SECURITY Whilst some statistics claim that a UK home is broken into every 30 seconds, the statistics on housebreaking clearly show that criminals target those homes that appear to have the least protection (from previous page) domestic burglaries between July 2017 and June 2018, with 432,267 of ‘burglary offences’ recorded by the police. Households are currently four times less likely to be a victim of burglary than in 1995. The CSEW Nature of Crime table provides information about the circumstances surrounding incidents of domestic burglary over the last decade, including: • in incidents of domestic burglary in a dwelling where the offender entered the dwelling, the offender gained entry through a door around 70% of the time and through a window around 30% of the time • purses, wallets and money have typically been the most frequently stolen items in domestic burglaries in dwellings, with jewellery and watches, computer equipment and other electronic goods (for example, cameras) also being commonly stolen • around 70% of domestic burglaries in dwellings take place during the week (equivalent to 16% per weekday) and around 30% take place during the weekend (equivalent to 12% per weekend day) • approximately two-fifths of domestic burglaries in dwellings take place during the morning or afternoon (6am to 6pm) and threefifths take place during the evening or night (6pm to 6am) • in over half of incidents of domestic burglary in a dwelling where an offender gained entry into the dwelling, someone was at home at the time • in the majority of years, it was almost equally likely in incidents of domestic burglary in a dwelling that the offender(s) was a stranger or known by the victim The Police advise that homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures however they do recommend that building are not protected solely by alarms, but a suite of measures. The Home Security Action website says that government statistics show that 60% of burglaries on homes fitted with burglar alarms are unsuccessful, which proves that they do act as a useful deterrent. Burglars usually avoid breaking into premises fitted with an intruder alarm and look for easier pickings elsewhere. It is widely considered that the majority of house break-ins are not planned but driven by opportunity - an open window, an empty house - in short, a house that looks easy prey. The statistics, and burglars, agree that the main deterrent is still an intruder alarm. Independent research reveals that 60% of burglars target homes which appear empty and 70% of burglars said they felt that people do not make their homes secure enough. Moreover, 67% said they are put off by homes with an alarm and 37% said they target homes in darkness. The importance of the intruder alarm is clear, so it is essential that the installation should be correct and the maintenance contract addresses all of the problem areas to keep the system running properly. This is especially pertinent when the alarm is listed with a home insurer. One trend that we are all familiar with is the growth of DIY security systems that certainly fulfil a genuine requirement for additional security as outlined by police advice and also appeal to the smartphone–centric generation of new homeowners. Unfortunately these systems, as any of you that have been called out to replace such technology will know, often do not meet the 26 www.psimagazine.co.uk
initial requirement in terms of being fit for purpose. Of course there have been some very successful launches in the market, for example Ring, which began as a video door entry system with remote monitoring that now has evolved into a range of products including cameras and lighting. Such successes have led some professional technology manufacturers to develop their own systems to compete in the same sector which can only serve to improve the overall quality of products on offer, especially in the CCTV market which has seen some very poor DIY systems hit the shelves (and stay on there). The good news for homeowners however is that modern professional intruder alarms from companies such as Texecom, RISCO, Pyronix et al also feature the kinds of tech that work with smart devices and furthermore boast the abilities to add quality peripherals such as cameras, sensors and home automation switches and controls. The panel has almost become the platform for the technology and offers the suite of security measures that can help keep the crime statistics down while also providing remote management of home electronics. Some crimes have become less ‘popular’ over the years such as bank robbery, largely down to the technology that banks have installed and the risk vs reward ratio, others like internet based thefts have risen along with the increase in the popularity of home computers and widespread use of networks for banking and transactions. The domestic residence remains a place where burglars can access high price goods very quickly going in via doors and windows. Yet surprisingly there are still a high number of homes without any visible forms of security to deter criminals and plenty without suitable systems in place to work as required in the event of an incident. There are opportunities in the domestic sector for installers despite the upsurge in DIY launches. By proposing professional level technology to customers based on quality, results, insurance benefits and peace of mind should help them from becoming a statistic in 2019.
