SWLA news Contributed Article Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Event The Southeast Tourism Society (STS) recently honored Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana as a 2019 20 Event for the month of January. From glittering parades and royal costumes to mambo, Zydeco and gumbo, the festivities have something for everyone, with events taking place Jan.5- March 5. The Motor Gras Twelfth Night Car Show will be held Jan. 5, prior to Twelfth Night on Jan. 6 to kick off the season. Other featured events include the City of Sulphur Mardi Gras Parade, Feb. 28; the World Famous Cajun Extravaganza Gumbo Cook-off, March 2; the Children’s Day Parade, March 3; and the Royal Gala on Monday, March 4. Topping off the season is the Krewe of Krewes Parade on Tuesday, March 5. For a full list of Mardi Gras events, log on to www.swlamardigras.com. The Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau is a member of STS, an organization that promotes travel to and within the southeastern part of the United States. The bureau nominates all area fairs, festivals and events quarterly. The STS Top 20 Events marketing program highlights the “best of the best” from submitted entries. Events are selected from each of the following STS member states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The Top 20 Events publication is sent to over 1,600 newspapers, magazines, radio stations, TV stations, AAA publications and others. The combined circulation of organizations using the publication is well into the millions. Therefore, the potential media coverage of these events have made the Top 20 Events list a coveted honor. By Emily Ashworth RN, BSN Two thousand eighteen delivered a few unexpected blows to me and like a boxer in the boxing ring I did not have my guard up. I almost experienced a mental and emotional knockout! But God!! Those experiences gave me physical exhaustion and by the end of the day I did not make time to exercise. Therefore I gained almost 20lbs! Every day I woke up, I felt it. Last month I started exercising again regularly and by December 31st I lost 8 lbs. Now I know what you’re saying, “Here we go again with that same old New Year’s resolution of losing this many or that many pounds!” Well, this woman left that resolution behind many years ago when I tipped the scale at 220lbs and was wearing a size 18-20 in clothes. I learned over 10 years ago that setting a goal to lose so many pounds works for the short-term goal but not the long-term goal. I have always taught my patients and family to be healthy and stay healthy-- you must get moving! The weather, no access to a gym or fitness center, or lack of transportation can be obstacles towards getting fit, but there are options to help get on track and stay on track. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has launched a new campaign titled, Move Your Way. It helps to drive home the importance of incorporating exercise into everyday activities, like mowing the yard, sweeping the floor, or folding clothes. All movement counts! Visit https://health.gov/paguidelines/ moveyourway/ for more information. The website also has an interactive activity planner that you can personalize for you and your family. It is important that adults get 150 minutes of exercise each week and at least two days of weight lifting. If you don’t have weights, can goods, a jug of water or bottles of water will work just fine. That breaks down to 30 minutes a day over 5 days. Children ages 6-17 should receive at least 60 minutes of play time/physical activity per day. Remember regular exercise or physical activity will not only help maintain a healthy weight it also helps to boost your mood, reduce stress and depression symptoms along with reducing diabetes and high blood pressure. Now I know for some 30 minutes a day is a lot and 60 minutes a day for your children may seem like a stretch, but all your physical activity adds up. One of the ways to give yourself more time is to reduce how much screen time you and your children utilize and replace that time with physical activity. If the weather is nasty you can do home exercises, sit-ups, push-ups, leg lifts and so on. My husband and I utilize the home exercises every day for 10- 15 minutes. That helps us to stay on track until we can get outside for cardio or go to the gym. Find your motivation to get moving! My motivation is my family and those in my community, because if I’m not healthy I cannot serve and be with them.
