Students visit alma maters
in fine arts showcase
Select seventh- and eighth-grade students
from Parkway South Middle closed
out 2018 by traveling to their elementary
alma maters – Barretts, Carman Trails and
Hanna Woods – to showcase the fine arts
program. Students from the band, orchestra
and choral programs performed several
songs each to encourage their younger
counterparts to continue musical arts into
middle school.
For Parkway students, Suzuki violin
is a required course in third grade, but
students have the option to study Suzuki
viola, cello and bass beginning in fourth
grade. Choral and band classes are not
offered as part of the curriculum until
sixth grade.
The traveling concert has been a longstanding
Parkway tradition that is a fun and
festive way to bring some holiday cheer,
while also giving students of glimpse of
what these programs offer as they move
into middle and high school.
Rockwood Summit student
advancing biodiesel research
A Rockwood Summit student is developing
a way to extract oil from organic waste.
If she is successful, it could be a significant
development in the biodiesel industry.
Adrianna “Kiki” Wagner is a senior in
Authentic Science Research class, taught
by Darrin Peters.
“I was able to extract oil,” said Wagner.
“The oil was already there, I was just able
to grind it down and extract it.”
The fact that it came from organic waste
is what is significant.
“This has never been done before, here at
Summit,” said Wagner. “Mr. Peters asked
me about researching a project where
they’re trying to convert waste into biodiesel.
He showed me I have much more
potential than I was aware of.”
“This is awesome,” said Peters. “It’s
really cool to be able to have a student
work on something, not knowing what the
results will be, and then be successful.”
Peters said Wagner will enter the St.
Louis Honors Science Fair and hopes to
use that as a platform to get the word
out.
“She will be there to defend her findings
and will be asked questions from people in
the scientific community,” he said.
After graduation from Summit, Wagner
plans to attend Western Kentucky University,
where she will study chemistry.
Holiday card contest recognizes
two Holy Infant students
St. Louis District Dairy Council’s Seventh
Annual Merry Dairy Holiday Card
Contest prompted local students to showcase
not only their love of dairy, but their
artistic talents as well. Two students from
Holy Infant School were chosen as either
grand prize winner or runner-up in their
grade category. Mollie Dunning was the
grand prize winner from the kindergarten
through second-grade category and Rachel
Hesemann was runner-up in the sixththrough
eighth-grade category.
More than 1500 holiday-themed drawings
were considered for the organization’s
holiday card. The grand prize winners were
featured on the 2018 St. Louis District
Dairy Council holiday cards. The winners
received a set of holiday cards to send to
friends and family, along with a premium
gift basket. Runners-up also received a
dairy gift basket, and teachers will be recognized
with a special award to be used for
a classroom party.
Rockwood celebrates Nationally
Certified teachers
In December, a group of 21 Rockwood
teachers earned National Board Certification.
The National Board for Professional
Teaching Standards [NBPTS] improves
teaching and student learning. National
Board Certified Teachers [NBCT] are
highly accomplished educators who meet
high and rigorous standards.
These teachers [in alphabetic order]
are now part of the 154 NBCT in Rockwood:
Like board-certified doctors and accountants,
through intensive study, expert evaluation,
self-assessment and peer review.
NBPTS offers 25 certificates that cover a
variety of subject areas and student development
