one of the later operating systems to configure
the drive. It will also be necessary to ensure that
the latest firmware is installed in the target device
for any manufacturer that supports such high
capacity drives in their recorders.
With a Windows or Linux based system the
drive can be GPT initialised and a simple volume
created that results in an impressive
13,999,884,984,320 bytes of free space though
this reports as 12.7 TB due to the base 2 method
of calculation on Windows machines.
Health Management
In addition to standard SMART (Self-Monitoring,
Analysis and Reporting Technology), the drive
includes a range of software routines to monitor
its performance and operational status. This
monitoring is said to cover over 200 factors
including such things as temperature, error logs
and vibration statistics and to recommend
preventive actions.
The “SkyHawk Health Monitoring” is
currently incorporated into selected NVRs
produced by Hikvision, Dahua, Tiandy and Uniview.
This allows preventive measures and interventions
to be undertaken if anomalies are detected.
Replacement and recovery service
Recovery Service
Seagate have taken a “Prevention – Intervention –
Recovery” approach. With a robust data recording
process, notification of potential for failure and
finally a data recovery service that can provide an
advance replacement drive while the suspect
drive is returned to the manufacturer for analysis
and data recovery.
This replacement and recovery service gives a
potential for charging customers a regular fee to
provide such replacements and to return
recovered data if a suitable support agreement is
in place.
Performance
The drive runs relatively cool with a case
temperature of around 33°C when not enclosed.
The operating range is stated as 5°C to 70°C
though this is “drive reported temperature” not
ambient. The reported temperature matched the
measured case temperature during the tests.
In testing the drive reported a Write rate of just
under 260 MB/s just above its specified 250MB/s
and a Read rate just above 260MB/s. The
maximum Read and Write speeds were achieved
at the outer sections of the drive as expected with
a reduction for the inner tracks due to relative
speed and track length. In all cases the average
for the drive was above 200MB/s. This
performance was compared to a standard 1TB
7200 rpm desktop PC drive that achieved a
maximum 148 MB/s time and a 2TB 5200 rpm
desktop drive that achieved just 62MB/s.
Conclusion
A very fast and efficient hard drive with an
impressive specification, vast storage and
manufacturer support for data recovery if
required. The attention to the specific current and
developing requirements of the surveillance
industry should ensure that this drive provides
the required performance and longevity of
service.
