Arshaan meets cricket heroes
YOUNG HALSWELL cricketer
Arshaan Askari got up close and
personal with some of his heroes.
Arshaan, 8, got the chance to
meet Black Caps captain Kane
Williamson and Sri Lankan
captain Dinesh Chandimal before
day one of the Boxing Day test
match at Hagley Oval.
Arshaan won an ANZ
competition to become the coin
toss kid for the day’s play.
He has been playing cricket
for two years with the Halswell
Hurricanes.
Arshaan said it was awesome to
meet Williamson and Chandimal.
“I love playing cricket. I play
after school and on the weekend.
It was so cool meeting the captains
and getting to be a part of the coin
toss.”
ANZ head of sponsorship Sue
McGregor said Arshaan was one
of 23 young cricketers selected to
take part in the pre-match ritual
this season.
“We are delighted to bring together
the next generation of cricketers
and their heroes. At ANZ we
believe it’s important to involve
and encourage young cricketers,
which is why we continue to support
grassroots sports,” she said.
“We hope that when they meet
their idols out on the pitch, they
are inspired to continue training
hard and pursuing their dreams.”
But the city council says it has
no plans to install a permanent
link for the two roads.
Mr Keen said McMahon and
Augustine Drives had parking
bays, which meant greater room
to cater for the increased traffic
since the sports facility opened
last year.
Euphrasie Drive was not as
wide, he said.
City council manager capital
delivery Darren Moses said
there is currently a truck access
between McMahon and Augustine
Drives, but it only for
heavy trucks on a “case-by-case
basis.”
“For major events, Nga Puna
Wai will seek one off permission
to use the McMahon entrance to
help spread traffic,” he said.
Mr Keen said the city council
should seal the truck access.
“Why don’t you [council] just
make it easier for people? It just
beggars belief.”
“This is the formed [truck
access] they had to form to build
Mr Keen said planners overlooked
the impact from traffic
travelling from the Aidanfield
Drive overbridge.
“To build everything down the
Halswell Rd end of Augustine
Drive was short-sighted,” he
said.
“Does everybody come from
that side of the city? No. So
guess what? The traffic is going
down Wigram Rd, coming up
the Aidanfield Drive overbridge
right through and they turn on
Euphraise Drive, which is a very
little street.”
Mr Keen presented his concerns
to the Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
last month.
Board chairman Mike Mora
referred it to city council staff for
consideration.
Mr Keen built a house on
four years ago, after losing his
St Albans home in the February
“We’ve been through enough,”
he said.
Beautifully presented by my fastidious vendor this standalone
townhouse is a smart choice for those who want an easy-care property
in a popular location.
With spacious open plan living leading onto an enclosed conservatory
you can entertain in comfort. The added benefit of a downstairs toilet is
always a good plus to any property. With good indoor/outdoor flow from
the conservatory area to an immaculate courtyard and garden. Enough
to potter around in and perhaps grow some vegetables, but easy care
enough that you can also have your weekends free to enjoy the many
amenities the area offers.
Two large double bedrooms upstairs along with a roomy bathroom
complete the package this lovely home has on offer.
A good sized single internal access garage keeps your car tucked away at
night, along with off street parking as well. Secure fencing allows you to
keep children or pets safe while outside.
