a manufacturing model has
allowed Vimpex to create a phenomenal
capacity for business growth. Not only will the
business grow financially though this move, but
it will also create significantly more skilled jobs
for local people. That’s something about which
the company is extremely proud.
Vimpex’s experience in the distribution side
of this industry has established its reputation
worldwide, and it now looks forward to leading
this exciting venture into manufacturing.
are provided including 1st stage alarm, 2nd stage alarm, gas
release imminent and gas release confirmation as well as hold
button activation.
Also on Kentec’s stand at Intersec is the Ockular software
solution, providing building managers with complete control over
fire detection and monitoring. This software enables the creation
of a 2D site map of any site or building to monitor fire safety and
detection, and automatically switches to an area where a fire
device has been activated in order to allow the immediate
viewing and investigation of an event.
Visitors will also see how Vizulinx, a sophisticated yet easy-touse
fire alarm management solution, enables building managers
and service providers to monitor fire systems remotely while also
being able to integrate with other equipment such as BMS. It
passes fire system events via e-mail and in SMS message format
using a standard IP connection. Integration with other systems is
achievable via Modbus or BacNET protocols.
Kevin Swann, managing director of Kentec, stated: “With the
Taktis UL 16L, our panels have the capability to protect the very
largest sites and infrastructures, and already enjoy an enviable
global reputation. Fire-Cryer, Vizulinx and Ockular demonstrate
that the customer is at the centre of everything we do. It’s our job
to ensure that fire safety is made as efficient, practical and
effective as possible for our customers.”
Kentec’s robust and easy-to-install Sigma A-XT, Sigma XT and
Syncro XT+ ranges will be on display at the show, demonstrating
the company’s long-established fire extinguishing capabilities.
CAUGHT ON CAMERA
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the
fight against crime, however once in a while it
captures the public doing something that is
perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a
real one-off moment. Here we look at some
footage that made headlines recently…
Not everyone can walk on water
CCTV footage captured by Annmarie Gardener,
landlady at The Navigation Inn in Wilford Road,
shows the moment a man falls into a canal after
he mistook leaves for a footpath while
distracted by his phone - as if we’re surpised.
This video shows the moment a husband and
wife from Iowa managed to get into a car
accident before they left the house. The
husband reverses down the driveway and
eventually coming to a halt. The wife, then assuming he had
left, reversed into the stationary car. Afterwards The husband
said: "My wife and I were leaving for work, I was waiting for
traffic, and she wasn’t."
Delivery driver makes all drops
These days we’re all doing our shopping online,
which means that delivery drivers are busier
than ever - and under pressure to make all
drops without stacking up the returns. In this
footage captured by Chrissa Wadlow, from Chellaston,
Derbyshire, a Hermes delivery driver obviously found it a bit
tricky to open the gates locked with a bike lock and, getting
no reply from indoors decided to chuck the pair of packages
into her frontyard. One bonus is that every four serving plate
set can now cater for many more.
