Wednesday January 9 2019 News LYTTELTON Museum has unearthed the stories of more than 800 women who served sentences between 1868 and 1913 in what was once New Zealand’s largest prison. The Women of Lyttelton Gaol project aims to shed light on a part of Lyttelton’s history, which has remained largely unnoticed by the wider community. The museum’s website provides the public access to a database and stories of the people who were imprisoned, including the names, ages, place of birth, convictions, eye and hair colour of the women. The project also includes an original sound installation on the goal site in Oxford St that will run over summer and an exhibition at Lyttelton Library. The 9min sound piece is condensed from more than 10 hours of audio, with the stories of the prisoners voiced by more than 30 women with diverse accents to fit their characters. Among the records, Lyttelton Museum found 40 per cent of the women who served were born in Ireland and almost all of their offences were committed outside of Lyttelton. The club’s office was trashed and a safe with an unknown amount of money was stolen in the early hours of December 21. The club, also known as the Top Club, was broken into between 3am and 7.30am, police said. A police spokeswoman said police were called to the club on Dublin St at 8.30am. The stolen safe was attached to the office wall, club manager Trudi Marshall said. She said it was unclear how much money was in the safe. “If it was going to happen it is going to, but around Christmas time it kind of puts a damper on things,” Mrs Marshall said. Police are investigating and collected fingerprints from the office. “Police forensics have attended and are awaiting forensic results,” the spokeswoman said. Mrs Marshall believed the burglars targeted the safe and knew its location. The club continued to operate as normal, she said. The club was upgraded last year, which included a refitted sports bar, repainting and reflooring. We thank you for your continued support.
