Instead, areas of conflict between married partners tend to lessen over the years as their relationships mature, and their conflicts evolve into humor and acceptance. Scientists from UC Berkeley’s Psychophysiology Laboratory analyzed videotaped conversations between husbands and wives who had been married for 15 to 35 years, tracking their emotional interactions periodically for 13 years. They found that as couples aged together, they showed more humor and tenderness towards one another, and less criticism and defensiveness. Their results challenge commonly held theories that older adults’ emotions flatten or deteriorate as they age, and point instead to an emotionally positive future for couples in long marriages, they said. “Our findings shed light on one of the great paradoxes of late life,” said senior author Robert Levenson, a UC Berkeley psychology professor. “Despite experiencing the loss of friends and family, older people in stable marriages are relatively happy and experience low rates of depression and anxiety … Marriage has been good for their mental health.” Participants in the study, who are now mainly in their 70s, 80s and 90s, are California residents whose relationships Levenson and his fellow researchers began tracking in 1989. The latest findings were recently published in the journal Emotion. Exercise alternative? Older adults who are not able to exercise for medical reasons may want to try taking more hot baths to get some of the same health benefits. Sitting in hot water could help to improve inflammation and blood sugar levels in people who can’t be physically active, according to a new study. Exercise stresses the body, leading to the short-term elevation of an inflammatory chemical called IL-6. In response, the body then releases substances to combat those unhealthy levels of inflammation. Previous studies have also found a connection between a spike in body temperature and the production of nitric oxide, which aids blood flow and helps carry glucose throughout the body. British researchers recently studied markers of both inflammation and blood sugar and insulin levels in a group of men who were overweight and sedentary. The participants were divided into two groups, both of which sat in an 80°F room for 15 minutes. Then, the first group of volunteers participated in an immersion bath in 102°F water up to their necks for one hour. The researchers took blood samples before and after these trials, and also measured the mens’ heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature every 15 minutes. The trials were repeated about once every three days for two weeks. After the two-week study period, the men’s fasting blood sugar and insulin levels were down, as were their levels of low-grade inflammation – in other words, the hot-water immersion sessions produced benefits similar to exercise in these sedentary men. Although the researchers acknowledged that the water’s high temperature and long periods of immersion required may make it difficult for many people to commit to this alternative treatment, they concluded that hot-water soaks may improve metabolic health in those who are unable to meet current exercise recommendations.
