SWLA news Editor’s Note: This series of articles provided by Imperial Calcasieu Regional Planning & Development Commission (IMCAL) will inform, educate and update our readers on events affecting transportation and economic development in Southwest Louisiana. Imperial Calcasieu Regional Planning & Development Commission An Overview of Autonomous (Self-Driving) Cars By Cheri L. Soileau, AICP, Executive/MPO Director One of the types of transportation that hasn’t been discussed here yet is autonomousor driverless- cars. I’m sure many of you have read about them making their debut in larger cities across the US. For example, in Arlington Texas is an autonomous shuttle around the two stadiums, amusement park and shopping in the area. It is to encourage people to ride share and not use their own personal vehicles. You can find these vehicles in Boston, Las Vegas, Pittsburgh, Reno, Austin, to name a few. While these cars haven’t been seen in Lake Charles, that doesn’t mean they won’t be showing up here. There are two types of cars: fully autonomous or partially autonomous. The fully autonomous cars have a variety of different design details. They may have many sensors or laser beams or cameras or sonars or combinations of all of these to navigate the transportation network. The software processes inputs from the sensors that controls accelerators, brakes and steering and even navigation. The software is also designed to know the difference between a bicycle and motorcycle, to follow traffic rules and navigate obstacles and construction areas. Partially-autonomous vehicles have a human driver if the software is not as robust as the fully autonomous vehicle or if there may be large amounts of traffic that constantly changes. Driverless vehicles present a challenge to not only the federal government but to law enforcement and to state and local government. There are certainly benefits to be had with these autonomous vehicles. Safety factors. If we take away the human error, would we reduce the number of auto crashes and, hopefully, reduce fatalities. But, with that comes the concerns about more autonomous vehicles on the roadways, thus increasing congestion and reducing the need for public transportation. Would more people choose an autonomous vehicle that makes a continuous circle in an area rather than a bus? To meet the demand, there would have to be more vehicles, thus causing more traffic issues and delays. Many of these vehicles may be electric, so they would not contribute to any air pollution issues and, in fact, be cleaner than any gasoline engines that are operating. Autonomous vehicles also include larger freight trucks and many companies are looking at partially autonomous vehicles for freight movement as well. The shortage of truck drivers is, most likely, causing the trucking industry to take a hard look at these vehicles. This is just a quick overview of the autonomous vehicles. This topic is one which the Federal, State and local governments are trying to regulate but it’s not easy. A good place to begin is here: https://www.transportation. gov/AV.
